I am not too sports savvy, so forgive me. When it is reported that Gareth Bale will be sold for a 100 million Euros, where will this money go? The club? Bale? His agent? Who does the money go to?

The money goes to Spurs. Sort of. Bale's agent will take a cut of the signing-on bonus, or a fee related to the salary, or both.

So the money goes to Tottenham but Bale gets nothing. Will he be have to negotiate his wages with Real then? Is that usually kept a secret?

What I couldn't get my head around was how much a player costs is also linked to the contract said player has with his current employer.

His agent will have negotiated the salary package separately. The money Real will pay to Spurs is partly for the commodity of Bale himself, and partly to compensate them for the remainder of his contract that he won't be serving. If they've got less than 6 months, then the player is entitled not to renew and leave on a free transfer (i.e. club gets nothing).

Yes.

>Is that usually kept a secret?
Sometimes. Often. Wages aren't always disclosed.

If a player has a contract with one club, then he cannot play for another unless he breaks that contract with the other club. For that to be valid, the other club has to agree to make the contract-breaking valid. This is why money is paid.

Fucking hell he looks like a moron in that image.

Wow, thanks. That clears up a lot. Have there ever been cases where clubs simply refuse any money and keep their players?

Yes, it happens regularly. If Tottenham didn't have fucktonnes of debt to service wanted to keep Bale, they could refuse his move, regardless of whether he wanted to go or not. In fact he's still in contract and didn't turn up for training today or yesterday, and they're considering fining him for not doing so.

100 million beans is a lot of beans.

Pretty much any deal that doesn't go through will be because the clubs can't agree terms. Look at the case of Luis Suarez. Arsenal want him, Liverpool are adamant he's not for sale. Whenever you hear of an offer which "triggered a clause in the player's contract", it's almost certainly one along the lines of requiring the club to notify the player if an offer above a certain value is made.

Something that happens more often than perhaps it should is players engaging in subterfuge to try and set up a transfer. Challenging the management, faking injuries, starting rumours, etc. Sometimes the first a club knows about its apparent interest in a player is when it appears in the press.

Isn't that what happened to Modric and Berbatov? Tottenham didn't want to sell them without charging extortionate amounts, so the players started moping around and not playing properly.
