I'm off to London on Friday for the night and most of Saturday with the missus.

Other than the general tourist stuff, what are the best things to do and see? We'll most likely be going for dinner and out to a bar somewhere Friday night, any suggestions of which parts of London to look into for this? I'm not made of money but not being cheap at the same time. Any nice places I can take her on the Saturday?

I've only ever used the tube system in London, never actually been outside. So tube-wise i'm fine, actually knowing what places are good I have no clue

The London subreddit gets asked these questions all the time and has a wiki for that purpose: http://www.reddit.com/r/london/wiki/index which is quite handy.

My personal favourite evening places are:

Dovetail http://dovepubs.com/aboutdovetail/ if you like an interesting choice of beers (mostly Belgian). They do very nice food as well, but tend to get a bit too packed for that on Saturdays. Nearest tube station is probably Old Street.

Two Floors http://www.twofloors.com/ which do decent beer (Camden Brewery) and are tucked away enough to keep the usual tourist crowd at bay. Nearest tube station is Oxford Circus.

The Crown and Shuttle http://crownandshuttle.co.uk/ . Again, decent beer and a nice fully roofed and heated garden in the back. It tends to have bouncers at the door but they are for show and won't turn you away unless you look completely smashed. Never tried the food there. Nearest tube is once again Old Street.

Lingo http://lingocuisine.com/ , a Japanese restaurant with good food at reasonable prices. Don't trust the website quotes. The sushi is good to great, though they don't always have the more exotic stuff (e.g. otoro, urchin) in stock, but the staff will let you know as you order. They don't open late.

Maison Bertaux http://www.maisonbertaux.com/maisonbertaux.com/Maison_Bertaux.html do cakes, particularly cheese cakes. It's a bit artsy, especially the upstairs in the main place and downstairs in the next door but that only matters if you're there during the day. It's a bit of a fixture. Again, doesn't open late.

If you have a bit of a sweet tooth, then La Gelateria http://www.lagelatiera.co.uk/lagelatiera_contact_us.html does phenomenal ice cream, including some rather unusual concoctions (they had basil & chilli in the past which was really rather nice). Not sure which station is closest (I usually end up there after food) but Leicester Square probably isn't far off.

This is a great post, I'm not the OP but that looks like all the types of places I'd be interested in visiting. I usually rely on friends to guide me around London, or wander around Brick Lane or Shoreditch on my own until I find something I want to eat. Thanks for taking the time to type all that out, I'll use it as a starting point for when I'm next in the capital.

I think you might have been dreaming. As far as I'm aware there're no abandoned Brunel dorms. It might have been something on the RAF base (I can ask my dad, he was there in the late 70s/early 80s); but that's all demolished now.

Going to do my last year of uni in one of these places, not sure of the pros and cons of living in either of them. I'm a northerner, I've spent 2 years living in the midlands but never down south. What do you lads reckon?

Manchester, easy. It's a bit rough around the edges, but it's a genuinely cosmopolitan city with a rich cultural life. Southampton is the kind of city that people escape from, Manchester is the kind of city that people escape to.

From personal experience Southampton seems like a decent place, good town centre with plenty of pubs etc. The campus is one of the better I've seen for a campus uni but it does seem to be strangely far from the student halls (maybe not an issue if you're getting your own place though).

From other people I know, I've heard mixed things. One guy going to the city college loves the place, but he's off his face on K and mandy most the time so he'd probably have an equally good time gurning in and abandoned barn in Yorkshire so maybe take that with a pinch of salt or whatever else is your poison.

Another guy who graduated a few years back seemed to have had enough of the place, in particular he said that it felt very generic and lacked the individual character of cities like Liverpool, Norwich etc.

Don't know so much about Manny, from what I've heard it's a great student city but as with any large city there are some seriously dodgy areas.

If you're a student in Manchester you generally don't even have to go near the dodgy areas. Fallowfield is a bit shitty but it's not that dodgy and it's mainly students so there's no real issue.

Yeah it's a bit bland. For some reason, my three favourite things about Southampton are that you can get there from Waterloo and it's not far from Portsmouth, whose high street I prefer. The third is that it's next to the New Forest.

Sadly I think you're right, and I'm well aware of how the electronic side of things is thriving. But that's the totally opposite side of the coin to what I was brought up with, to the bands I've played in, to who I am. It's a shame really, there's nothing to stop me showing up and enjoying that sort of performance, but I always just feel out of place, it isn't "my scene", as you might say.

As my own band finds itself playing to more and more half empty rooms as time goes on, I am starting to worry that we might be finally entering the age where those strutting, flamboyant rockstars wielding their axe whilst casually smoking a cigarette, or wailing into a microphone bare chested and dripping with sweat, are nothing more than a memory.

It frightens me because I might have to end up becoming one of those "grown ups" where you can tell they used to be a greasy long haired punk back in the days, but decided to pack it all in to wear sensible clothes and settle down with a family. I don't know how to reconcile that with my world view.

>You don't get the feel of living in a global city like you do in Leeds, Manchester etc

Thank fuck for that. Since moving to Manchester I've just felt my everyday life turn to a fairly narrow spectrum of shades of grey. McDonald's and Pret everywhere, choice few independently-run places to sit and have a bite to eat and the ones that do exist are so up themselves about being independently-run that they charge twice as much.

I hate it here. Manchester has definitely pissed on my cornflakes.

Same feeling about central Leeds really. After living in Sheffield for 5 years, I really hate moving here. It's so much snazzier and well kept - all polished white stones and chrome. But it's pretty interchangeable with every big-ish city centre in the country, whereas Sheffield just isn't.

Also no Cooplands.

>no Cooplands.

Yes there is. Just off Vicar Lane. There's plenty outside the centre too.

Get yer facts reyt before you start beefing m8.

Biggest difference with Leeds compared to other cities is that it's very evident how the place is a conurbation, not just a big single mass. The shiny posh tower blocks and fancy shops in the city centre are only there for southerners and rich student kids, unless you live in the centre of Leeds then you should have practically no need to go there. All the suburbs still have their own mini-centre, based around the old main street or whatever it was back before the urban sprawl engulfed it.

The middle ground ones do exist, trust me. The quintessential norn iron bird is one who's up for a bit of anything but also has their head screwed on - they'll suggest you take them up the arse on the first date but they'll also fit in with your mates down the pub.

And no matter what side of the fence they lean on politics wise I find it translates into them really enjoying an english knob, either for the taboo or the patriotism respectively.

My ladm8s and I, guys and gals, are heading to Bohemia this summer, I have two questions one of which is probably more answerable than the other.

Firstly, can any of you lot recommend anything to do in Prague, other than drink and party on the cheap? I've thought going shooting would be a good idea, something you can do there but not here.

Second question, should I lose my v to some prozzy whilst out there.

First question is the priority.
