What's the most obscure food you've had recently /nom? I had a whole bunch of lychees the other day... i'm not sure i like them; yet i'm sure i'll have some more. Strange.

Lychees are lovely. I've never had them as depicted in the photo, I only manage to find them in tins. Still, lovely fruit. You can often find them at Thai or Chinese all-u-can-eat places, in the desert section.

Pic is of a Dragon Fruit, another wierd and wonderful fruit from Asia/South America I believe. The taste is somewhat disappointing given the fruits exterior, but it's nice nonetheless. Like a kiwi, but a bit different.

the soft flesh of dragonfruit has a subtle sweetness which makes a quite nice sorbet.

Haven't had anything particularly obscure recently, though I did have a massive craving for chitterlings the other day which used t be a childhood favourite of mine. Haven't had tripe & onions for ages either.

(If I was that way inclined I could say this is an offal state of affairs, but I won't)

I love fruit, but lychees are just weird as hell. Like you, I can't work out if I like them or not. I'm not sure I do.

I have a thing for picking up weird-looking fruit. Ugli fruit, star fruit, etc. I love a good persimmon fruit too. Delicious.

I recently had some buffalo steak. Jebus, it's pretty damn good. Like beef, but beefier. If that's even possible.

cook some mushrooms and onions and when they're nearly done add a little yeast extract and mix it in. top the buffalo with that.
even more beefier

Lychees are delicious. I eat them all the time. Never had them out of tins - sounds disgusting.

Oddly enough lychee are the one of very few fruits that are quite similar to the fresh fruit coming out of a tin. As long as they're not in overly sweetened syrup, lychee, longan and rambutan are all very good tinned.
If I were to insist on any one of them being fresh, it would be rambutan

Thai freeze-dried maggots. Tasted like chicken, texture like thin strips of crisp. Would eat again.

Generally when it comes to exotic fruit it's disappointing - Star fruit and dragon fruit are both ridiculously bland given their appearance. Lychees, though, are lovely. I did have a tin of them once and I didn't rate that, though I can't remember why - either way I eat them rarely enough that it's worth getting them fresh.

It's not recent, but I ate a load of crunchy ants with aguardiente booze once. Colombians, you see. Big fat bottomed ones, as were the ants, ho ho.

Also someone's mummy once gave me a custard apple. What the blue blazes that was I an still at a loss to say.

Durian, strongly foul and odd smelling, yet tastes remarkably mild. Wouldn't really have it too often personally.
The whole being betrayed by my sense of smell thing hurts my feelings

A bit boring, but I had some pastrami today (well, it was exotic to me, I'd never had it.) It's rather delicious.

Do you live in London? The delicatessen on the Charing Cross road (just up on the right from Edith Cavell) serves the most heavenly salt beef sandwiches. The falafel is lovely, too.
