The irony being by pointing stuff like that out it pretty much always kills a conversation. Especially when people end up sort of agreeing with each other.

To go off on somewhat of a tangent I think it's partly why the majority of online discourse is often so adversarial. It's not interesting to just go "Yeah actually I agree/This/Indeed/etc" it's almost necessary to have opposing points of view in order to get a decent discussion going and if people do reach a consensus that tends to stop things in their tracks.
Having said that I do think it's possible to have debate without it degenerating into cunt offs, this being one of the rare places online where that occasionally happens.

I think it's a bit different in real life, people don't generally want to be involved in aggresive adversarial conversations(unless they're pissed maybe).

Yeah I'd probably agree, I wasn't making a comment about the quality of conversation really. More that the general tone of most online discourse tends toward polarity. I could well be entirely wrong about that as well though.

Mark Kermode summed it up well, saying burlesque is "stripping with A-levels".

I don't mind burlesque, I quite like the variety of women compared to normal stripping. A lot more alternative girls, and a lot more big lasses, both of which are nice.

Not a fan of the hypocrisy surrounding it though. Sometimes the same person will claim burlesque is empowering women, while stripping is degrading. One involves an unconventionally attractive woman in lacey clothes stripping for an audience of pretentious men and women while music from the early 20th century plays. The other involves a conventionally mediocre woman in shiny clothes stripping for an audience of depressed men while R&B plays. They're pretty much the same thing.

This is potentially /nom/, but I'd count it as more /101/.

It REALLY boils my piss when American recipies give amounts of solids in terms of "cups". A CUP IS A MEASUREMENT OF VOLUME EQUIVALENT TO 240 MILLI-LITRES.

I CAN'T POUR OUT 240ML OF BROCCOLI YOU FUCKS.

Same for pasta. Different pasta has different amounts of air and since it's not regularly packed you can't say that a certain weight of pasta will always have the same density and hence take up the same volume. UGH. JUST GIVE A WEIGHT OR MASS.

As I mentioned in a previous post of mine - anything that is sweet has HFCS in them. It's deplorable seeing as it's a purely politicly lobbyist reason as to why maize derived sweeteners are favoured over anything else.

I was amazed to see that regular honey is viewed as some magical ambrosia to some, where most just get "honey flavoured syrup".

Very much this. Someone discovered that they could produce vast quantities of corn syrup from a relatively small quantity of corn. It's more consistent than cane sugar, and because of the much higher concentration you need less of it, and therefore it's cheaper for manufacturers. As a result of this, the sugar industry hyped it up like nobody's business. These days, demand for corn syrup is almost entirely driven by the US sugar industry to maintain its profitability.

I suppose now is as good a time as any to remind you two that the sugar conspiracy is a rare example of one that isn't mere theory.

Got a text from my girlfriend to pick her up at our local at midnight, which is 10 minutes away by car, so I drove half way and spotted a take away to which I quickly pulled over and got a large donner and some chips thinking that once I get home I will destroy this lovely gift from the turks with a bottle of beer from the pub.

I get there at 5 past and she is chatting with her mates with half a pint left, 15 minuites later this is still going on as she does the charade of getting slowly up only to sit back down.

Now here I sit at 12:35, eating a freezing donner and drinking a bottle of stella.

People who don't know how to tell their friends that they are going home now and goodbye but instead have to stay and nod along every time one of them remembers "something well funny".

I can't speak for the other lad, but I'd expect the same courtesy from anyone I was giving a lift to.

And I'm only going from OP's story, but it sounds like he didn't even send her a "hurry up, love" text, he just sat in his car for half an hour watching her through the window. To me that warrants derision, no matter if he was waiting for his pal, his wife, his mum or his dog. There's accommodating and then there's daft. I chose to mock him because this is /101/ and I like to rant.

Every single time someone suggests you shouldn't tolerate loads bollocks from your missus, the guaranteed response, online at least, is to call them sexist. It's immediately assumed that the poster is quite happy to tolerate the same treatment from a man, and that they're just 'alphas' who think they're above women. All because they suggested a woman was being unreasonable. Most of the time, and certainly in this thread, nobody has ever said the line of thinking was specific to women, but for some reason it's assumed. I'm not fucking waiting for any cunt for half an hour when they presumably told me they'd be ready when I arrived. You can call me a dickhead all you like for that if you want (I'd still disagree though), but not a sexist.

If anyone in this thread had said "you have to show your woman who's boss" you might have a point, but all they've really said is "don't be a doormat". That is in no way gender specific. The "mens rights" bollocks that goes on over the web is pathetic, silly, and wrong, but I can absolutely see why people end up buying into it - responses like this. People try to stand up for themselves in a relationship, or don't think their girlfriend is treating them fairly, and they're immediately labelled an abhorrent woman beater. It's tragic and certainly not helping the progression of equality, as it fosters resent in otherwise well meaning people.

I'm 90% sure this guy is just trying to troll (assuming it's the same poster who has been calling out people for being women beaters for no good reason).

OP, I can't help but feel that maybe a good middle-ground response would have been to go over, introduce yourself if you don't know the friends/say hi if you do and ask if she still wants a lift home right now. That way you're giving her a fair choice between going now or staying out and sorting another lift back.

No matter what fisherpeople say, it disgusts me when women treat their partner with disrespect and psychological control by withholding affection if they don't act like a complete mug. In many cases this can be as damaging as wife-beating, especially when we are talking about control of sizable assets (iykwim wait that wasn't what I meant).

13907 Incompetence
My Missus is a supervisor at CeX.

She comes home everyday from work and tells me a story about how incompetent other stores are. They have an internal system called E-commerce where a store can order items from another store. She is convinced her store is the only one that runs properly.

Everyday they get given wrong items. If I was a manager in one of these stores I would euthanise the staff and start again, that is a massive amount of buy in discrepancies.

Today she text me saying that they'd ordered a Wii U Pro Controller for a customer and the store that got the E-commerce pick sent them a Wii Classic Pro controller.

When technology is your bread and butter, you really shouldn't be making mistakes like that. They aren't even for the same console. I know there is a lad here who works for CeX so I was wondering if you had any similar stories, because I don't even work there and it pisses me off.

If they do start to sell them in The West I don't think it'll be long before they get hacked. You can use the Gamepad as a Universal Controller for you TV and sky box, etc, so I imagine you could probably mod it to work like one of those Smart Pads you use to control your house.

It depends how well it's implemented. Again, using the example of ZombiU, taking your eyes off the screen to look at the gamepad when scanning the environment created a lot of tension. Every time you scanned, you were putting yourself at risk due to taking your eyes off the screen, which I believe was an intentional design choice.

The Wonderful 101 used the second screen relatively well too. Can use the touchscreen to draw the shapes necessary to transform the team (though I prefer using the right stick), but the stand out thing was that when you enter a building, the interior is displayed on the gamepad while the telly still shows the exterior. This was used for a few puzzles and stuff, which was a nice use. Though this was used in Four Swords Adventures for the Gamecube when connecting a GBA, so it's hardly an innovation.

A Four Swords game would work well with the gamepads actually.

>A lot of PC gamers are hoping it gets jailbroken so the modding community can get their claws into it.
The Wii U's security was broken way back (inside of a month after launch I think), there was a presentation at CCC about it. As I recall, they explained that they weren't making public the code used as there was so little homebrew potential for the system, i.e. the hack would only have enabled piracy. If it had just been some random online group I'd have assumed it was bullshit but it was by some of the same folks who broke open the Wii.

>Nintendo would probably come down on them like a ton of bricks, the silly sods. If the modding community got into Wii U controller mods, they'd sell a bucket load of gamepads.
The problem there is that Nintendo probably don't make real money on hardware - historically, most console manufacturers have made their living via licensing revenue from software sales, often making a substantial loss on hardware that is subsidised over the lifetime of the console via a decent attach rate in software. People buying the gamepad and then not buying any games is indistinguishable from piracy, from their perspective.

Text I don't understand but its not uncommon for a chick to show you pics from the family album when the relationship is serious.

My theory: Women have an interest in babies that they assume men share. Showing you baby pictures in this theory is a 'here is what our baby would like like' type scenario.
Evidence to support this theory come from those 'what would our baby look like' picture apps where they marge two photos to make a monster.

Its not as serious as it sounds but is still brown trouser territory if she is on the pill.

I agree, he sounds like a bit of a plonker. I nearly wrote up a lengthy reply, but I've had a smoke and a drink and just couldn't be fucked. I figured at least one other person would call him on it.
I know this isn't the best way to behave but it's a day of rest.

They're not difficult to use.

Anybody who takes more than two minutes to use one has failed at life.

A minute and a half is pushing it.

I've been increasingly directed to take domestic flights as they're sometimes cheaper. I'd quite happily be stuffed into the luggage rack of a Transpennine with a malfunctioning toilet than have to arrive at an airport an hour and a half in advance of a forty minute flight. Utterly soul crushing and you can't even bring your special brew on a plane because of Jihadis.

Call that traction, lad? Pathetic. It's even on the wrong line and sporting a tail lamp.

Well spotted trainlad. You're right but he question is: what's pulling the carriages and why put a dead weight engine on the rear unless shunting rearwards.

Steam engines apparently don't like working a load backwards, especially engines with a tender. Since many places simply don't have the facility to turn them, you will often see trains with a steam engine on one end and a diesel engine on the other. Indeed, when they venture out onto the mainline, these days you will very rarely see a formation like that without the diesel on the back.

Sunday trading laws.

Why? What's the point? Why can't I pop in to the local Waitrose tomorrow and buy some broccoli, or indeed on any Sunday at 9am?

In Germany, peoples eyes. When they wake up on Sunday, they can't, or perhaps won't, open there eyes. Often they spend the entire day in bed, becoming increasingly desensitised, often to the point hallucination.

People who completely fail to reply to any kind of electronic message.

I understand that people are often busy and can't be expected to be at beck and call all day however often I will message people in some way (be it by text, email, or other instant message platform that will definitely be seen) to ask a specific question, inform them of something or start a conversation only to receive not even a one word reply.

I can't quite fathom the mindset behind this. Sending a simple yes/no/ok acknowledgement as a minimum requires negligible time or brain power and for most people is either free or negligible in cost (it's not the early 2000s any more, 'I ran out of credit' is not a valid excuse for anyone in a first world country). Not doing so is just disrespectful and inconsiderate.

To be clear I'm not someone who bombards people with messages all the time about inane shit. Maybe all these people have their own secret reasons for hating me and never wishing to speak to me again but I'd much rather someone say that than suddenly go complete radio silence.

I completely agree that discussion is the best thing, the problem is that if it isn't someone you live/work with and therefore don't see every day it's difficult to do without sending follow up messages or contacting them by other media which would surely relegate you forever to the rank of needy, annoying twatface according to the above poster.

There's always the option (a rough one, I know) of waiting. Just distract yourself for a few days and then shoot a text or whatever back saying (formal:) "I didn't catch a reply to my message about [x] the other day, were you able to respond?" (informal:) "Hey, sorry, do I have the wrong [number/address/etc]?" or the like, if you've just got to know them, or "Sorry, did I catch you at a bad time the other day? Didn't hear back from you."

I guess my main whinge is the way you lads sounded very keen to blame the other party when it's as much your fault as theirs! You'll note that it takes a few tries not to sound demanding in such situations, and that's a hint- if you sound needy, you're probably being needy, mate.

I've had this happen a few times in life.

I used to be quite close friends with this guy from secondary school and he used to live on my street. I went out on a night out with him once after not seeing him for a long time. I remember texting him the day he was moving out. Never responded. I also sent him some facebook messages afterwords, never responded to those either. So I deleted his number and him off facebook.

I used to go to this sports club twice a week. Became really good friends with the coach and his brother. I even invited the brother round to my house once and we had a good time. Anyway, I move away to uni and I get this text from him, asking me if I'm coming back to the club. I say "I'm not in hometown right now, plus I've got fresher's flu so I can't play." Texted him few times afterwards for a catchup never responded. Asked him if he wanted to play badminton sometime, never responded. So I ended up sending him facebook messages after about 3 months, he'd "see" the messages but not respond. So like a month later I send him a message asking him if there was something I did wrong and why he wasn't replying. Guess what, never responded. So I deleted him off facebook and I deleted his number. 'Tis a shame.

This other friend he's told me straight up he doesn't like the humdrum of texting so that's why he doesn't reply. That's fair enough I can respect his honesty. Though he replies when I need him too, plus an insult usually gets a reply.

How bizarre.

>So like a month later I send him a message asking him if there was something I did wrong and why he wasn't replying

Yeah I guess that's a large part of why it makes me feel uneasy, like you've done something terrible to offend them completely without realising. I had a good mate who took offence to me applying for a job at the same place as him and rather than calling me a cunt or whatever just stopped ever replying to texts or calls. This is someone I'd known for years and one of the main people I went drinking with in my hometown. At the time I assumed I'd done something else to offend him badly but recently it's become apparent it was that petty.
