I automatically think it about all these 70s stars now. Cheers Jimmy.

The only scandal I can actually recall about Ken Dodd was some tax dodging, a long time ago.

Yeah, probably a carpet-bagger. Also I can't stand ubiqutous praise for the dead, he can't have been that fucking funny.

They sometimes do turn out to be wronguns if they are that secretive about their sexuality. But not always.

In days of old, when gays were considered wronguns as well, you also had many closet homosexual celebrities keeping quiet about their personal lives. There was a whole circle of famous homosexual Hollywood film stars during Hollywood's golden age who were trying to keep up false appearances. Rock Hudson was one of them, for example.

This still kind of happened until recently though; Ricky Martin used to be famously tight lipped about his sex life before he came out, even telling reporters things like "I will never tell the press details about my women". Well, in a manner of speaking, he still never does. Because there aren't any.

And no, I'm not tying to equate kiddie fiddlers with gays. My point is just that when somebody in the limelight is that secretive about their sex life, usually their sexuality is one that society at large doesn't approve of. Or that they themselves might see as a possible hindrance to their success.

I don't think Ken Dodd was a paedo, or that at some point it might even come to light that he was on a similar level as Jimmy Savile. But it's not unlikely that he was closet gay and, being from a different generation, was afraid to come clean about it.

He was certainly an odd person as comedians generally are and had peculiarities around his finances but he was sexually mainstream and had the same girlfriend for many many years. He was from a generation long before the oversharing of social media and celebrity culture who valued privacy above that sort of publicity.

He was very funny indeed although you really had to see him live to appreciate that, it never worked on TV.

I wouldn't say that it didn't work on TV, his quick-fire stuff was pretty good, but yeah, give him a stage and 2-3 hours and he would crank it up to 11.

Kind of a depressing day for the dad of one of my mates. He is paralysed from the chest down due to a work accident (he was a roofer and fell down 25 feet from a scaffold onto the ground with his back first. He's lucky to be alive at all). Anyway, he always said that Stephen Hawking was his big idol, because he had it even worse than him and still had a successful life.

Nothing like exploiting someone's death to try and further your agenda.

A young Stephen Hawking would never have made it in today’s age of austerity
