The last thread ate all of my ram and crashed my browser when I tried to open it, so here is a new thread.

Sorry for the tangent but I wonder if the people in the tower block were thinking

>Stop trying to look "urban" you berk, you're plainly not from here

because that's what I think when people film outside of mine semi-regularly.

I'm glad they are still putting videos up for this album because it really is a work of art that holds a mirror up to different modern societies. Žižek did a good introduction to the bands underlying philosophy before the performance they did in North Korea where he points out that it is not just tongue and cheek but really lifts off the mask that hides totalitarianism:

The description is perfect for creating the mood of the song:
>The first time I heard this song I was on a balcony while a typhoon was coming into town and a potted plant fell off and smashed in the courtyard four stories below my feet. I smoked a cigarette which lasted the exact length of this song, and as the rain came in I felt at peace with the weather.

A lot of people don't realise that the English folk tradition and the American blues tradition are intimately linked. Sea shanties are actually of African origin - British and Irish sailors learned the work songs of freed slaves when working the transatlantic trade routes in the early 19th century. Many blues songs are based on traditional songs of the British Isles.

The connection is often difficult to recognise, but once in a while you hear it in vivid technicolour.

Heard this in a pub in Manchester a few years ago, and every now and again it pops into my head. It makes me feel like I'm trapped in a vaporwave-style universe where the 90s never ended.

The piece by this band that most fits that idea, however, is this:

Heavy pressure is weighing on me.
I push it aside lightly with a flip.
Pushed to the ground with pressure.
I kick myself up high with a flip.

Pressure that's painting everything blue.
I slip through easily with a flip.
Being cut with cruel pressure.
Be strong and laugh it off with a flip.

A popping cracker/firework,
A spinning record,
A strumming guitar,
Step on the flanger,
An echoing speaker,
A sounding heater,
Don’t let the flanger stop,
Let’s get excited and do a flip.

Local slang for shooting up. When Leith Central was abandoned in the 80s, scagheads would go there for a fix.

Also, like drug use, it makes no sense to outsiders.

The novel has a chapter named "Trainspotting at Leith Central Station" which has this bit.

>We go fir a pish in the auld Central Station at the Fit ay the Walk, now a barren, desolate hangar, which is soon tae be demolished and replaced by a supermarket and swimming centre. Somehow, that makes us sad, even though ah wis eywis too young tae mind ay trains ever being there.

>- Some size ay a station this wis. Git a train tae anywhair fae here, at one time, or so they sais, ah sais, watchin ma steaming pish splash oantae the cauld stane.

>- If it still hud fuckin trains, ah'd be oan one oot ay this fuckin dive, Begbie said. It wis uncharacteristic for him tae talk aboot Leith in that way. He tended tae romanticise the place.

>An auld drunkard, whom Begbie had been looking at, lurched up tae us, wine boatil in his hand. Loads ay them used this place tae bevvy and crash in.

>- What yis up tae lads? Trainspottin, eh? He sais, laughing uncontrollably at his ain fuckin wit.

>- Aye. That's right, Begbie sais. Then under his breath: Fuckin auld cunt.

>- Ah well, ah'll leave yis tae it. Keep up the trainspottin mind! He staggered oaf, his rasping, drunkard's cackles filling the desolate barn. Ah noticed that Begbie seemed strangely subdued and uncomfortable. He wis turned away fae us.

>It wis only then ah realised thit the auld wino wis Begbie's faither.

Scots has always looked like that. You only thought it a 'bold prose style' because Standard English has historically been the revered and promoted style. Similar situation with Welsh.

Scots was largely mutually unintelligible with English until the early 20th century. Scots speakers might have been able to communicate with English speakers, but only with considerable effort. An English speaker eavesdropping on a conversation in Scots would only understand small fragments. Even today, the Scots spoken by older rural people is about as remote from standard English as Ukrainian is from Russian - mostly mutually intelligible, but with some major differences in grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary.

I think this recording illustrates the point quite well.

I don't think that is a fair example and a 'true translation', in that it sounds like an adaptation of The King James Bible which isn't modern English in the first place and has more than enough quirks that if you were deceptive you could conceal as the ' major differences in grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary' of Scots.

>Can't take Bergman's Death seriously though.

I think symbolically it works because it doesn't. Bergman's Death remains otherworldly but is humanised and appears rational to a degree where we can understand and relate with it, a good example being in Bill and Ted.

You could by all means do a better job representing death as more of a force of nature (like Anton Chigurh) but it loses a certain mortal comprehension that gives it personality.

Normally I wait until after my birthday but I'm calling Christmas early. This album has become an annual tradition for me over the years and I'm sure I've posted here it more than once.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQK_Wff5aKc

It sounds like the record a tiki bar would put on over Christmas. Tinsel wrapped around those wooden statues, fake snow everywhere and the staff are dressed like its the middle of summer -aside from the hats.

Fuck that first video is depressing. Pretty good ep though, I didn't expect it to be the work of Filthy Frank.

I've been listening to a lot of Alfa Mist lately. He's at the intersection of jazz and spoken word and it gives his albums a unique feel to them and something that is surprisingly ideal to have on as you go about your day:

I unironically enjoy Bill Wurtz's (Wurtz'?) music. Behind the silly lyrics and confusing videos, a lot of it is so complex. "I wanna be a movie star", for example, is constructed as 3 bars of 9/4, followed by one bar of 13/4 in the verses.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMp55KH_3wo

That whole vibe never fails to get me in a good mood. Much of Latino pop just has that positivity and lust for life which seems quite unique to the Hispanic and Latin American world.

You wouldn't see many people dancing in the streeets like that here in Britain. Well, outside of carnivals anyway. And without bystanders rolling their eyes and writing angry letters to the council the next day for allowing that sort of thing to happen.

This is the kind of music that they often played at the Turnmills in Islington, where I spent countless nights between my 18th birthday and my early 20s.

Also, note that during the whole song "Connected", the bass only ever plays the same note.

I'm really into Gente de Zona at the moment. They're a Cuban reggaeton band which blends in traditional Latin and Cuban elements. So much so that they call their music "cubaton".

They're pretty hot right now in the music business, both within Latin and "regular" pop. Many well-known artists have recently recorded songs with them.

It's also the fact he said he'd throw her out of the band if she didn't have sex with him, so the band and music were tools to manipulate her, and she was trying to drop hints through the lyrics. That makes it far weirder to listen to than Sonny and Cher or Ike and Tina Turner, not that I listened to the latter two duos much.

Yep. I don't think anything will ever match the first hit of all of those potent brain chemicals in your formative years. The first time it's a surprise, any time after that you understand it a little bit more and are that much more used to it, much like chasing any other high.

Of course there's more to a relationship to teenage giddiness. I can't imagine my first girlfriend and I making it in the long run, I've learned too much since then that I simply wouldn't have if I was still with my Year 10 girlfriend.

They also had a similar reaction to this.

Huh, never seen the ad in my life. Maybe it's a repressed memory from having to deal with HP printers.

Penguin Cafe Orchestra gets used on quite a lot of ads I think. I love their stuff but you do often hear it cropping up in all sorts of stuff.

Randomly came across this on YT yest, I think from some twat talking about music from the so good, it's bad class. Surprisingly refreshing once you've had a few listens to familiarise yourself with the terrain.

Everything about this is mesmerising. Billy Preston absolutely murdering that organ, turtleneck and chain dude, the incredibly stern-faced woman in the "Crack a Bible - Get High On Jesus" sweatshirt who has undoubtedly Seen Some Shit, Ralph H Goodpasteur's magnificent marple tracksuit, the guy at the back who looks like Tupac in witness protection, the sequinned jean jacket. It's too much.

I wish there was an edit of this where it was all the cowboy-themed operatic rapping bits like from 1:22.
