Fireman Sam axed by fire chiefs for being 'outdated' and not 'inclusive' enough
Fire chiefs have axed much-loved children’s TV character Fireman Sam for being “outdated” and not “inclusive” enough.
Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service dropped the 32-year-old character, who is white and male, from promotional material after residents complained he “doesn’t reflect the fire service today.” Fireman Sam will be replaced by three new characters created in-house: fire extinguisher shaped Freddy, Filbert and Penelope.
Les Britzman, the service's Chief Fire Officer, told Good Morning Britain he was trying to increase female recruitment to the service.
I don't give a fuck about 'PC gawn mad' or the hypocrisy of replacing one white male fireman mascot with another. I just want to draw your attention to the fact that the new mascot is PURE FUCKING NIGHTMARE FUEL.

Two male extinguishers for every one woman, seems about right. And you can't even buy blue extinguishers here.
Still though, what the fuck. They look a bit like the Smash aliens

They look like some kind of ill-conceived stab at bullet proof body armour from the 1890s.

I'm a bit perplexed how fireman Sam would not be representative of Britain, unless the racists are actually right I would assume that most of the population is still white and most firemen by virtue of pure body strength required to carry another person out of a burning building are male. in fact I don't have to, he bloody says in the article 95% of them are male, and I'm sure that is after the best will in the world to recruit women for decades.

>I just want to draw your attention to the fact that the new mascot is PURE FUCKING NIGHTMARE FUEL.
Don't forget to hold his nozzle firmly in your hand and watch out for spray, children.
>after residents complained
It reminds me of the problem Rod Serling talked about decades ago with letter-writers. Imbeciles complain and people listen to them.
|>>|| No. 20106
According to the article on the BBC the issue is with the word 'fireman' as they feel using that instead of 'firefighter' isn't inclusive and will create a subconscious bias in little girls that puts them off the fire service. They probably had a load of Guardian reading yoghurt knitters responding to their feedback questionnaire or something.
I don't know. I'd have thought it would have made more sense to use the female firemen in Fireman Sam as mascots than getting some burly bloke to dress up as a supposedly female blue fire extinguisher.

It's not the 1950s, that's not really the main requirement any more. Would you say the same about women paramedics?
Policemen don't have to be 6 feet tall anymore either, it's a disgrace.
apparently that part of the selection testing is dragging a 55kg casualty, which seems so low as to not be worth including, really

I just think women either have more sense, or less motivation, to take up risky or 'hard' jobs. You could explore that being sexism at work itself, men primed more for jobs requiring more bravado than self preservation, the push for blokes to 'be the hero' or whatever, and the lingering idea of women's work being altogether less crucial fields.
Or it's just that blokes are a bit thick.

It was found in one of the Scandi-nations, probably Norway, that the more they made their society equal, the more men and women tended to opt for careers in line with traditional gender roles.

You've not cottoned on have you lad.
The idea behind political correctness is nothing to do with inclusiveness or offending people. In reality it's pretty much just what George Orwell called doublethink.
It's not about encouraging more lasses to be firepersons. It's about internal acceptance of the truth that Britain is always going to be majority white, and that men will always primarily do physically strenuous jobs like fire fighting; but externally supporting the pretense that one day it will be a perfect 50/50 gender split in all jobs and all ethnicities will be equally represented.
Words are constantly redefined to mean the opposite of what they should. What it really is is a betrayal of any genuine efforts towards equality and diversity, by simply trying to reprogram people's thoughts through language. It's a lie about liberating women escape oppression by instead just consigning them to wage slavery. It's a fantasy of helping to stop racial prejudice by using nicer sounding words while the real issues go unaddressed.
It's no coincidence that the modern idea of political correctness started under neo-liberals like Blair, who were in themselves selling us deregulated free market capitalism under the guise of the very opposite idea, socialism.

I feel like adding -man to the end of things is only an issue because make it one. You don't look at the word woman and assume they're a bloke.
>It's not the 1950s, that's not really the main requirement any more
Won't this impact the erotic calendar market?

>I feel like adding -man to the end of things is only an issue because make it one.
That's what annoys me, the etymology of 'man' means human, doesn't it? Despite how we use the word for gender delineation now, fireman means 'fire human', I'm pretty sure.

Fireman Sam just hasn't been the same since they ditched Mal Pope's original song. As usual for a TV theme, it's even got a bit in the middle that you never got to hear.

Is it prehaps a contextual choice? like the way they say fuck and cunt in deadwood, but never would have at the time, as their actual swear words like 'tarnation' have become completely silly to our ears.

>It's not the 1950s, that's not really the main requirement any more.
My concern is entirely a capacity to perform the job without a loss of quality, as far as I'm aware now firefighters have to carry more weight because we care about their safety more, and we don't use things like asbestos gasmasks anymore but oxygen tanks.
>Would you say the same about women paramedics?
>Policemen don't have to be 6 feet tall anymore either, it's a disgrace
Paramedics I can't see any good reason for a gender division.
Also the average person has ballooned in weight since 1950s and I don't see how you can get over needing to carry them that technology doesn't exist in a way that is practical for the kind of obstacles encountered.
As opposed to police, where they don't need to see over people’s heads and pursue them on foot because the local CCTV is tracking people for them.
I'm not talking about excluding women, I'm talking about the reality of why they are less likely to meet the physical requirements, am I going to have to point the obvious of why the Olympic games are divided by gender, or should we take it as read. I actually know a woman fire constable, and she as you would imagine could snap most people like a twig.
>apparently that part of the selection testing is dragging a 55kg casualty, which seems so low as to not be worth including, really
You'll notice the word 'selection' that is obviously the base level they start from when they haven't devoted their life to training to carry people, rip open a car, and holding a high pressure hose in place.
|>>|| No. 20127
It was a stylistic choice, but it came off, to me at least, as a bit embarrassing. They use a lot of modern music in the show and it works non-diagetically quite well, but watching a load of fellers swing trumpets around while modern rock music plays is just a bit silly.

>Paramedics I can't see any good reason for a gender division
Paramedics have to lift people too.
|>>|| No. 20132
Do they? I assumed they needed to just move them into recovery position at most, please correct me if I am mistaken. Which is considerably easy task then moving someone expectantly out of a collapsing building filled will smoke and carrying them down several stories of ladder, which is not an unusual training scenario for a firefighter.

I'd assume when the ambulance arrives they carry them out of the house with equipment. Why would you not leave them there until the ambulance arrives you mental?
|>>|| No. 20139
There's only so much lifting equipment you can carry on an ambulance. Some specialist bariatric ambulances might have a patient winch, but most are lucky to have an airbag lifting system. Many patients need to be urgently removed from very awkward positions, giving the crew no choice but to manhandle the patient.
In the US, nearly a quarter of ambulance staff experience a career-ending back injury; the UK isn't far behind.

The paramedic comes in the ambulance, what the fuck are you even talking about?
And the fact you can imagine a world where paramedics can use 'equipment' but firefighters have to carry people everywhere over their shoulders is astonishing.
|>>|| No. 20141
>The paramedic comes in the ambulance, what the fuck are you even talking about?
Paramedics usually don't come in an ambulance they arrive by separate methods to stabilise condition until ambulances arrive.
>And the fact you can imagine a world where paramedics can use 'equipment' but firefighters have to carry people everywhere over their shoulders is astonishing.
Ambulances usually come equipped with folding beds and stretchers. Which is fine if you just need to get people in and out of a normal house. Or off the street.
The diiferance with fire fighters is they are trained to handle debris and obstructions where you couldn't nessicerily negotiate that equipment through.
I suppose you are about to lead up with 'well what about in those situations don't the medical people also so that?' And the answer is no. They get the fire fighters to do it.

That's low, not high. Unless everywhere burns down every week and everyone is constantly being rescued from burning buildings. Or maybe if Sam is (was?) the only firefighter in the country.
|>>|| No. 20147
A fully qualified firefighter earns around £30,000 a year. Saving one life every eight years seems like a pretty shitty return on investment, especially considering how many lives a paramedic would save in those eight years.
|>>|| No. 20148
Firefighters are actually one of the oldest state run professions, In Rome the first firefighters were private organisations and it ended up becoming racketeering pretty quickly it is actually how Crassus, (of the first Triumvirate with Julius Caesar and Pompey the great) made his money and he was super rich.
So it is actually a fantastic return on an investment in that our society isn't run by men who will only put out the fire in your house if you agree to sell it to them at a significantly reduced rate.
|>>|| No. 20149
No, it's just put out by people who've already taken 30-40% of everything you earned.

Wouldn't it be a better racket to set people's houses on fire and then demand payment to put it out?
|>>|| No. 20151
Not really. Once they owned the house they rented it back to them. Landlord is the second finest parasitic profession you can perform below only seagull, and it was more socially acceptable than pure arson. Not that they didn't probably perform arson to create that position.

Female Royal Marine and Army recruits are suffering career-threatening injuries from wearing a kit-carrying system designed for men.
The high-tech £79 million Virtus battle equipment system is causing women trying to become Britain's first commandos and infantry soldiers to endure agonising leg and hip problems, according to scientists.
They say the 90-litre capacity rucksack is too big for most female troops while the webbing pouches used to carry ammunition and worn around the waist hurt their hips, which are naturally wider than a man's.
Troops who have suffered lower-limb injuries while wearing Virtus include the first female Royal Marine recruit, Philippa Birch. The super-fit international rower spent months recovering from a stress fracture after collapsing during a march over Dartmoor. At the time she was carrying equipment weighing 70 lb and a rifle.
We should have it so that the only kit female marines have to carry is a hairbrush, lipstick and tampons.

|>>|| No. 20216
The thing is, when it's Jews, it's not only racist but plausible. They are a deeply self loathing people, and while he almost certainly didn't set his career trajectory with the explicit aim of deposing Are Sam, once he found that power to be in his hands he couldn't resist the temptation. Another figure of the white, European man's culture to subvert, another step closer to vengeance for the grievous wounds the Jewish people have allowed to be inflicted upon themselves by white Europeans over the years.
It's like that film Oldboy, but with entire cultures. They know how to hold a grudge, and they're not going to stop at Fireman Sam.
