As I am banned from my local chip shop..

I thought I would try my own battered fish. Turned out quite well (picture related) and was rather tasty. The fish is pollock, got it from sainsburys for £1.50 for 2 rather big fillets. I used one and froze the other one for another time.

I made the beer batter with flour, drop of oil, glug of san miguel, mixed untill it "has the viscocity of a tin of emulsion paint" then added some salt/pepper and a dash of cayenne pepper. Then coated the fish (I chopped it up into smaller pieces) and dropped it into a sauce pan with about 1 inch of oil in it.
Another thing I can add to my list of things I can cook :p

Overall, great success

Nice, it came out quite well :D. I've never battered and deep-fried fish at home before, I may do now.

You can't mention something like being banned from a shop without telling us why.

I love frying my own fish at home, but I'm far too paranoid about starting a hideous oil fire in my flat, so I don't do it very often.

Chips look good.

I'm just glad your parents don't keep onion vinegar in the house mate ... Turned out good by the looks of it.

Non- britfag here, this thread is relevant to my interests, I wanted to ask about fish'n'chips but was too embarassed.
So, you can make the fish in a a pan, right (no need for a deep- frying device)? What kind of vinegar do you put on your chips?
Also, how do you get banned from an eatery?

Yer I just used a small saucepan and put about 1 inch of veg oil in it.

>What kind of vinegar do you put on your chips?
Err I think its just "light" malt vinegar

>Also, how do you get banned from an eatery?

The only decent vinegar for fish and chips is malt vinegar which has been used to pickle onions, like in the chip shop. If you have pickled onions, I'd use the vinegar from the jar.

This. Very much this.

No matter what way you cook it, nothing will ever beat it being cooked in a chipshop. Ever. Another excellent thing you can buy from the chipshop is a savaloy.

This >>3686 guy here, just finished my first homemade beer- battered fish (camera's broken unfortunately). I used cod, flour, oil and stout for the batter. Fish turned out fuckin great, crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. I couldn't find malt vinegar, so I had remoulade with it.
Tasty and cheap snack.

It's a long story, really hate to spread rumours but it involves violence, swearing and lots of onion vinegar ...

No it's actually not. Someone got banned from their local chip shop and when people found out he denied it.
