I meant skill, not entertainment value. A fight between a couple of tramps over a bottle of White Lightning is low on skill and technical ability, but that doesn't mean it can't be entertaining. The same also applies to Serena and her ape-like fists.

Compared to men, yes.

In 1998 Venus and Serena challenged Karsten Braasch to a tennis match during the Australian Open, as they were convinced that they could beat any man ranked outside the top 200 in the world. He had a few beers and smoked a few cigs before beating Serena 6-1 and Venus 6-2. Male tennis players are easily capable of chasing down shots that would be winners in the female game and they're able to hit the ball with more spin.

When Kim Clijsters was dating Lleyton Hewitt she admitted that she struggled to win a point when she played against him, nevermind an actual game. You have to remember that when Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs she was 26 years younger than him.

I don't know whether women have inherently lower skill or technical ability, and I'm sure the perception of such is quite subjective in many ways.

It reminds me of how there are different weight classes in boxing. Even though the rules are the same, the separation is to heighten the competition of the sport, to bring out the absolute apex in ability of everyone involved. I think when watching women's tennis you have to keep that in mind, that these are still the very best in their sport, just in a modified game. To borrow a boxing expression, you have to learn to see the 'pound-for-pound' talent to appreciate it.

>I'm sure the perception of such is quite subjective in many ways.

No, not really. It's quite clear from watching tennis that the women's game is behind the men's game because the male players have more physical power, athletism and can play a wider range of shots. You just have to look at the speed that the ball is hit with, the number and length of rallies, the amount of distance covered, speed around the court and other stats to find this out or to watch a few games to see the range of shots and tactics in use; a lot of the female circuit rely on twatting the ball like a mad bastard from the baseline, in the men's game there is far more variety as you'd get found out if your game was solely built around power.

>I think when watching women's tennis you have to keep that in mind, that these are still the very best in their sport, just in a modified game. To borrow a boxing expression, you have to learn to see the 'pound-for-pound' talent to appreciate it.

Like I said earlier, watching a couple of tramps fighting can have entertainment value from time to time. However, put them against Mike Tyson in his prime and they'd get absolutely annihilated.

I realise I'm sounding like a bit of a cunt here. I don't actually mind women's tennis, it's just nowhere near the standard of the men's game.

While I accept that there are fundamental biological differences between the male and female body that make males capable of hitting balls with more force, essentially comparing all of women's sports to tramp-fighting can only be described as deliberately inflammatory and completely ignoring >>4783's point about appreciating a sport played at the highest level by equally matched opponents. Such obvious provocativeness sadly detracts from his otherwise fair remarks about sports, and makes me think he's just exaggerating because he hasn't the intelligence to express a point without hyperbole.

The problem is that women's sport isn't at the highest level in any respect.

A featherweight boxing match is a qualitatively different spectacle to a heavyweight bout. Lighter boxers are faster, more agile and have better endurance than their heavyweight counterparts. The best all-round fighters are inevitably heavyweights because of the overwhelming advantage of strength and power, but lightweight boxers have a different and equally valid skillset.

Many sports have equivalent physiological differences. The best sprinter will never be the best marathon runner and vice-versa, a 90kg cyclist might be a world champion time triallist but could never be king of the mountains and so on.

I can't think of a single female athlete who is absolutely the best in the world by any measure. Women are absolutely dominated by men even in sports where the obvious physiological differences are irrelevant, like darts or snooker. Even in countries like Australia with completely gender-equal sports development, the gap doesn't seem to be closing between men and women. In any sport you care to mention, elite female athletes almost never exceed the standard of a half-decent male amateur.

I could be wrong, but I'm sure that when Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs he was only allowed one serve and she was allowed to hit it up to the doubles sideline. Still, he won a fair few games in the match - the modern day equivalent would be pitching John McEnroe against Serena (although at the time the #1 female tennis player was Margaret Court and Riggs had already beaten her comfortaby).

I think it's possible for one to be composed and emotional. I'm thinking of Federer when I say this. He looks extremely graceful and restrained on court (I think the most angry I've ever seen him get was quietly saying 'it looked out to me' to an umpire) but damned if he doesn't cry like a bairn if a match slips out of his grasp, or if he wins and his daughters run down on court.

When he was knocked out he stormed off without shaking hands and never gave his victor any credit. In comparison, Rafa shook hands, took time to meet the crowd and complimented his opponent on his game. It's not the first time Federer has behaved like this.

Really? That's difficult to imagine, I don't think I've ever seen that match.

I've not seen many Nadal matches, but I can't think of any other tennis players who have come across as open or likeable with the crowds. I was talking to someone about Murray recently, and the more I see him in interviews the more I find his dour and dry responses quite endearing. He flat out refuses to play into any montage-driven media hype, and watching him undercut stupidly sentimental or invasive questions is refreshing.

I think I remember Tsonga being quite a passionate but not angry/negative kind of figure.

They should play five sets, I agree. Today's final is a perfect example of where first-to-two results in a swift and hardly forgone conclusion - had it been best of five there's a possibility we'd still be watching it now, and the match would certainly have been more interesting.

The women should win as much as the men, though, that's only fair.

I tend to find myself rolling my eyes at Murray's affected indifference, it seems insultingly insincere to me, but I suppose it's preferable to the mindless platitudes that most of the rest trot out. A lot of the players are well aware they're talking rot, obviously - I remember Henman saying, after the media blitz following his disqualification, that there were correct answers and truthful answers, and that he was now electing to go for the former even though it made him come across like an idiot.

I'm glad Murray won. It'll enrage all the bigoted English Scots-hating types on Twitter who were flaunting their sour grapes before the match. Lovely. Hope it sticks in their throats.

There's always someone looking to knock down the tall poppies. Someone does a good job then it doesn't matter where they're from or if black or white, good on them, I say. It was an entertaining match.

>Wimbledon: ATP & WTA strip ranking points from Grand Slam over ban for Russians and Belarusians

>Players will not receive ranking points at Wimbledon following the decision to ban Russian and Belarusian competitors from the tournament.
>Players from the countries have been banned by the All England Lawn Tennis Club from all UK grass-court events after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

>"The stance we are taking is about protecting the equal opportunities that WTA players should have to compete as individuals," added the WTA, the women's governing body.
>"If we do not take this stance, then we abandon our fundamental principle and allow the WTA to become an example to support discrimination based on nationality at other events and in other regions around the world."

And my personal favourite highlight:
>The ATP decision means Serbia's Novak Djokovic - the defending men's champion - will lose his status as the world number one.
>Djokovic, a six-time champion at the All England Club, will be unable to retain the 2,000 ranking points he earned by winning the title last year and is only 680 ahead of nearest rival Daniil Medvedev.
Daniil Medvedev is Russian. Oops!

My own opinion is that I supported this decision originally, when they banned Russian players, but then they said any Russian player could still play if they were willing to denounce their government. But the whole point of the ban is to prevent Russian news from reporting on Russian winners. Russian news won't report on the players dissing Putin, but they would still report on the victories of any anti-Putin Russian tennis player, without anyone knowing they opposed the war. The whole ban became self-defeating at that point.

Alternative compromise: Russian players can still compete, but every available surface of the players and court is emblazoned with the words "Vladimir Putin is a homosexual" in Russian.
