9405 Portable, inexpensive laptop.
Greetings.

As I am going to be living in the colonies for 8 or 9 months starting in late August I figured I would get myself a laptop. A standard 15.6 incher seems a bit heavy and big to lug around on flights and in my bag constantly when I actually get there, so I have been looking at smaller, lighter laptops (e.g. 11 - 14 inch screen size)

As I am a tad short of funds, I have a budget of around £400/410, and have already come up with a sort of short list.

They are:
Dell 11z (£379 with dual core, 11 inch screen)
Dell m301z (also £379, only single core, but ATI gfx, 13inch screen)
Acer Ferrari One (£399, dual core AMD, ATI gfx, bright red and tacky, but seemingly powerful, 11 inch screen)

I'm leaning towards the m301z as it is pretty good looking, has decent battery life, and a decent graphics card, although the amd inside it is an unknown to me.

So, fellow Britfa.gs, what should I purchase? Any other recommendations besides these??

What do you need it for?
I have a netbook, it suits my mobile needs just fine.

I read this yesterday and I too thought about a netbook. You could go for an older model and get it dirt cheap - perhaps an Eee 901 - or you could go for something new with Ion graphics. Either way it will be well below your budget.

If you only need it for web browsing then >>9409 is spot on. You could pay £70-100 for a decent enough laptop. Sometimes these older laptops can have better specs than a newer and more expensive one.

It's the desire for laptops to do high end gaming that usually makes the budget skyrocket. Without such high demands you should find you've plenty cash to spare.

Thanks for the replies. It would mainly be for web browsing/music listening, but I do dabble in audio editing and music creation, mainly with Ableton Live, which is why I have steered clear of Atom powered netbooks.
