How do you explain this then, huh?
No, really, how does space travel work. Retro thrusters and shit, not just momentum. Yes I am dumb.

A rocket is pushing against its own exhaust.

Think about the recoil of a gun - the bullet is being pushed forwards out of the barrel, which pushes the gun backwards with the same amount of force. The "bullet" fired from a rocket is just a big jet of flame, but that jet of flame is still made of matter and has mass. The force of the jet going backwards has to balance with the force of the rocket going forwards.

rockets are just throwing crap out the back of them the same way if you sit on a office chair and throw a ball hard it will push you the other way. it is pushing off of the stuff it just got rid of. the fact that rocket fuel expands helps. if you think about it logically 2 objects can't occupy the samespace so when something is expanding behind the rocket they have to push against each other till they both move out of each others way.

It is just momentum, it's that simple. The combustion in the chamber creates a high pressure, so the gasses are forced in the one direction they can go (backwards, towards the lower pressure) resulting in an equal and opposite push forwards for the rocket. And there is a considerable mass of gas pushed out the back per second, thus the alarming acceleration.
