Today it was reported there's a remote chance of London being asked to take over their obligation to host the 2016 Olympics. Specifically we were asked if it would be possible.

I'm so used to people saying before a major sporting event, "this is gong to be a complete mess, nothing is ready!!!". It never pans out though, everything normally goes off without a hitch. Hope this one is a complete fuck up though, just so I can watch the car crash.

That's only really happening in Rio. The PCC are still setting fire to buses on an almost daily basis in Sao Paulo. Some poor cunt got killed by a flying toilet at a football game in Recife the other day. Most of the other host cities are utter shitholes of the highest order (Salvedore, Fortaleza). If I could find a bookmaker who'd take the bet I'd lay £50 on a player being killed at some point during the tournament. It's that bad.

I expect England Italy to be 0-0, but the humidity will be a major factor in that. England can only play defensively if everyone is involved given how poor our back line is.

They're not a team to be overly fearful of, true they have Pirlo and Balotelli but they're nothing special. Plus, they're notorious slow starters, have picked a worse base than England and have the same issues with humidity as us. I entirely disagree. that was perhaps the most encouraging loss we could've had.

The defence was poop, but nobody expected them to be anything except poop. Leighton Baines suffered because he had no cover in front of him thanks to Rooney/Sterling/Welbeck/whoever else was there because of the free flowing attacking midfield we played covering him. That was Italy's (successful) line of attack. Gerrard wasn't particularly noticeable, but he's playing DMF so that's not really surprising, similarly with Hendo. Sterling was great, though his crosses left something to be desired. Rooney was shit, and his golden opportunity could've left the game with an England draw or win. I really think he should be dropped. Sturridge was solid.

Lallana/Wilshere didn't do enough in the time they were on to comment, but Barkley looked very bright, I hope he starts against Costa Rica, him and Sterling can tear them apart.

It's not dead yet. Uruguay were awful against Costa Rica, and even if we lose against Uruguay we can knock out a high scoring win against Costa Rica and go through on goal difference. Getting a win or a draw against Uruguay will be vital, however. Suarez will play, but he'll likely not be match fit.

You have to take into account Pirlo's very near goal on that free kick. I'm inclined to say it's mostly bias that allows people to call it a draw, in the same way Italy fans are likely saying it could well have been 3 - 1.

But in exactly the same way most attackers would have put rooneys chance away, and that's discounting the fact we had more real chances. Sure if Pirlos shot were lower it would be in, Hart was confounded, but still, it didn't. Like I said before, we had more, and better chances, but didn't put them away. Italy had fewer chances but had a higher conversion rate. I really don't think either team deserved to win, it's easy to put that down to bias but that's my genuine opinion.

Semi bad.cohesion. There was one sturridge opportunity that exemplifies that where he literally would've been on target had he been a foot or two ahead of where he was. It's not an unsolvable problem, the fact we are making these chances is fantastic and more than we've had going forward in years. I am optimistic for the next game.

Comparing them to the Dutch is pointless, the Dutch were absolutely fantastic. England weren't, but they certainly weren't bad. Good, I'd say. Not perfect obviously.

England as a sporting nation is characterised by a "disappointing success" insomuch that we are usually barely good enough even for the lowest rungs and inevitably fail once we come across a good team. When we face a shit team, we barely win. That's why we've only won once in a hundred years, and that was with men whose like is no longer with us today.

With that in mind, I predict 2-1 to England in the match.

We didn't expect us to get past the group stage, and we're still not out. That said, we shouldn't be in a position that our progression relies on others, which it does.

Going forward, we didn't create the chances. We know we can, we saw it the other day, but we didn't pull through. We have no reliable DMF and the defence is awful. I don't think Hodgson made the wrong choice with his selection, at least insofar as us losing the game, but A) we don't have the depth of young players we should have and B) we don't have enough quality in defence.

Woy could have done a considerably better job of it. The two man midfield has not worked, especially with no proper holding midfielder, and Liverpool figured out months ago they need a three man midfield because Gerrard + one other wasn't working and they still conceded a shitload; Tabarez has even said he put Cavani in the space Gerrard was meant to be covering because he knew he wouldn't do the job properly. Every other team has had at least three men in midfield. 4-3-3 should have been used instead of what was effectively 4-2-4.

Playing a front four like that was a luxury and they certainly didn't press or create enough. There was no real link between the midfield and the front four. Again, there was a lack of passion. What has Woy got right this World Cup? He's been out-thought by both managers.

It's also baseless - Garrincha was born with a bent spine and deformed legs, but that didn't stop him from being player of the tournament at the 62 World Cup and being regarded as one of the best dribblers of all time. Even in the modern age Messi had a growth hormone deficiency and Wilshere is said to have a mild form of Down's Syndrome. If you're good enough, you're good enough.

The advice in the final paragraph will only at best make people roll their eyes, and at worst have them looking at you like you're a mad person. And the fact that Silvia Murray Wakefield* is pulling up articles from 1999 is pretty weak sauce.

However, I think the idea that the footballing world is one of faux-macho dickswinging and therefore inherently exclusionary is a given, no? I honestly wouldn't think that if every football fan I met wasn't exactly those things.

*Feminism is currently, and sadly, the pursuit of middle class women who probably face 1/10th of the discrimination than that of working class women, which is why most feminist writing at the moment makes so many people vomit in disgust.

Yeah I agreee - I'm a bloke who isn't 'into foootie', but she just makes it into a whole men vs women thing and cherry picks a few random facts to justify an angry rant about men. The Guardian churn out loads of these kind of articles every week.

I just remembered a pretty funnny video I saw the other day of Laurie Penny getting humilated on stage.

If there was ever an argument for video refs in top-level football, that right there is it. It works well in every other sport that uses it. In rugby particularly the ref can call on the video if he thinks he may have missed something, and as of this past season the TMO can ping the ref if it looks like he's missed something.

If there's any justice over there, Uruguay will be disqualified and Italy put in their place. Godin should have been sent off against England and should not have been eligible to play against Italy, in which game Suarez should have been sent off. They'd have been down to 10 and without the player who actually scored. Standard forfeit is 3-0 unless the awarded team scored more,so Italy would be through on six points.

Suarez guilty. Nine internationals, plus four months out of the sport. He'll miss the rest of the tournament, and possibly the whole of the Copa America and the start of their qualification for 2018 depending on how well they do. He will. Uruguay are now in the second round, and will play at most four games in this competition (L16, QF, SF, final or 3/4). Their next competition is Copa America. Since CONMEBOL is so small, there is no qualifying, and they will play at least three and at most six games (they won the last one, but he was instrumental in that victory). If they get knocked out straight away here and don't make it out of the group next year, that's four competitive games. They need at least five friendlies to guarantee having him for any part of next year's competition.

That, pretty much, though it won't last through to the 2018 qualifiers because apparently there's a special centenary Copa America being played in 2016. I'm calling it now - AUF's appeal will fail, and conveniently they'll arrange some additional friendlies in order to "spend" his ban.

I wonder if someone will find something new for him to do in the meantime. A new challenge for him to get his teeth into, you might say.

IIRC, in one of Tim Vickery's articles from a few years back he said that in South America cheating is seen as a skill; being able to con the referee is viewed similar to being able to dribble past someone or play a killer pass. Suarez takes it to an extreme, but it works; if he didn't cheat against Ghana in the last World Cup then they wouldn't have made the semis and you can argue that this helped lead to the winner against Italy. His stamping on players and diving on a regular basis are probably the most shameful since this:

https://www.youtube.com/v/OiW0IPrv1Ro

It's not just South Americans, though, although we're not as good at it, as evidenced by Biscuits' notorious peekaboo against Inter.

Fuck me what a game. Belgium were a bit substandard, Hazard shouldve played in the middle and Fellini shouldve been taken off earlier, but Christ what a fight the US put up. The Americans seemed frightened to shoot, they had so many opportunities and didn't take many of them. They kept putting the ball in the air as well, when they were clearly at a disadvantage there, and played great ground balls. Yeldlin was excellent. Enyeama. I mainly know this from playing FM07 - it's always nice when players you sign on that have a decent career IRL; Andres Guardado was my first choice left winger, especially for starting with Juve in Serie B and getting Nedved to tutor him, and he's had an alright World Cup (Diego Calderon was second choice, but he's still playing in Ecuador). 31 fouls committed by Brazil, plus all the ones the ref let slide. They kicked the shit out of Colombia last night. Yepes' goal wasn't offside because it was Luiz who flicked it on. The free kick Luiz scored from was a good tackle and never a foul. Oh well, when Colombia joined in they managed to nobble Neymar so Brazil have only got themselves to blame. I hope Germany fuck them up; it's really hard to like this Brazil squad.

I know it isn't the team's fault, but I fucking hate the Brazilian crowd. And therefore the team.

I'm all for passionately cheering on your team, but braying like livestock every single time someone even breathes on a yellow-shirted player is fucking annoying. On top of the player's actual attempts to influence the ref, it just stacks so unfairly against other teams. I get that WC crowds are less educated than usual, but it's past the point of parody.

Oh yeah, and booing whenever the other team gets the ball - for no other reason than that they aren't your team - is just tragic. If they are playing boringly, or an individual is a twat, that's obviously fine.

I kind hate myself for saying it, but I hope Germany bores them to death with dull negative football, and knocks them out.

It's a pointless game designed to earn Fifa more money than the tournament might otherwise allow.

Rubbish. It's used to decide third place in the World Cup. It's no more 'pointless' than any other game in the tournament.

Maybe you should think a bit harder, then. The world cup is football's premier tournament, so a play-off between the two non-finalist sides lets you decide who came third and fourth in the tournament.

This isn't exactly brain surgery, lad.

What's the point? Theres not bronze medal, there's no way of determining who's fifth sixth etc. It's just another money spinner from Fifa, it has fuck all to do with who comes third.

It shouldn't, because there's no value. They don't determine who came fifth and sixth, do they.

Christ, it's a tournament, the winner is all that's important. There isn't a second place, a third place, a fourth place, just a winner. The only reason the play off exists is money.

That depends on whether you consider shortening the gap between the semis and the final to be purely a matter of money or not. The match also counts for ranking purposes, which is arguably not entirely about money.

The Fifa rankings operate independently of what game it is, a qualifying game has the same weight as the final. There's no purpose to it! None at all!

No, they're very dependent on what game it is. One of the factors in the weighting is "importance". Friendlies are 1, WC qualifiers are 2.5, WC proper is 4.
