I don't get into conspiracies. Obviously I believe the bridge collapsed and it wasn't planned but this video strikes me as odd. Why would you film yourself randomly driving across a bridge and your kid asks the time and you answer extremely specifically? If someone falsified evidence in this manner you'd think "C'mooon, could you lay it on any thicker?" or it would seem extremely contrived if a script-writer came up with it.

I guess the fact he said "11.40" (if the translation's correct) implies he read it off something digital and I don't know if you would do that and round it (from 11:42 or something) in the way you would say "twenty to twelve" after reading an analogue clock saying 18 minutes to.

He's in the passenger seat. It's absolutely pissing it down and that's why he is filming it for social media (as evidenced by the obnoxious superimposed Garfield graphic). His kid is bored of driving in the rain because it's the summer holiday and he wants to get wherever they're going so he can get as much Fortnite or whatever in as possible before bedtime. None of this is beyond plausible.

Did he even get the time right? The bridge collapsed at 11:30, so how is this 'ten minutes before'?

Don't quite understand what you're getting at lad?

It's some sort of conspiracy because the bloke was overly specific about the time?

I don't think I said "ten minutes before" anywhere and neither did the link. I just mean it seems odd you can convey the fact you were at a specific place minutes before something historical happening because you have a video of yourself there stating the time.

It's like making a video on 9/11 saying "Well, here I am randomly filming myself outside the twin towers at 8:36am." I mean if you were a scriptwriter thinking "How can I convey the fact the character was there at that time", it would seem a little on the nose to do it just like that and I'm sure lots of tourists have taken photos or videos of the twin towers, more so than that bridge.

If such a 9/11 video surfaced it would instantly look fake or feed into conspiracy theories because it seems so contrived.

http://www.sportingnews.com/ca/soccer/news/criscito-i-was-on-genoa-bridge-shortly-before-collapse/1k40saylna3j41puya57bx6z1g

>Italy defender Domenico Criscito says he crossed the Ponte Morandi Bridge in Genoa 10 minutes before it collapsed, with dozens of people feared to have died.

>"I'm writing this message for all of those writing me worried about me and my family: we are all well, even if we crossed that bridge exactly 10 minutes before it collapsed," Criscito posted on Instagram.

The bridge collapsed at "about 11.30" so is his clock 20 minutes wrong or is 11.50 "about 11.30"? I don't use smartphones so would he be reading the time off the same phone he was filming with or would the camera view obscure the time? The phone would get its time from the network wouldn't it? so it seems unlikely it was so wrong.

The Daily Mail credited the video to https://www.instagram.com/domenicocriscito8691/?hl=en but I don't see it there now, nor the message the news said he posted after. I'd be wondering if that wasn't a video from some other time but it seems strange a professional footballer would seek to go viral in such an odd way.

What are the odds you would cross a bridge "ten minutes before" it collapsed while stating a time that was ten minutes after? I wonder if he didn't delete the instagram video because people called him out on it.

Italianlad here.

Translation is correct. He's also speaking simply and slowly, like you would speak to a nagging child.

This is a typical "announced tragedy" in Italy. During the '60 and '70 Italy built a lot of big infrastructure. The construction was mismanaged and marred by corruption. Those big projects suffer from fatal flaws and lack of maintenance, nearly all of them are crumbling and unsafe. Logic would dictate to raze them over and build something to replace them, but logic was never a strong point for Italian gov't. No conspiracy stuff, but no Italian is surprised by what happened. I saw that bridge, and I wonder how it lasted that long.

I caught myself and felt slightly racist when I rolled my eyes and thought "no wonder..." when seeing it on the news, so thanks for vindicating my prejudice. They seem to be acting like it's the Italian Grenfell or something, when really it's not hard to imagine the thing just being lazily and poorly built in the first place.

I was wondering what distinction they were making too, something being built badly in the first place versus something being built adequately then being coated in a flammable substance people thought was somehow safe?

There are parallels.

Both Grenfell and the Morandi bridge have had years of documented complaints about the safety of the structures, which were repeatedly ignored by the authorities, before finally being proved right by tragedy.

What if there was a murder and someone had an alibi because there was a video of them somewhere else stating the time and there would be no time for them to get to the scene of crime quickly enough. THAT would seem like bullshit wouldn't it?

I was wondering if maybe he'd crossed the bridge very recently but said "ten minutes before" because it sounded more dramatic and provided a video he had from some other time saying "11.40" but screwed up because the bridge went down at 11.30 and that's why he had to delete the Instagram posts.

I just mean I probably shouldn't have posted it on the conspiracy board but saw the video and was trying to figure out why it smelt of bullshit when the event had obviously occurred and without planning. I wondered if anyone else would agree about the video, or convince me otherwise, because a highly suspect looking (to me) video, which was nonetheless legitimate, would have been interesting in itself.
