The defence was poop, but nobody expected them to be anything except poop. Leighton Baines suffered because he had no cover in front of him thanks to Rooney/Sterling/Welbeck/whoever else was there because of the free flowing attacking midfield we played covering him. That was Italy's (successful) line of attack. Gerrard wasn't particularly noticeable, but he's playing DMF so that's not really surprising, similarly with Hendo. Sterling was great, though his crosses left something to be desired. Rooney was shit, and his golden opportunity could've left the game with an England draw or win. I really think he should be dropped. Sturridge was solid.

IIRC, in one of Tim Vickery's articles from a few years back he said that in South America cheating is seen as a skill; being able to con the referee is viewed similar to being able to dribble past someone or play a killer pass.
