I've just read the first few issues of Northlanders and it has nice artwork and an acceptable if completely witless plot. It starts in Viking occupied Orkney and apparently moves about a bit later.

You may be interested in in the 13th century Morgan Bible http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morgan_Bible . Apparently the original didn't have any words. It's pretty similar to a comic book, i'd say. See if you're a good citizen of Christendom and can work out what stories the pictures are illustrating.

The British Library do a facsimile of the Holkham Bible for £40 http://shop.bl.uk/mall/productpage.cfm/BritishLibrary/ISBN_9780712309905 http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/features/sacred/videoholkham.html and you can get facsimiles of William Blake's illuminated works fairly easily. In a couple of decades super high quality scans of all these works will be available free to anyone who wants them and the print on demand industry will have developed such that you will be able to get a nicely bound copy of any pre 20th century book you want for a reasonable price. I live in hope anyway.

Regarding the OP:

Age of bronze is a very good "historical" style comic book that offers a non-mythological telling of the Troyan war.

I doesn't have any nudge-nudge wink-wink breaking the fourth wall stuff, though and also doesn't go into detailed documentary mode about the tactics and technology.

If you can stomach the manga style you might also like Vinland Saga, which is about Vikings being awesome and fortunately lacks many of the annoying weeaboo things that japanese publications often suffer from.

Op, you might like to check out the barbarian fantasy, Sláine. Nothing historical here but it's a classic 2000ad staple where Pat Mills weaves our muscle bound, warp spazzing hero into a number of interesting celtic myths and legends. Generally it's good fun with Slaine wondering around Europe bashing bad guys and banging bitches, but Mills can seamlessly change pace and spin out a gut wrenching tale.
I think most of the better stories are available in tpb. Though beware, there's been quite a few dodgy artists over it's long course (especially in the beginning and the current crop of digital/photoshop BASTARDS at 2000ad make me fucking rage) so I'd suggest a try before buy policy. Personally if the art doesn't click with me, I find it a slog to get through.
Saying that, you've got excellent contributions from Glenn Fabry and Simon "THE MAN" Bisley who was made for illustrating Slaine (and Dredd) to be getting on with.

Best I could offer's stuff from the Early Modern Era, like The Seven Lifes of the Falcon or even later stuff like The Passengers with the Wind

But if you're looking for a side of mary sue characters killing everyone else, you'd probably best look into fantasy stuff like The Chronicles of the Black Moon or Requiem Vampire Knight.
