The room in my new house is incredibly bland. There needs to be something on the walls.

Deciding what to put on them has put me in a bit of a dilemma.

Am I too old for posters? I feel at 21 I am, but then I feel too young for 'serious' framed things as well. Especially when said exhibits wouldn't really display my real taste, just a pretend grownup one.

Nor am I a fan of the middle ground of framing my juvenile interests. I want it to look casual, not like I'm such a hardcore fan of x that I have it framed. Especially when x is probably going to be some anime theme or similar. Before you say, mai waifu type things won't be going up.

Strangely I'd quite like some posters that look worn out, creased and crinkled, like they're second hand posters, it would give the room that well-worn look. I do the same with trainers. I walk around the garden in them for a few days before I wear them in public. I'm not sure how much of this is out of personal taste or insecurity, but that's another topic.

Anyway as I've typed this post I've decided I'm probably taking it too seriously, and will stick whatever I think looks nice up. Poster, print or otherwise. But I suppose its worth asking, anyone ever thought the same?

I got my pal to paint me stuff after she was kind enough to paint me something when I was unwell.

Rather enjoyed it, it gave the room personal character and a touch I thought was lovely.

If you don't have a willing paint robot, that route will cost you an arm and a leg.

Unfortunately I don't have anyone to do that for me.

Of course its not the same, but I've been looking at etsy.com and the people there do a lot of really great posters, paintings and so on. I don't want things to look cliche you know, I'm not talking about putting up Scarface posters, that Bob Marley one or whatever.

I'm 26 now and I wish I had kept my Kevin Smith movie posters because I would quite like to hang them in my hallway, but I threw them out on a whim because my ex told me in an argument that I was childish. Which is ironic, considering her campaign to spread the word I couldn't get it up when I left her because I realised I was gay. She was a bit dim.

Don't be too worried about what others think, lad. If you like anime then by all means put up a framed poster. I seen an Attack on Titan mock up poster for a much rmored live action movie and if I had the cash to canvas I would. It is that good.

Why not go for the medium and put up some pre-framed posters/prints?

I'm a pretty talented artist, I could draw you something and you could print that off and hang it up. Let me know what you'd like if that might be of interest.

I found that my local HMV does maxi poster frames for a tenner, most places want a silly amount of money for a 60X91 cm poster frame.

I use the double-page photos from the middle of a paper the Guardian in lieu of posters; even if you buy five papers before you find one you like it's still likely to be an economy. At the moment I have a Punch and Judy on the beach at Weymouth, Preston Bus Station and a selection of photos from the 'Only in England' exhibition.

To clarify I'm not a crazed jingoïst, but I'm abroad at the moment and it's nice to have a reminder of home. Perhaps I'll put up something a little more outward-looking when I get back.

Another clarification - I'm not usually quite that zealous about diæresis but since going abroad I've been using the extended keyboard and the novelty hasn't yet worn off.

I have this on my wall at the moment. I have an Aaron Horkey print (http://www.richardgoodallgallery.com/rggstore/music-posters/aaron-horkey/isis-shades-of-the-swarm-west-coast-tour-2007-p-13067.html) I want to put up one day, but haven't found a decent frame for it yet.

I have a copy of Charles Booth's poverty map of London (I saw someone else with it on this site and stole their idea as it happens) and a few things I've bought off the street. I particularly like a pastel on canvas portrait of a skeleton smoking a cigarette I picked up in Amsterdam, despite the fact that months later I found out it was not original, and was in fact a copy of a Van Gogh painting.

I have nothing on my walls.

I think I preferred it when I was young enough to get away with posters.

I was criticised by a friend that came to stay the weekend for not having any decoration in my flat. I now have a neon bar sign of my favourite NHL team, a hockey jersey for my old university team (which I designed myself, very sentimental) and a large frame half-filled with postcards.

As decoration goes, I already feel like I'm being too loud. Though, I would love to live in a nice old house with proper wood everywhere and cover the walls with paintings of horses and those odd brass contraptions you find on the walls and shelves of pubs.

I don't know why I'm posting a picture of my flat. I'm very lonely.

I really like monochrome stuff, but I reckon it would look a bit sterile if I didn't have colourful furniture and so on. I have a couple of framed photographs by photographers I like, plus a wall sticker thingy of the world. Pardon the mess and poor quality of lighting, I've just moved in.

And I do think lighting is important and overlooked. As you can see from my pictures, my only light source in this room currently is an energy saving bulb with a cheap paper lampshade, the entire room is bathed in a sickly pale yellow, which obviously isn't ideal, and no matter how nice I decorate the place it'll never look right.

What I plan to do is add uplighting behind large furniture, just to be able to control the hue of things. If you do this with LEDs you can go into using actual RGB colours but that's not to everyone's taste.

This is the type of lighting I've done before. Bit brash for some, but higher quality LED strips can be very subdued.

Cheers. It's worth noting these wall decals are very easily removable, they don't damage the paint in any way, so they're perfect for rented places.

The futurama bit looks ace because it's so neatly done. If the rest was arranged in a tidier way (not sure how though) it'd all look just as good. Frames make it all look nicer too, but they get pricey.

My bedroom at home still has posters I put up when I was 15 or so. My girlfriend made me take down the Ian Watson one though, just so happened to be on the same poster as Dave Mustaine.

In my first term of uni I spent a while buying some really nice posters, had this really cool Jimi Hendrix one with loads of colour and a picture of a dark pool room which I really liked. When I came back for second term the cleaners had removed them...
