Dunno if anyone will read this but it's to do with an expression of wealth. Until very recently, only the rich could afford to stay in all day and not work the field, so they never got very tanned. Peaple would wear make-up in order to appear to have lighter skin and therefore appear to spend more time indoors. With the advent of easy international travel, and low wage office jobs, the rich would have more disposable income with which to travel to exotic climates on a whim, and therefore would arrive back home more tanned. Hence, people will now go abroad solely to darken thier skin, buy 20 minutes in a sunbed, or just sunbathe outside more.

I guess that very recently being pale would also be seen as a sign of not socialising much and dwelling in your basement playing WoW.
