I don't deny that. But I don't think that's the widespread feeling.

The UK is the country in the world most similar to Australia, with the exception of perhaps New Zealand. On the gravestones of WWI Australian soldiers are words like "Our Daddy Died For Britain And Us", and "Going to fight for King and Country," alongside "A Dinkum Aussie," and "RIP. His sleeping eyes hold visions of Australian skies," and "A True Australian Patriot." And they lie beside the British, Canadian, and NZ war dead.

Our British heritage is undeniable, despite the huge American cultural influence. An Australia completely purged of British influence would be alien to me. However we no longer celebrate Empire Day or sing "God Save The Queen" (unless the Queen is visiting, then they need to find some people who know the words). Contemporary Australian culture is radically different to the culture of 100, 50, or 30 years ago.

The debate over changing the flag doesn't have much to do with Britain. It's not a secret plan to piss off "those bloody poms". The goings on in Britain just don't have much sway in Australia anymore. You're on the other side of the world and the Queen doesn't really do anything anyway. A huge amount of our population does not have ancestral links to Britain. Having what is essentially a completely different nation's flag on our own just seems a little silly.

That all being said, and despite this long rant, I really don't care much about the issue. I don't care if Australia keeps the current flag or adopts a new one so long as they don't change it to something horrifically tacky. Knowing our politicians though that would almost certainly happen.
So in my view it's better to keep the current one for the time being.
