Sup /com/rades.
A freind and I are trying to start a homebrew comic 'company.'
We both have written a few series, including 2 or 3 ongoing things. I've just started writing up a script for a comic that I'm basing on an earlier novel length story.

What do you think on a Novel length (300+ pages) graphic story? What would make it different froma graphic novel is the fact that the Descriptive narrative and dialogue wouldnt be as obscure and empty as with comics, but not at all retracting from the amount of artwork.

Also, any tips on scripting? I have a hard time scripting.

Pic unrelated but welcome.

I can't really picture this, got any work you can scan in?

I'm afraid not at the moment, only rough sketches, I'm still busy scripting. But if you would like to see, I'd gladly upload a few of the rough sketches when I have access to a scanner.

I'm doing something similar of my own, if either of us gets going perhaps we could work on something.

You'd really need to post examples, because it's hard to imagine. Although in a comic the description is done through the images, anything else would be quite redundant; too much text is a great way to ruin a comic.

>>2817 Thats a fair point, Man. The artwork in this book wouldn't be so similar to most comics.
For example, a paragraph of text with an image describing a certain part of the text.

Imagine a Film Noir style narration with artwork similar to Arkham Asylum graphic novel.

So it'll be like a picture book?

Anyway, good luck with it; stop off at some small-press conventions if you get the chance to see what the competition is up to, and don't expect to make any money with it.

Forgive me if this is a blasphemous thing to say, but wouldn't setting it up as a web-based comic be better in today's world? I can understand you wanting to make real life hard copies but surely that comes after you've already got the interest?

In general the quality of small press comics is far better than what's on offer on the web, and people don't like supporting webcomics as much.

A combination of both is ideal, start it up as a webcomic and if the hits are there after publishing the first chapter to whet peoples appetites put out the whole thing. Then slowly drip feed the rest of the book online whilst desinging shirts an other such merch. Also look into releasing it as an e-book for ipad/kindle etc. This means you don't have to have unsold copies cluttering up space.

Hah, don't take this as a negative comment, but that's how many comics used to be written, if you dig around enough into comic-script writers old stuff, you'll often turn up things quite similar to as you describe. It's more of an illustrated story though really.

Anyway, if you're comfortable posting things on here when they're done, I'll get in touch.
