Teenlad, those are not burlesque dancers. This is why they can't dance, but charge you 40 quid for a hand job.

If women want to ironically get naked and do a sexy dance, as some sort of body positive empowerment thing, I'm all for it. As long as I can watch.

I think it just goes to show the term has become so widely used and applied that it's become meaningless, in much the same way as hipster has.

I do find it interesting that burlesque is largely promoted and practised by fisherperson types. It seems like for them, it's only objectification, or oppression, or whatever, if they decide it is. Waving your tits around in a burlesque show for money is completely different to waving your tits around in a strip club for money, apparently.

Anyway, this dichotomy gives me an immense stonk on. Smash the patriarchy while I wank to Dita Von Teese videos.

Burlesque is classy innit. Also there's usually a whole bunch of women in the audience. Women looking at naked women is just good fun, men looking at naked women is oppression obviously.

Also in Burlesque shows the performers nipples are usually covered with tassels or something, meaning they aren't properly naked like wot strippers are.

That may be the case, but pole dancing is gymnastics which requires high levels of body control and physical fitness, one could argue it is the ballet of our generation. One should not, however, because it's just women dancing around a ten-foot metal cock.

http://mancunion.com/2013/11/25/swansea-university-pole-fitness-society-re-instated/

They reinstated it after the SU realised they were pissing off students. It was just some people in the SU with an agenda to push, student government is full of wankers anyway.

Ha! What? People getting drunk and horny on a weekend is a serious problem now? Unless you have serious liver issues and a totally smooth crotch region then you really ought to calm down.

Shouldn't those people be organising charity events or something else worthwhile? I've no real experience with student unions so could someone tell me what they're supposed to be doing?

Somehow I doubt they'll ever actually introduce it as a discipline. Getting the gymnastics world to acknowledge a new apparatus when they throw a shitfit over even touching the asymmetric bars with the feet is an exercise in futility.

Supporting students when they need help, facilitating the functioning of student societies and the like, giving help when there's contention between the student and the university, that sort of thing.

Instead they spend their time complaining about the patriarchy, installing toilets for tortoises and throwing things at banks.

Mark Kermode summed it up well, saying burlesque is "stripping with A-levels".

I don't mind burlesque, I quite like the variety of women compared to normal stripping. A lot more alternative girls, and a lot more big lasses, both of which are nice.

Not a fan of the hypocrisy surrounding it though. Sometimes the same person will claim burlesque is empowering women, while stripping is degrading. One involves an unconventionally attractive woman in lacey clothes stripping for an audience of pretentious men and women while music from the early 20th century plays. The other involves a conventionally mediocre woman in shiny clothes stripping for an audience of depressed men while R&B plays. They're pretty much the same thing.
