Hey art. Im not sure how you guys feel about graffiti of any sort but ive been doing it for a while now and feel ive hit a creative brick wall.
Infact, if you could poke holes in the picture ive attached id be more than grateful. Im really in need of some constructive criticism so i can improve. If you could refrain from "Lol ur shit give up" id appreciate that too.

(It hasnt any colour because im too poor to afford the type of pen required to make it look as good as possible)

Have you thought about doing graffitti versions of classic paintings?

I completely expect someone to post a link to just such work which will make me look somewhat of a dildo.

work on your handstyle a lot more and create your own lettering by drawing basic shapes over one another and such, draw lightly and use a rubber and then go over it with a thicker pencil or do the fill and then the outlines and such.

Am I supposed to see something when I look at these pictures apart from a weave of abstract shapes? Does it eventually resolve like a Magic Eye or something?

I'm more like Edward would have been before he found a spray can, yet I think your work is mint. Well done. Since you have talent and are skilled I might suggest some hallucinogen like DMT or LSD for help along revelatory lines. Set and setting mind, we don't want things getting out of hand.

I've dabbled (more "street art" though, characters I made and that) but nothing worth posting.
I'd do it more if I was better at doing highlights and stuff, and could design better writing, I can barely think of anything that doesn't seem derivative.

Any tips OP? You seem pretty good at design at least (can't comment on writing, you didn't post any)

I've found a method that makes design really simple. Ill grab a piece of paper in the next few hours or tommorow morning and ill make a quick step by step guide for you. However it seems to create letters of a very linear style. Youll see that most of your pieces look somewhat similar using my method. Thats sort of why i created this thread. My pieces seem to look incredibly similar to me and I just cant figure out another method of design to get out of this rut.
I came up with my style etc all on my own. I did copy a few pieces from the internet when i first started out, just to get a feel for it. But obviously i wasnt satisfied looking at artwork that wasnt my own. So after years of practice and looking constructively at my own shit work i managed to find a style that fit, was easy to replicate and looked decent.
I imagine your characters went through a similar process.

I'm only slightly beyond the copy stuff stage.

Every time I have an idea that seems good in my head I try and get it drawn and it looks like a worse copy of something I've seen somewhere...

As for changing style/having another style the only thing I can think of is for you to sit down and try and think of new ideas, my best idea I've had this way, though I'm still not sure it's good:

The idea is to start with 1 shape for every letter then *cut* stuff away from it to make each letter, it might actually look alright with a bit of work... (I used triangles)

Yea, i know what you mean with the idea in your head thing. Theres not really much you can do about it except practice.

Assuming you tag (if you dont, try and come up with something) split the tag into its seperate letters like in the picture ive submitted. Ive put them quite far apart for you here just so you get a good idea of what i mean. With practice you can begin to put them closer together for an entirely different style.
Ive used S K O P E here just because its easiest for me.

The tag youve put down will be the base to what your core lettering will look like, so bare that in mind.

Once youre happy with what youve got down on paper, begin to put rectabgular shapes around the bits of the letters that you want to be thicker. I usually go with the vertical lines only, but you could always do the horizontal ones too.

I apologise for the crap quality of the pictures aswell, my phone camera is dodgy as fuck. You might have to squint a little.

After youve sectioned off the parts that you want to be thicker, pictured above; you can begin to join them up.
Keeping in mind the bits that arent rectangular need to be thinner, follow the shape of the tag. It might take a bit of practice to get it right, but after a few tries youll get it bang on no trouble.
When youre finished you should have something similar to what ive got pictured here.

I recommend just leaving it there until you can get it done fluently with little trouble, simply for the practice.
When youre happy, or if you dont really give a shit, you can start to flesh out the letters.
As you stated in your post youve started removing bits of letter. I do something similar, pictured here. Adding on large chunks to certain parts of lettering, and removing small chunks of others can really make your letters look alot better. Itll look very rough until you get a pen and outline the essential lines, but thats ok. This part takes quite a long time to get right at first. Dont worry too much about grabbing the rubber at this point, it doesnt really matter unless it really bothers you. Its about getting down that creative vibe. Take your time with it. Sit back, put on some chilled out hip-hop and let it go.

Youll come up with something like this when youre done.

From there you can add things like 3D. For the effect ive pictured, just choose a point on the page that you want to gear your 3D towards and draw a small circle. Then just draw lines directly toward the circle from the corners of your lettering.

Sorry my piece looks a bit shit, i got it done in about 10minutes because im a busy bee.

Hope this helps a bit anyway. Cheers for your advice too. Think ill put the headphones on a bit later and get in the zone for a new style. Ill report back anyway.
