I do love a lot of the NWOBHM, I'd say it's essential listening for any metalfag.

Also I really should get round to doing another set on Radiofa.gs

I dislike metal as much as the next sane person, but really, is there any need to make this thread, just like all the others about metal, descend into raging about metal's inherent shitness? The hide button is there for a reason. All I ask is that the metalfags confine all their failure to one thread, so I may safely ignore them at my leisure.

I used to be heavily into it. Still have a lot of old albums as well. NWOBHM's Tank, Diamond Head, Warfare (highly recommend their tune Dance of the Dead). Some old Thrash, early Black. Some new school along the lines of Slough Feg, Hibria, The Sword*.

Slowly, I lost interest, due to the overproduced sound of the newer bands. You can only listen to the same albums so many times.

At the moment my favourite type of metal is the 'post-black ambient/atmospheric' variety; and this style is best exemplified by Wolves in the Throne Room.

The best British version of this style comes from Fen and Wodensthrone, both of these bands released astonishing albums last year that easily made my top 10 of the decade.

I feel the age of metal is over, due to the shitness of emo music, ruining metals image, So that people see emo music (screaming about your feelings in a high pitch voice) with heavy metal, (shouting/singing about hurting people in a low voice) and think that they are the same.

Yeah. I kind of feel the same, but not for all the same reasons. There're too many genres, too many imitators, and it's too orderly.

The moment that Metallistic styles became categorised, it died. Back in the mid/early eighties, it was Metal (or soft metal like Ratt and Crue) and that was it. Hell, even Crue were considered pretty Metal.

Now, the production is too clear, the themes are tired, and I haven't heard one classic album with variably-tempo'd songs since the late nineties.

Bands need play something that isn't a mindless shred-fest. I don't wanna hear bland shredding and monotonous growling about the Devil or mucus anymore. I don't want boyband voices and singing about unicorns and solar systems; I want neck-breaking riffs with raw or operatic vocals singing about . . . whatever every other Metal band isn't already talking about.

After all, every band which pushed Metal forward essentially said "fuck you" to everything that was already out. And that's not happening anymore.

>>3794 I could'nt agree with you more. Even the old metal bands, such as maiden and sabbath say that metal is now be comming to corporate and boring. A new type of metal is needed, one that breaks the mold once more, and the bands that are truely satan orientated, can't accknowledge that the satan references in older bands where just to match the dark and heavy music, that was unheard of back in those days, and it wasn't suposed to be taken to heart.

They're not British, but Mercyful Fate are so goddamn good I like to think of them as NWOBHM anyway. Over the last week I've been completely binging on them for some reason.

It's a shame, but most people seem to get tied up with King Diamond's solo work instead; which is great, don't get me wrong, but he never wrote anything else quite like Nuns Have No Fun or Satan's Fall. Mercyful Fate's first three releases (the EP, Melissa and DBTO) are some of the finest heavy metal in existence.

There's a bit towards the end of this song that just makes me jizz every time I hear it. It's a small part that most people would probably dismiss, but it's subtleties like that that really MAKE music for me. Listen out between roughly 4:00 - 4:10 and see what I mean.

Are you familiar with progressive rock (King Crimson, Genesis etc.)? It's pretty much the same but considerably heavier. Probably with thrash metal elements along with complex jazz-like sections. Space rock touch is also allowed. You should listen to Rush, Queensryche and Dream Theater to get the idea.

More recently there are a lot of bands on Williowtip records pushing absolutely mind boggling tech prog, like Gorod, Neuraxis and Sickening Horror, theres also a couple of weird things on Willowtip like Crotchduster which seem to exist just as a joke side project or something...

Ehhh.... I'm undecided overall. It really has it's moments but it hasn't got me excited the same way I was the first time I heard The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg, for example. The vocals are really quite poor, which is a surprise from Dickinson, although I suppose he' getting on a bit.

The production bugs me a little bit, too; from a band as established a Maiden I don't expect the music to sound as though it was recorded in a garage. I'm by no means a production whore, although admittedly I am rather an audiophile; it's just that I really hate a half-arsed recording that lacks atmosphere.

With luck it isn't a final mix, but luck isn't something I trust. It might just take a few listens before I start to feel it, perhaps.

There was a full on thrash revival over the period of 2007-2009. It's dropped off a bit now, and most of the major leading bands (Evile, Warbringer, etc) have abandoned ship and are now busy pretending to be the new Death, resolutely keeping silent about their involvement.

However, this is not a bad thing. A vast majority of these revivalist bands were utter, utter shite. Derivative and unoriginal dross. See: Merciless Death, Fuelled By Fire, Bonded By Blood, and a whole host of shitty L.A. bands. The good bands to come out of it are few and far between, but of very high calibre. Mutant, Skeletonwitch, Vektor, Municipal Waste, Gama Bomb, and Hospital Of Death are a few that come to mind.

Oh, and Vindicator (UK). *NOT A SHAMELESS SELF PLUG*

I can't say I'm too impressed with a lot of the thrash revival bands, apart from Gama Bomb. I think a big part of this is that I'm old enough to remember the glut of generic sounding cut and paste thrash bands that were about during the late 80's early 90's. A lot of the recent bands do seem a bit too tongue in cheek with lots of knowing references to other bands/songs, or they go the other way and try to hard to be "true thrash" and don't really add any other influences to their sound.

One for the ladies. You know who I'm talking about; the ones who like Metal, but can't handle the death and violence-obsessed subject matter, and who quake at the sound of double bass and manly vocals.

Hair Metal, but modern and not bad:

Also, it'd be interesting to know what you two Thrashilites think of Holy Grail. I've been pointed in their direction, but haven't heard more than one tune. Vocalist is former High Speed GTO-era White Wizzard (not the same one as in the WW vids I posted).

This is my friends thrash band, they've played with Gama Bomb, Cannabis Corpse (Municipal wastes bass players OTHER band) and lots of other quite big bands. Check it out.
