I'm not complaining, just wondering.

No, because it generally only recommends what you've been watching.

As a guilty pleasure I sometimes watch conspiracy videos and political punters to point and laugh at them, the idea that the algorithms track my taste as sincere bothers me.

The algorithm doesn't care about what you like, it only knows what you watch. Also:

If you click "like" on good stuff but mainly watch shit, it'll recommend shit. The algorithm is brutally, aggressively optimised to maximise view time. That's why it tends to recommend alt-right and conspiracy stuff to a relatively broad audience - from the algorithm's perspective, turning you into a nutcase is a massive win, because those people watch a shitload of YouTube videos. The algorithm doesn't care about your wellbeing, it just wants you to keep watching.

It's largely the same on Facebook - the algorithm optimises for "engagement", which is effectively a proxy for time spent on the site. People who see cute pictures of their nieces and nephews click "like" and get on with their day, but people who see political stuff that makes them furious will often spend all night arguing with people on Facebook. The algorithm doesn't know or care that it's turning you into a Corbynite or a TERF or a racist, it just knows that the content it showed you massively increased your engagement statistics.

OP might be a carpet-bagger, or his data might look vaguely like that of a carpet-bagger and the YouTube algorithm knows that carpet-baggers spend a lot of time on YouTube.

>IT TENDS TO RECOMMEND ALT-RIGHT AND CONSPIRACY STUFF

I really don't see this, I'm subscribed to hundreds of youtube channels, of the political ones I have a few lefty, mostly center and centre right.
But I am subscribed to Millennial Woes, Mark Collett and American Renaissance, who are frequently described as "alt right". In the case of Woes and Collett they even embrace the label. I am also subscribed to Fully Sourced, EdgyDtv and Truthstream Media which almost certainly meet the criteria for "conspiracy" content.

I watch a couple of hours of political content every day while commuting to work and surely with these channels in my subscription feed, I should get at least *SOME* "alt right" or "conspiracy" recommendations.
But no, literally every recommended video is either Joe Rogan, late night US chat shows or clips from mainstream news sources.
I don't even click the recommendations except maybe 2 Joe Rogan clips, ever. Yet they keep trying to make me watch James Corden, GQ and 60 Minutes Australia.

I'm not saying you are lying, but I have yet to see any evidence of youtube pushing anything other than "safe" mainstream content, that your average billion dollar multinational would want to stick their ads on.

I think this is based on demographic info. Back when I just started my Google account and had no data to use except region, gender, and age, all I got were sports cars and football clips.

The tone of your post implies you didn't watch those videos and now have different things in your recommendations. Are you some kind of poofter?

Youtube is a minefield. It's the same circlejerk as Reddit and the like, except you don't know which circlejerk you're walking in on until you've watched a few minutes of the video and sussed out if they're sneering at those deluded kool-aid chugging liberals, or patting themselves on the back for being marginally less of a knobhead than a conservative.

my favourite ones, i think, are the one who have lefty views behind the scenes, but keep a lid on it because they don't want to look like an SJW fisher-ponce. i know that means we're likely to see eye to eye on most things and the ones we don't won't feel egregious, because clearly they have enough perspective not to try make me feel guilty about finding attractive women attractive and as such liking the media i consume to feature them.

I tend to look at HowToBasic and local transport things, so of course I get recommendations for loads of foamers moaning about Pacers rather than more insane Aussies ruining kitchens.

Northern's new fleet of trains are less reliable than the heavily-criticised Pacers they replaced, figures show.

Rail industry figures show the breakdown rate for the company's £500m 101-strong fleet is higher than for the 1980s-built rail-buses.
