My survival skills have gotten quite rusty, so I'd rather have a relatively nearby lifeline for if my compass/map combo goes awry.

>>2900

I'm quite fit, I generally jog a couple of miles every few days and that doesn't quite kill me, and I'm no stranger to walking long distances. I reside on the Suffolk/Essex border, and am not really aware of any particular spots around here. I also have £20 to my name until my loan comes in, although I expect another £30 to grace my account within a week, but I'm intending to do this during Easter next year, so I should still have a bundle of money by then, and I'll also be in Newcastle at that point, so a bit closer to places where a cheap getaway would be viable.

>>2901

I love the boil in a bag rations, lovely stuff. I have a pretty hefty rucksack, and I'm not fussy about being entirely clean, so past the tent and sleeping bag, I'd probably have a lot of room for food, so that's sounding pretty appealing...if I was going to do that kind of thing though, it'd probably be with other people though, I don't particularly enjoy walking journies on my own.

I'm starting to think I may have implied stuff I didn't mean in my first post. I'm not looking for a wilderness adventure in this case, more some kind of stable location where I can just not be hustled and bustled or have the internet at my fingertips. Retaining an mp3 player and a phone to contact people is pretty necessary, as they don't provide me with distraction from what I'd be aiming to do. Somewhere devoid of a lot of distractions, basically. I mean, I probably could do it just in my room if I really tried, but with 5 other guys in the same house and all of them mild weed smokers and drinkers, I doubt I'd be able to stop myself from joining the frivolities. Thanks for the advice so far though chaps, it's inspired me to do the whole wilderness thing at some point to scrape away the rust on my outdoor skills.

Plan out how much you're going to eat and take that.

I'd suggest a shitload Army rations, the ones in pouches that you boil to cook, and a fair bit of rice. That should last you, as long as you don't mind lugging it up.

You can hunt for any meat you might want, but all you really should need other than your rations is water purification tablets/filters, a tent, a sleeping bag and a way to start fires. Lighters are alright, but you'd be better off learning how to mak one with flint and steel before heading off.

Just head off to the lake district with a tent and head up a mountain for a fortnight. You'll like it, as long as you prepare properly. Even if you don't prepare, it has the potential to be fun, but it sounds to me that you'r accustomed to comfort and my suggestion seems to be a nice middle-ground.

No point in going to a youth hostel to detox, you'll just end up finding som shady guy to buy summat off.

tbh, it's probably better to go with one other person. You can carry a shitload more than just you could, and you won't go completely insane with boredom and think about heading into town to 'get a little something to help me cope'.

Some mountain refuges have solar and wind gennies but they might be out of reach for you for now.

If you fancy a cheap trip out with plenty of variety I'd suggest Snowdonia. There's ample opportunity for camping and the paths around the rhinogs are often deserted (except for thundering packs of wild mountain goats). You can do lots of walks and the odd scramble (like up Tryfan). I'm off back there soon to swim in the llyns and go up flying buttress again.

If you do go, tell us and I'll point you at some things.

Well if you really want to 'spend time away from stuff', I'd suggest you leave your gadgets at home. If you really can't do that, how about wind-up/solar chargers?

Camping is great. Even on a campsite. You don't sound altogether ready for wild camping, and, yes, B&B's are expensive and not really 'away' from anything very much. Just find a nice campsite in a rural area and go *find yourself*. Sure, the Lakes are beautiful, but so are very many other places. Find a forest, a national park, some moorland - whatever you have nearby - and there will be campsites. If you're feeling adventurous, find two and plot a trek from one to the other.

Youth hostels are a good compromise, but again, not exactly 'away': particularly at this time of year, you're going to end up with company.

Get out there, OP, in whatever way you're comfortable with. You will need some willpower, but the first step is the hardest.

[/A/src/128018412981.jpg]

I'm looking to spend a certain time away from stuff, at least a fortnight and up to a month, only I'm not sure what I really need to do, or what to do. Potentially detox, because I rarely give my body more than a couple of days rest from the regular substances, but also a time of 'self improvement'. I have little willpower when it comes to distractions, because I generally only do what needs to be done, and that leads to a lack of anything interesting getting done...but enough /emo/
I'm stuck between just taking a tent and going walking in the Lake District, but that would be a bit too far for me in terms of survival and supplies. What would be ideal is somewhere which had a powerpoint (for recharging mp3player/phone) and also a store selling the basics of food. I think a BnB would have that and be in an appopriate location, but it'd be a fucking BnB and I'm not made of money. With enough books I wouldn't need any company, those are the only real specifics I'm looking for. I think it'd be pretty beneficial for me and allow me to also enjoy/appreciate stuff I do far too often.
So /A/, you roaming lovelies, what would you advise for my extended retreat?
