I fell into a once a month thing years ago (making it still a bit random on when) and it seems to work really well for me. But I suspect I'm a bit of an outlier here and in reality it becomes an expectation where I'm forking over £10-15 for dying leaves.
There's me still feeling proud of my Christmas present. Thanks for the reminder, OP.
I tend to only go for flowers if it's a really nice arrangement or unexpected in some way. Last two times were:
- A bouqet on her birthday that was delivered while she was away at work. Included a really nice card with a personal message, and it was unexpected as we lived a few hours apart and I wasn't there in person to get her anything. Also had lovely sunny colours during an unseasonably drab spat of weather.
- Stereotypical after-argument flowers which I picked up, along with a big meal from her favourite takeaway place, which went over well.
She works, so she'll buy things she wants herself, meaning I have to put extra effort into thinking of more sentimental gifts.

There's nothing wrong at all with a nice gesture, and £10-15 to give someone you care for a pleasant surprise really isn't all that much when you consider the other wank we often spend our money on. That said, it might pay to mix up your nice gestures a bit more. You know she likes flowers, but what else might bring about an unexpected smile? Even a tiny bit of thought goes a long way.
Now excuse me while I mull over what I'm going to get/do within two weeks...
I bought her tulips from Aldi the other week because she's finding this lockdown a bit hard. Cant remember the time before that. I'll probably buy her daffodils when I see them in shops because they're her favourites and they're only about a quid.

I can only admire your forward thinking; a mate married a bird whose favourite colour is green and saved a fortune by getting emeralds.
My pick is usually tulips as there's less risk I'll accidentally commit some floral faux pas but they're not considered unimaginative like roses which are really an anniversary/valentines thing.
