So I started working out recently, and I have a question re. sets/reps when bench pressing. I can usually either do 3 sets of 8/4/2 reps or 3 sets of 5/5/5 reps. Which of these is better for simply getting stronger? Is it advisable to do less reps in the first set so you can do more reps in the last sets?

Lad. The fact you posted a 4chan /fit/ meme while posing a question so utterly banal as to be beyond discussion, even on that particularly fetid sink-hole, means that this simply has to be a thread-deletion worthy troll attempt.

If you're actually serious just visit bodybuilding.com, t-nation, leangains, even fucking /fit/ and search for a beginner routine. Then stick to it for a while. To answer your question (although lord alone knows why) either 3 sets of 8 or 5 sets of 5 is preferable to either scheme you proposed. Modify your weight until you can do one of those. 5x5 is better for pure strength than 8x3, although the best program out there for incremental strength gains is Jim Wendler's 5/3/1. Now bugger off.

I've been waiting patiently for this.
