I don't mind posts that start with "this" or "that", it's just a shorthand indicator that the referenced post agreed with and forms the starting point for the following post. Is there some reason it gets on your tits, OP?

It's alright as long as you then elaborate/contribute to the thought.

Posts just containing the one word are fucking infuriatingly stupid, however.

Agreeing with the OP. It's quite blunt and unimaginative, and makes the boards come off a bit repetitive. I'd prefer to say "I agree" or "good point" or "this poster raises a valid perspective that I will take as a foundation when expounding my own view".

Alright, not really the last one, but it does have a worse effect than just getting tiresome to see. It's one of those little ticks that removes nuance from discussion. >>14481 is spot on, it's very much our 'like'/'upvote' button.

Perhaps because sometimes the way it comes across is as though it were saying 'If you hadn't beaten me to it that is exactly what I would have posted, so please rest assured that I am just as smart and well-informed as you'. And that's just childish.

I just see it as a democratic way of showing support for an opinion and to lessen the notion that it's just one nutjob going on a mad one.

I'm fine with "this", I think it has become a well-understood shorthand for "I broadly concur with this point and would like to expand upon it or refine it.". I think that it's a bit GCSEish to insist on a range of synonyms just for the sake of variety. Brevity and clarity are far more laudable traits than loquaciousness. Nobody in mathematics complains about the use of "QED" as the conclusion to a proof, it's just a very concise way of saying something that often needs to be said.

Being verbose is even worse.

"This" is fine as long as it isn't a one word reply, although sometimes the context will allow room to stretch that a bit. If someone was to resoundingly massacre a troll with a 3 paragraph long literary do-in, there isn't much to add other than "bravo" or variations of "mirth audible" which could very well be inappropriate.
