What would happen if I used these garden loppers as bolt cutters, to trim some metallic rods (stays) off my bike mud guard?

I'm guessing it'd wreck the tool.

Will post pic of garden tool tomorrow.

I could hacksaw it but it's rather pathetic, it remains an option. As does drilling.

But do _not_ use the loppers to cut steel. It won't cut the steel, and you'll have an annoyingly damaged set of loppers. You'll certainly chip a chunk out of the blade, and may snap the anvil bit, and you can't get replacements anywhere. Fiskars = Bastards.
Seconding hacksaw or dremel. You'd need a pretty chunky set of wire cutters.

I've got SKS guards on my bike, unless it's completely blunt your hacksaw will do just fine. You only need to get about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through before they snap cleanly enough (the ends will be hidden in the retainer nipple anyway).

>>2648
If they are SKS guards, then they need to be trimmed roughly to size, roughly within 1/4".

2625 Getting ropes up trees
I've been doing a bit of hedge maintenance - chopping down the 25 feet or so that's grown out of the top of my 8 foot hedge. Managed 40 foot or so today, got about the same again to do next weekend - the overhead power line in the pic stopped play, as the wind wants to push the trees that way, and next door will be miffed if I cut their power.
So - how can I get a rope high up in the tree, so I can pull it in the right direction when it falls? (cutting a wedge into the tree does fuck all, if there's wind).
I've tried lobbing a weighted line up, but can't get through the branches, got to love leylandii. Is there some kind of stick contraption that will let me lock a rope around the tree and tie it off? I need to get the line higher than I can reach from the top of the ladder, probably aout 25-30 feet to be confident that the tree's coming down where I want (they're quite heavy, and have quite a lot of wind loading).

You'll stop the leak, but you'll also lose the ability to easily bleed the radiator. You can buy a replacement bleed valve for about £2. They're not hard to fit.

Odds on, it's just a bit of grot stuck in the valve. Arm yourself with a couple of cotton buds and a bit of kitchen roll - whip the screw out, scrub its pointy end with the kitchen roll. Wipe the mating surface inside the rad with a cotton bud.

2601 CFLs
Right then. The ceiling lights above me are these weird fittings for expensive lamps. I want to replace them with LED lamps. I'm familiar with the socket from butterfly CFLs (like you'd fit in the ceiling of a toilet) but haven't seen them like this before, and half the lamps I find online are for horizontal fittings rather than vertical (so light coming out of the side rather than beaming down). I've drawn a blank on plug-and-play LED replacements, but that'd save me a lot of hassle if they exist - it's a G24q-2, I'm after 8W actual or so at around 3000K.

Failing that, is the ballast for these contained in the fitting shown in the image, or is it really going to be sealed in the ceiling? I've had the ceiling rose off to check and there's nothing accessible.

Cheers sparklads.

If there are only two wires in that cable from the rose to the holder, the ballast's in the holder and you just need to replace it with something simple.

2591 Decent screwdriver set
I know we've got some skilled techies and DIY folks here, I'd appreciate some advice on this one.

I have been through literally hundreds of mini screwdrivers over the years. Some last for ages and some are junk from the get go. Irritatingly some of the ones I've spent a little extra on are the same old shit, maybe in a tarted up case. I don't want this. I don't mind paying a fair bit of cash to avoid it. Not hundreds, but well into the double digits.

Same question aimed at regular screwdrivers too, if anyone has any input.

Wiha or Wera. Made in Germany, top quality, they'll last you forever. Xiaomi sell a set of Wiha-made driver bits that's currently on sale for a ludicrous price, which is ideal for use with a power handle like the Wowstick or the ES121. I also have a Wera Kraftform Micro set for deeply recessed screws.

The motor only does about 3nM, so it'll struggle with anything that you'd need a full-size screwdriver for. The clutch mechanism means you can just use it as a manual screwdriver for the first/last half a turn. It's an absolute godsend for phone or laptop repair where you're dealing with dozens of tiny screws, but it's not an essential tool by any means and I wouldn't bother if you don't do a lot of that sort of thing.

This is what I was concerned about, but that sounds like a good solution. I spend a lot of time inside computers of one kind or another so it'll probably be a good investment.

You'll want a mole wrench, or if it's too big even for that, a chain wrench.

If you can find it, there's a drain cleaner called One Shot which is 90% sulphuric acid. I wouldn't be surprised if it's been taken off the market in certain places, what with all the acid attacks - if you get this on your skin you will be seriously hurt. It will likely get rid of your bathroom blockage, but you need to be very sure that your drains are PVC/ABS plastic as it will eat metal. Don't get any of it outside the sink as it'll rip the surface off ceramics as well as metal. Don't go plunging directly afterwards or you risk getting a melted face.

Even with that stuff, you'll likely find exactly the problem you've described: after a month the blockage will come back. The fact of the matter is that nothing in a bottle will ever compare to a professional drain cleaner with a rooter. Don't go with your regular plumber, go with the specialists.

1A fuses are hold to get hold of in the size that will fit in a plug. Most of the 1A fuses you'll find for sale will be a smaller fitting that's usually used for shaver sockets.

3A is fine. It's there to protect the wiring not the bulb itself, and you almost certainly don't have 1A wires unless you've bought some dodgy lights off a chinese ebay seller.

When you say that plastic thingy is impossible to remove, it's probably just pushed on and can be pulled off with a bit of levering between it and the motor.
If that's too hard, and you don't need it off in one piece, then fire is, as always, the answer. Or at least heat - soften it with a hot hairdryer or paint stripper, then pull it off.

I've just fucked up my front door. UPVC jobbie, and it had fallen to the point that it no longer locked. No more adjustment, so I took the arrowed bit off (2 screws), filed it down a bit so it fits in the hole it should (which then enables all the claw locking gubbins).
Screwed it back in, door shut fine and it scnicked into place. Yay.
Fucking door won't fucking open now. The key moves the latch a bit but clearly not enough.
Fuckety-fuck, wat do. Also, how on earth can this happen? I'm assuming I didn't screw it in far enough, so it sticks out a little further than it did. Very hard to get tools into the gap to poke it in a bit, poxy security...
