This feels like a return to classic British comedy that's been absent a few years. Somewhere between PhoneShop and Green Wing. Multicultural London stuff but plenty of dry white humour too.

23506 Adam Curtis
Well, it seems we have a new Adam Curtis series that will be shown from mid-February.

https://deadline.com/video/adam-curtis-bbc-cant-get-you-out-of-my-head/

>It covers a wide range – including the strange roots of modern conspiracy theories, the history of China, opium and opiods, the history of Artificial Intelligence, melancholy over the loss of empire and, love and power. And explores whether modern culture, despite its radicalism, is really just part of the new system of power.

The greater part of me really does like Adam Curtis and sees a great deal of depth to the ideas he presents, but the lesser part of me feels he's been saying the same thing for decades. Looking forward to this anyway, it should be interesting looking at how he explains how we've been hoodwinked into believing symptoms to be root causes again.

Up to the final episode which I will save for later, like the otherlad, I've been finding quite a bit of the series really quite funny with regards to the unintended consequences of the last 200+ years of Western history, and even found it funny with the idea that the language and forms of power themselves are universal and blind - nobody is free from its grip, no matter how much fervour in system x or y they have. It reminded me of his series All Watched Over when it turned out that hippy communes just ended up being cults of personality and the enforcement of one will above everybody else's.

If I didn't laugh, I'd cry etc. etc.

He did repeat a lot of what he's already covered in films like Century of the Self, and All Watched Over as otherlad mentions, but I suppose for someone new coming in, that background context is necessary to set up the rest.

I get the feeling people like us who are familiar with the concepts in his older material might not be the target audience this time, and maybe he was aiming more at was today's highly radicalised Rudgwick/Twitter/Etc politic kids, who often fail to realise they're retreading ground that has been thoroughly trod before. The point seemed largely to be that every time this radical rhetoric comes around, they usually aren't the first, and nor will they be the last, to think they've cracked it, and ultimately only end up assimilated and subverted by the existing structures of power.

But this was an illusion.

I sort of get the idea that this series is considerably more meta than his previous ones - there are a hell of a lot of half-made allusions between the more visible and large-scale looting going on in Russia and China and what's going on in the UK and US where the looting of the economy by a few is more formally legalised and backed up with our states' views on what is acceptable and what is not. Even further, I would like to add, and I'm sure Adam would probably agree with this to some extent - the entire series is just a narrative thread that he has plucked out to help describe how and where things are going, so is he ultimately any better or worse off than a bog standard conspiracy theorist?

Let's get all femanista for a bit, lads. I was just scrolling down the list of IMDb's Top 250 - which are still all excellent films - and I was struck by just how male the list is. You have to go all the way down to The Silence of the Lambs before you get a lone female protagonist, and even then more people remember that film for Anthony Hopkins than Jodie Foster.

So I want to broaden my horizons - what are your favourite films about and starring women? I'm talking about ones that are mainly women in the cast - don't just say the Alien films.

For instance I liked The Help. I found Little Women mediocre, though.

I'm loving the entertainment nuggets per hour system of grading entertainment.

But what about suspense scenes? They become less suspenseful at speed. And what of action scenes? They move often move too quickly to really appreciate what's happening.

I guess you need to incorporate variable rate x E in your calculations. Maybe we can make a proposal to Netflix about constructing a variable video speed controller that adjusts videos to the optimum speed for a viewer for any given moment based on level of enjoyment from previous videos watched.

I find drama/comedy/entertainment in general just doesn't work sped up for me. (If it's so badly directed or edited that I need to change the speed, it's rubbish that's not worth watching to begin with)

But factual stuff, product reviews, etc. on youtube I'm regularly speeding things up, to around 1.25 to 1.75x depending on what sort of thing is going on and how fast the person is speaking.
I struggle with 2x speed, really just because of the audio quality making it to much effort to listen to.

OP here, I saw Three Billboards the other day. It's a very good film, but I as I suspected I certainly wouldn't include it in this thread. The protagonist is a woman but all the principal supporting characters are men, as might be expected when it's about a woman's relationship with the police. Rockwell, Harrelson, Dinklage - it's a very male film.

What an odd conclusion to come to from watching half an episode. It is actually nothing like that.I personally enjoyed it, though it is oddly paced. It's worth a watch imo and better than most stuff I've seen from Netflix.

HOWEVER, if you're going to watch one thing on Netty, then I'd recommend Unabomber. It's a really addictive show about a good-guy obsessive trying to profile the Unabomber from his cryptic letters and actions. Really watchable.

I saw Make Up when the Cinemas first reopened and it was a excellent kitchen sink horror/thriller. Not sure whereabouts it is available at the moment.

For something a bit more indie, try and track down some films by a guy called John Williams. He makes some really good horror comedies, The Slayers and Crispy's Curse are excellent. I think they have US DVDs, not sure about UK releases, but he'll probably sell you copies directly. He has a new anthology coming out soon too.

I've been watching loads of foreign films recently, and I was struck by something I find quite interesting. When I watch a foreign film in a Germanic language like Dutch or German, it feels impactful to me because the intonation, tone, sentence pacing and structure of the actors feels quite similar to English, which makes their performances feel about as compelling as they would be if they were in English.

When I watch something in French, Spanish, or Italian, it often feels like a word salad of peculiar sounds that are either lacking in distinct emotions, or are over emphasising one particular emotion. Spanish and Italian are a slurry of fast paced words and French is a blur of people making "bleugh" sounds.

Is it just me or have any of you noticed the same thing? I used to think that English kind of sat "in between" Romance and Germanic languages, but I now realise it's firmly a Germanic language with a bunch of loanwords thanks to our Norman enslavement.

I think what you've noticed are differences in stress and isochrony. The rhythms of French or Spanish are closer to Mandarin or Japanese than English.

hAS ANY sorry capslock, has anyone seen or heard of this BBC show? It's a BBC comedy based around British soldiers in Afganhistan. I'm asking because I don't like it, but I'm not sure if it's just because it's dated and I didn't see it at the time, or if it's just really not a good show.
As far as I can tell, they've just got a few comic actors and made them bully each other while in "a setting". The LGBTQ+ stereotype of media having a "breeding couple" seems extremely accurate for this. There are two attractive people who are supposedly attracted to each other but they have no chemistry. It's as though they took some already existing stereotypes and actors from popular shows (Green Wing) and expected people to find them funny without anything else.

Alright you two.

I'm usually pretty good at tracking down songs that people half-remember, like a shitter version of Shazam, but this one has me stumped. A mate has given me a line and a basic melody of a song he remembers from an advert.

It's a happy upbeat song, which goes something along the lines of "I found something new, and baby I'll share it with you".

On my Google hunt, I came across this unanswered forum post (pic related) from January 2006, from someone clearly looking for the same thing. Now, they say it's from a Mars advert they saw at the cinema, but I haven't been able to track down any Mars adverts that match that description.

So, do any of you lads remember this? Cheers.

>The BBC is considering the case for bringing back BBC Three as a regular TV channel, four years after it was taken off air and moved online. The youth channel, which commissioned hits like Normal People and Fleabag, will also have its budget doubled.

>It left linear TV in 2016 to save £30m, and because the corporation said young people were watching more shows online. The BBC now says it is "considering the case" for returning the channel to "linear television". A BBC spokesman said "we'd be wrong not to back a service that is doing better than anyone could have ever conceived". The turnaround will be formally announced as part of the BBC's annual plan on Wednesday, but there was no news about the fate of BBC Four, which has been rumoured for the axe.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-52719883

There's lots of rumours at the moment that BBC Four will either become a repeats channel or be hived off into some international market channel. I guess the focus of the BBC these days is producing buying shit that nobody will watch.

How much does the Corporation make from its global wing then? Selling syndication rights to things like Doctor Who and Clarkson-era silly Top Gear must be worth a fair bit and easily cover the cost of cheap quiz shows that have been a thing for 20 odd years. If there's going to be any review of funding, what could reasonably be assumed if the Corporation introduces a digital only license? I can think of a fair few negatives, mostly privacy issues and the associated costs of administrating and maintaining whatever system is decided on.

It's a bit late now, I'll more than likely be back when it isn't dark.
