Not been following this thread, but give this one a quick listen because you piqued my interest and I have to say this reminds me so much of Placebo, particularly his voice.

It's like if Brian Molko was a bit less jaded then this is what he (they'd) sound like.

Thanks for sharing, I did enjoy this one and I usually can't stand these kind of threads because nobody really cares what anybody else pots, they just post their own and hope somebody else listens.

That song of his always reminded me of a Nirvana tune. He does Kurt really well, and before he was even born...

This song on the other hand, I think is one of the best Jazz standards of the last century. I feel like I'm in an alternative universe, and in the real one Manson is a massively successful performer.

I don't know what it is about that video in particular, but I find the 80s revival crap vacuous and obnoxious, more so then usual, and to the level of offensive. I think it might be the gorilla costume, and that the poster has assigned a deeper meaning to the song that is entirely undermined by practically every creative choices of the video. The fact that the song doesn't start until 20% into the video ads to the obnoxiousness.

Steady on, we're British.

And, some of my favourite picks from the comments.
>The USA like France and the UK is controlled by jews. Their agenda is diversity and wars.

>Sure, make fun of us. Very well. As a former US military service member, I will be more than willing to come and defend the liberty of France as my forefathers did before. Viva La France

>This song and video is some of the most ignorant shit I have seen. If these girls can't see the difference between real white American culture and the picture of it which American and European Jews want you to believe in, then you aren't very smart. So many real Americans hate the fact that these Hebrew fucktards have pushed this view of American culture in Europe for so long. You are very ignorant using the Stetson hats, also insulting our flag and calling us "Johnny" etc. You should instead be pointing out the TRUTH that this view of Americans is one that the Jewish leftists want Europe to believe about us. You should be embracing your American brothers and sisters who share your hatred for Jewish leftism and your concerns at the erasure of white culture in America and Europe by the hordes of Islamic invaders and the powerful Jews who open the gates for them to flood into our lands. Instead you use stereotypes to insult us. Whose side are you on? We are ethnic and cultural brothers and sisters facing the same enemy. Work with us. Don't insult us.

I reckon I only got into Bent around the release of Intercept! from a long defunct album sharing blog and then lost interest after a couple of months while I got caught up with life before today. What is the /beat/ opinion of the duo?

Its strange but from what I remember nobody I showed them to really seemed into it which I guess was always typical of trip-hop.

I wish they hadn't put the /pol/ tier post at the start, as the song and lyrics are fine without it.

I know its Haydn but there is something about this version in particular and the memories from playing Civilization that bring out the best in me. Last week I did some writing to this track and honestly its the best work I've ever done.

She has been releasing singles off her album for well over a year now (more like 2) and has yet to do a video for a single one of my favourites. Seriously what in the fuck is she doing to me, I'm getting anxious that people will never hear tracks like 'How you get the Girl' or 'New Romantics' and recognize that 1989 was the greatest pop album of all time that revolutionized the industry forever.

I liked the part of the video with her cleavage
Please buy her album so she doesn't stop releasing videos

No she is a talented country singer who made an electro-pop album that blew everything else in the genre out the water because she knows what she is doing.

The internet just hates her because she is a popular 20 something musician and boys feel insecure about pop music. Try her album and see if you don't like it.

I've been listening to a lot of this music for the last year or two and I'm still perplexed. It seems to be built mostly around Japanese funk. If you're interested, you can go to AM Discs and they have a lot of free music there; some less sampled things too. While it's all pretty feel good and upbeat, you do get occasional spanners in the works like this album, which is beautiful to listen to. I quite enjoy SUPERSEX420 though, their album was on AM Discs a while back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9L4q-0Pi4E

I was looking for places to go and listen to this in the UK, but it seems lacking here. Things like funk, house, and northern soul, have been enjoying a revival for sometime and I think this a reaction to that. One of the reviews for the Macintosh Plus album essentially says "People like this because they haven't heard what it references." and in all honesty, I think the talent in this styles lies in doing as little as possible.

I tried making it with K-pop, Kyle, and Zapp & Roger samples. I feel like when I was in school and would always get knock-off copies of what everyone else had for about 2 weeks.

This is hands-down one of Kylie's best songs ever.

Kind of pervy, that black vinyl bodysuit... quite a departure from the clean-cut bobbysoxy stuff she did with Stock/Aitken/Waterman.

IIRC, this was while she was dating Michael Hutchence, who once said in an interview that one of his favourite pastimes was "corrupting Kylie".

>Hearing this galvanised my whole D&B revival kick.
I've been making music again recently after a bit of a hiatus. It seems everything I do electronically these days comes out sounding like The Orb/Orbital or drum and bass.

I remember messing with electronic stuff years ago, and I would try jumping on whatever bandwagon was going at the time. Of course the result for that was by the time you get anything to sound good the world has moved on. Also it doesn't feel very good, integrity-wise. I had my grunge guitar bands for integrity though.

Anyway, now I just make whatever the hell comes out and I'm far happier with it. I don't know if there's much of a crowd for DnB these days but it seems to be what I find the most fun so I'll keep making it.

For those moments spent sitting alone in a hotel room, wearing a t-shirt and underpants, with nothing but a cold, half-eaten pizza in a box on the floor for company.

Which is what's happening at the moment. Whinge for /emo/

>Have you been buying some old drum machines off ebay lad?
It's done in Reason, and some of the beats are made by sticking four beat samples in then chopping them up so you get a kick, snare, hat etc and making my own beat from that. That might be what you're hearing.

>Bit of a vintage sound. Mix is a bit muddy, feel the snares/hihats could do with a bit more sparkle.

Noted, cheers.

Mixing is a bit of a funny affair for me, I basically have three mixes I do. One on the studio type monitors, one on the headphones, and one on the mrs shitty laptop speakers (for "radio edit" purposes). I usually end up doing something that kind of fits all of them as an end product. Maybe I should be sticking more to the speakers mix for youtube.

The mix is mostly OK in terms of balance, although the snare and hats could do with being a touch louder. The kick and bass are taking up too much room in the low mids, which is the main cause of the muddiness. I'd suggest fairly aggressive lowpass EQ and less reverb. If you want to keep the sense of space but recover some clarity, try using gated reverb.

Sidechaining the bass and kick is always sensible in this style of music, because it adds a lot of punch and clarity in the low end. You also might want to try layering a sub-kick with a very short attack and decay. The snare could do with a bit more bite - maybe trim the sample shorter and apply some distortion.

Otherwise, good work. The arrangement has a good sense of progression and a nice amount of variety.

I am a bit of a reverb whore. That's probably the biggest culprit where muddiness is concerned. Top advice to gate it.

What do you mean by sidechaining, do you mean assigning them to the same mixer group, or just synchronising them? If the latter I know what you mean, I've played bass in bands before and I always used to build my basslines around what the drummer was doing with the kick drum.

Sidechaining is a compression technique. You run one track through a compressor, with another track controlling the amount compression. Using sidechain, you can briefly reduce the volume of your bass sound every time the kick drum plays. This massively improves clarity in the low end and makes the kick sound much louder.

Sidechain compression used in almost all modern dance records to a greater or lesser degree. Very aggressive sidechain compression creates that pumping sound you hear in house music. Sidechain compression is most commonly used on the kick drum and bass, but it's a really useful tool whenever you have two sounds competing for the same range of frequencies.

Here's a tutorial for sidechaining in Reason.

>We're essentially generating an envelope that is formed by the amplitude envelope of a kick-drum sample
Yep, exactly what I was expecting. I love how Reason you can actually get to play with the wires as though it was all real kit. It made moving from using real instruments to virtual so much easier for me. Any guitarist who has ever used a mixing desk and a pedal board already knows how it all plugs in.

I'm not sure he wrote anything for the game specifically, but he did work with them a bit from what I can tell, as they have some custom sound engine that mixes the tracks based on events. It's quite well done, as you progress through the puzzle, more parts kick in.

I usually just google reviews for new albums and find review sites that way. From there, if they've a community page or forum, you can probably find links to other sites.

I don't often actually read music reviews though, I just find sites that share my tastes and listen to what appears on their pages. The Quietus is a good one (for me).

Also, no joke, 4chan's /mu/ is great at collecting current new music/upcoming trends/internet subcultures.

Peep through the door
It seems as though the grass was much greener before
The dead life has been washed upon the sea shore
Money and greed deluded what is truly pure
And yet our flesh keeps screeching out for more

Now you’re trapped
A hole in the ozone about to make the world collapse
Pollution fills the air and minds with bullet twisted facts
Midnight is now upon us people righteous laws are coming back
Don’t turn your head away cause you can’t get away
Your mind is lost because your spirit has been led astray
Don’t ever say you gave it all if you ain’t gave it all
Just fade it in the hazy purple twilight
No more time I tried to warn you all it’s now approaching midnight

Panic’s in the air
Some jumping out of buildings others on their knees in prayer
Some cry out to the sky and yell they aren’t quite prepared
You looked god in the face and said forgive me all he did was stare.

Now you can run,
But where you gonna hide from all the power of the sun?
The cosmic reprecussions of what human kind has done
No understanding of the fullness everything is simply one
Soon to be none again so that new life can come again
Illusions rule the mind your soul is never gonna end
So don’t pretend you gave it all if you ain’t gave it all
Just fade it in the hazy purple twilight
No more time I tried to warn you all it’s now approaching midnight

So I bid farewell.
No more good times or bad times, no more heaven no more hell.
Now brace yourself for impact it’s a half hour to twelve
Complete in total darkness empty space is where you’re left to dwell.
And all you had to do was live today for your tomorrow
But now it’s over and you’re drowning deep inside your sorrow
You could’ve led but instead you confirmed and chose to follow

So once again I bid farewell
There’s only seconds left you’d like to second guess
But through your foolish ways you’ve literally beckoned death
So just don’t say you gave it all if you ain’t gave it all
Just fade it in the hazy purple twilight
No more time I tried to warn you all it’s now approaching midnight

Anybody else have a thing for old synth/instrumental music?

I really like Jan Hammer's old stuff. Especially what he did for Miami Vice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3YIz84thzY

He really did some great things on his Fairlight. Too many composers back in the day made the Fairlight sound like it was playing second-rate porn flick background music, but Jan Hammer's distinctive style of electronic music was just in a class of its own.

Crockett's Theme might be cliche anyone else remember the Natwest adverts?, but it's also one of the most gorgeous pieces of electronic music ever recorded.

Art of Noise did heartbreakingly lovely things with the Fairlight, along with some naff rubbish. Moments in Love certainly falls into the first camp.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfkJ53S2x-w

The lads at Nord Keyboards did a brilliant Spotify playlist of records made with the Fairlight:

https://play.spotify.com/user/thenordcrew/playlist/2IrF7beKwQJsEelmP568c8

Hats by The Blue Nile is worth a mention as the absolute pinnacle of '80s synth and recording technology. It's still widely used as a test CD by audiophiles and engineers. It has a crystalline clarity that is deeply unfashionable today, but sounds fabulous.

The more daft things by Art of Noise include "Paranoimia", with Matt Frewer as Max Headroom. Which also featured the Fairlight, with which (I assume) they did all the "stuttering". Although Fairlights were only capable of half-second samples, which would kind of rule out the manipulation of longer spoken sentences.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6epzmRZk6UU

I like Matt Frewer and Max Headroom was occasionally fun to watch, but "Paranoimia" was a bit too silly for my liking.

The Terminator 2 theme by Brad Fiedel was also pretty good, another example of good use of a Fairlight.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XblVVbqIHU

But it also marked the gradual end of the Fairlight's widespread use in film scoring and pop music. By the early 1990s, other electronic systems became more affordable and more practical, for example Atari Notator and later Logic Pro on Apple computers. Erasure did most of their early 90s songs on Notator, although Vince Clarke had owned a Fairlight in the mid-80s. Even the Pet Shop Boys retired their Fairlight at that time, with which they had recored memorable songs such as "Opportunities" or "It's a Sin".

I'd like to own a Fairlight, but at over £10,000 for a machine in good nick, that's a bit pricey just to pursue a hobby. Not even my car is worth that much. Fairlights that were owned by renowned musicians are even more expensive. Yello sold their Fairlight a couple of years ago, and I think it fetched somewhere around £13,000.

> Although Fairlights were only capable of half-second samples, which would kind of rule out the manipulation of longer spoken sentences.

The CMI I and II could hold two seconds per sample if you set the sample rate to 8khz, and had eight independent sample voices. The first E-mu Emulator had a single two-second sample memory. You could do a lot with two seconds, but it's painstaking work.

Paranoimia was released in 1986; the Akai S900 was released earlier that year, so it's plausible that Art of Noise had access to one. They definitely had one for their 1986 tour. That unit had a whopping 63 seconds of sample memory at 7.5khz.

I've been listening to a lot of drum and/or bass recently. Specifically, the dark, tech side of it. Some would call it neuro.

Best one I've heard from Noisia in a long time:

https://soundcloud.com/dubplatodnbcuts/noisia-prolix-asteroids-vip

This mix is good, in fact this guys whole channel is full of reposts of unreleased dubs from DnB artists page, it's worth following:
https://soundcloud.com/dubplatomysterious/dubplatodnb-mix-october-2015

And here's another mix, slightly more aggressive than the previous one:

That Poppy but I'm not so much interested in her music career as I am the youtube project she is involved with.

Music:

The side project seems to take from ASMR but is twisted and unsettling. At the same time incredibly engrossing. Anyone able to explain what is going on?

Anyone care to guess how they got the sound for the drums. The album is a fusion of Japanese and Armenian sounds for the most part but also draws elements from further afield.

Also the whole album is a masterpiece.

There is something so wonderfully mundane yet upbeat about this song that we've lost since the 1980s. The world needs more strange men with keyboards.

Bandcamp, plus all the gear getting really cheap. It costs almost nothing to set up a half decent bedroom studio, so anyone can have a go at making a record. You're not limited by the gear you have access to, you don't have to scrimp and save to achieve a particular sound, you just download some plugins and get on with it.

See this is how a mashup should work. Often its just the vocals put over the beat of another track but I appreciate the effort made to disassemble the two tracks and put them back together with totally new recording.
