Wondering if anyone knew much about American Football? Went to see my mate play for our university team yesterday, seemed like it'd be good fun (yes I did understand what's going on, I have a basic understanding of the game) and I was thinking of perhaps giving it a go next year. Anyone know which position might favour a shortish but bulky top half, average sprint speed sort of guy? I doubt it matters HUGEly given the level play of am. football here in the UK, of course it'll have some bearing. My mate's of fairly similar build (albeit more muscular, I'm working on that) and he plays cornerback. Wide receiver looks pretty fun.

There is quite a large youth movement for American Football in the UK. It's hard to keep them interested beyond High School age, but if there are any lads there that have done it since they were kids they will have had really good training by real Americans from a young age so don't underestimate them.

I do casual security at an RFU stadium and much as didn't care much about rugby when I started I'm beginning to get into it.

Don't know if this is relevant but the Harlequins vs. London Irish game was terribly boring, the best London Irish ever seemed to do was match Harlequins for a short while before they were loosing again. Barely saw any of their supporters at the stadium so that might have been why.

I think all-seater stadia was an overreaction in the first place if it was genuinely just meant as a crowd safety measure with regard to Hillsborough. They were, however, probably at least partway responsible for lessening crowd violence, and therefore not an entirely bad idea.

In the current climate I think we can ditch the concept, though. I'd like to be able to stand at a ground again.

Sunderland have taped up the seats of fans who refuse to sit down during games at the Stadium of Light. Supporters of the club who persistently stand during matches have been suspended from using their season tickets. A photo circulated on Twitter shows a seat with a note on it saying: "This season card has been suspended due to persistent standing."

The club has issued a warning on its website about people who break the law on standing during a football match, and insisted it must act to protect the safety and the view of other fans. It said it has received an "increasing number of complaints", particularly from fans in the South Stand, which say the game is being spoiled by others who stand throughout the 90 minutes.

Last time I went to see Hull City I made the mistake of sitting in the West Stand; almost everyone there were either a family or old people that spent the whole match complaining (although to be fair, Peterborough did win 3-1). I could see these being the type of people who would complain about anything that has the risk of creating an atmosphere. It felt dead.

I believe >>4548 was poking fun at >>4547's apparent lack of progressiveness and probably believes that there should be a female athlete in the shortlist for SPOTY regardless of whether or not any female athletes have done enough sporting-wise this year because to base it solely on merit and not take gender into account would be sexist, you see.

Actually there would be a better chance for a female to win it if the public were allowed to vote on the shortlist instead of having "papers" and "executives" vote for their shortlists. In all honesty, I would prefer if there was a separate award for women. Spilt the SPOTY into male and female awards.

I would also like to add that I don't appreciate your tone. You are marginally better than the "PC GONMAD" idiot.

What is the point of the Paralympics? I understand that these people train hard but are cruelly unable to compete on an equal footing (no pun intended) with able bodied athletes, but that applies to alot of people. How about an Olympics for people born fat or asthmatic, or running for people with short legs or flat feet? In the context of the Olympics and the physical perfection it embodies, 99.9% of the world's population is disabled.

I enjoy watching it for the technology and I think it can be an excellent driver of technology. I firmly believe that in 10 years the runners will be outpacing the able bodied Olympians and I think that is what the Paralympics are about, much like Formula One. That's why when Pistorius moans about the other guy's longer blades I don't particularly have any sympathy. I also don't want to hear the word 'brave' anymore. There's nothing brave about turning up to a sporting event that's been tailored to ensure you get to enter when you wouldn't make the grade in a regular sporting competition. If this is really about the disabled being brave they should replace the medals with Blue Peter badges.

Yes, I know I'm an absolute cunt. I'm just interested in hearing opinions on the validity of the Paralympics.

>To promote the understanding of the plight of disabled people in society.
I get that, which is my main beef. It's not a real competition. It's a massive PR stunt. Much as I care about the plight of the disabled, a huge international competition with international TV coverage is way over the top. Also, these people are the lucky disabled. What about an Olympics for paraplegics or those with locked in syndrome? Those people really suffer.

>If you train hard enough as a completely able bodied person, i.e. no debilitating illnesses, no physical reason you can't be equal to others with 2 arms and 2 legs.
Maybe in some events, but 100m winners are born into it. Training won't increase the length of your legs.

I'll be charitable and assume you mean quadriplegia. Either way they are represented at the paralympics, many of the BC2 class players in the boccia can only move their heads, and as far as I recall you're not actually allowed on the wheelchair rugby teams unless you're tetraplegic or above.

Also, are you saying people with disabilities less profound than the examples you give don't 'really suffer'? Careful now.

These people will live their whole lives with varying degrees of disability, for various reasons, whereas you and I have the luxury of (hopefully!) living out our days as an able bodied human being. Let them have their fucking sports day.

The difference between them not being able to compete with able athletes is they are physically incapable of doing so, you are just too fucking lazy to try to.
