Cheers for tracking these down. I hadn't seen half of them, though i can't seem to get enough. Drunken Bakers is like some kind of dysfunctional Greek tragedy on straight Pernod, >>2445 was especially gutting/hilarious.
I only hope they keep it going in some kind of every worsening narrative, with the little glimpses into their pasts and where it all went wrong.
There's something going on with that old lady..

I love it. It's strange that Viz can also be so clever and compelling, and yet I'd never ever buy the damn thing.

I'm not that guy, but I would hesitate to buy Viz despite loving Drunken Bakers and the other Farmer & Healey strips i've seen in the magazine. I even like a lot of the letter pages and the spoof magazine articles. Ok so I probably am likely to buy Viz if I see it. But I can't get into the farty Beano aesthetic of 90% of the comic strips. Maybe i'm just not enough of a cheeky chappie.

I think that's what's holding it back, the fact they're still hanging onto this aesthetic that's about twenty five years out of date.

>>2726 That's what I love about it. However, I grew up on the Beano so find it hilarious to lampoon and rip into the "wholesome" family strips about bullying or animal abuse. I can see why people who have never read the Beano wouldn't find it funny without the right frame of reference.

Oh definitely, I'm not saying there's not a place for that, but given their falling sales, a little diversification wouldn't be a bad thing.

I'm sure there's a place for an adult-themed comedy comic, but it's gone a little stale lately.

>>2728 "It's not as funny as it used to be" was a Viz (I hate to use the word but it fits) meme some years ago. It seems to go through booms and busts in comedic value. Right now, I'd say it's heading out of a bust. The only thing that annoys me is the price.

That's the age the writers grew up in - same as mine. When we were lads, it was all Beano and suchlike.

If Viz were going to adopt a modern twist it would have to be all anime-derived or something similar. I can't see them doing that.

I grew up on the beano. When I matured to the point it was no longer worth reading, Viz was just as boring. It's the same mindless, boring "humour" but with more swearing.

I used to read Viz all the time, recently I picked up a copy again and had a quick flick through.

Now... I thought I'd only stopped reading Viz for a short time, it's only just now that I've realised I had given up reading Viz for about seven fucking years, and when I started reading it again it was exactly the same, nothing had changed.
