1112 The Walking Dead
Given the prevalence of zombie threads on /b/ i'm guessing a lot of you would be into this if you are not already. The basic premise is that instead of only covering the beginning of a zombie outbreak, the writer Robert Kirkman plans on following this group of characters as they spend months and years surviving (or not) in a zombie infested world. Just from reading the first few issues It's difficult to get an idea of how brilliantly the story develops later on, but you've got to begin at the beginning.
Anyone else read it?

I really need to get myself up to date on this. I got to issue 33, but then missed a few due to stocking problems and never got back to it. It is a very good book, though it does fall foul of the "Man is the real monster" trap a few times.

I didnt mind all the different ways that the story explores the "man is a monster" theme. It does dwell on it a lot, but I think it's interesting and plausable and the debasement of each character is done in a different way so it doesnt seem repetitive. But I really did wince that one time when the main character gave a long speech spelling out what we had been seeing over the course of the whole story. It's the speech that ends "WE ARE THE WALKING DEAD" like some bizarre political rally.

There's loads of exciting stuff that happens after #33 - you can probably imagine. I've read all the issues so far (58) and the plot still seems to be developing in interesting ways.

That sounds like issue 33 as well. It's the issue that ends with Michonne discovering the others sleeping in the wrecked helicopter.

If you just copy and save those those URLs in a plain text file you can use something like Slimrat to automatically download them from RS for you. It's for linux, but I'm sure there are similar programs for Windows and Mac users.

Thanks for all these, I'll go through my paper copies again before going through the digital ones. I believe there was some distribution problems with issue 33, which was why I stopped there. I just don't like buying trades of stuff I already have the issues of.

CDISPLAY is probably the most popular. google it and google the .cbr format and learn that you do not need anything to view .cbrs .A comic viewing programme just makes it more convenient. I'm sure you are a sweet and lovely person, but really. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=What+program+do+you+need+to+open+.cbr+files%3F

THANK YOU so much for pointing me in the direction of CDisplay. Not only can I read those last few Walking Dead, I can also read the 12 issue DC comics run of 'The Shadow' that Imy dad's mate loaded onto my laptop's hard drive when he set it all up for me.

And I did look up .cbr when I first got my laptop, wanting to read The Shadow, and what I read told me that windows as standard should be able to open .cbr files. But my laptop wouldn't, and my desktop won't either.

.cbr and .cbz are just rar and zip archives with their file extensions renamed. You could just extract them with your archiver and look at the images with whatever default image viewer your computer uses. You may have to rename the file extension so the archiver can open it though.

Also, I doubt you're using linux, but anyone who is should try Comix if they haven't already. It's the best.

If you have a PSP, then you can load up a CBR reader for that as well. The only downside is it is a bit on the slow side, but good for reading comics on the go.

The Walking Dead continues to rumble on, up to issue 63 now. I've just spotted that there was an interview with Charlie Adlard (the artist since issue 7) a couple of weeks ago in the Guardian: http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/books/article6617758.ece

I must say I raged at that, but it is good to see things like The Walking Dead getting mainstream coverage.

I stuck with The Walking Dead up til about issue 43 but got bored as it didn't seem to be going anywhere and waiting to find out what happened to make all the zombies got boring. Should I carry on where I left off?

Ah yes, 43 is the one where the mob from the other settlement invade the prison. That was the peak of the series so far for me. And the following few issues dealing with the aftermath of this confrontation were good too. Since then the #55-#60 story arc "What We Become" worked pretty well, and it's only in the most recent #61-#66 story arc "Fear the Hunters" that I feel the comic has kinda lost momentum. Stretching out an unimaginative scenario with nothing at stake character-wise, and the dialogue has got more platitudinous, if that's possible. Having said that, i'm hopeful that the comic will get better when the group move on from their current predicament.

#43 was a strange place to stop though wasn't it? THE INTEGRITY OF THE GROUP HUNG IN THE BALANCE, SEVERAL BIG CHARACTERS WOULDN'T MAKE IT OUT ALIVE, THINGS WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN

I quite liked the Hunters bit. I mean, it wasn't very imaginative, but it was fairly badass.
