I used to be able to absolutely stomp on public fps games about a year or so ago. I stopped playing for a while and I've suddenly found myself with a bit of free time. I don't know what's wrong with me, I just can't aim for shit. It's not even funny, I'm too bad to be in the "haha he's funnybad" category, I end up with a KD of about 0.3 on every game I play and half of the new updates for older games have gone right over my head. I wouldn't even be making this thread but it's been a week now and I'm still just as bad as when I restarted.

I suppose I'm stuck with EUIV and Kim Kardashian: Hollywood for the rest of my manchild life now. With that in mind, can I get any recommendations for fun multiplayer games that don't involve twitch aiming or other skills that can be unlearned?

I used to enjoy UT:GoTY, but now I'm getting my behind handed to me by the easiest bots. It really is that bad.

I don't usually make excuses for my terrible performance ladies but I used to use a logitech G500, now I'm using a Trust GM-4200 with a broken enhanced DPI button that goes on and off when it feels like, so that might have something to do with it. I'll get a decent mouse before I give it all up completely, but in the mean time Real Racing 3 on the phone is brilliant.

I need to get a new mouse to replace my MX518 as it's become worn. It lasted a good long while and has served me well but it won't last much longer.

Trouble is I'm too used to side buttons and I think the equivalent of a MX518 is a G500 seems a little too pricey. I was sure MX518 weren't 60 quid, it was more or less 20-30

Disregard this, it's the G400 which is the replacement. Priced a lot more reasonably than a G500

The 500 I had was a gift, it was slightly better than the 400 but not enough to warrant the price gap.

Hmm had a look and even g400 mice seem a little out of my price range. The cheapest I can find is 35 quid and it's used. The max I would pay is 30 new and 20 used. Perhaps I should look at other brands that offer mice with side buttons. I had a razer mouse once but it was shite.

I've not used one myself, but Redragon mice are cheap, well-specified and get good reviews on Amazon.

I'm 25. I've been playing Hat Fortress 2 continuously since it came out but stopped playing at the beginning of this year, and my skill level has always been more or less the same - perhaps not the fastest mofo with a scattergun, but always able to hold my own and usually ending up at the top of the scoreboard one way or another.

Now, I imagine when I start playing again, I'll be very rusty and get the shit kicked out of me, maybe for several weeks. But I'll soon get back in my groove and be playing as I was.

I don't know why you think you have to give up now. Maybe it's different for different people, but I'd wager your muscle memory is still there and you will stomp once more if you give yourself more time.

UT's bots aren't bad actually. They can whop your arse even on low-skill setting. I think it may depend on the map you are playing. Or maybe I am a lousy player too.

Play some Quake Live, it's like an FPS boot camp. If you can still find a game, then Urban Terror is also a good choice to somewhat replicate modern military shooters while still stretching yourself by using quaky mechanics. Both are very frustrating if you're up against competent opponents, but in what I find to be a very nice way: the skill difference is clear, it doesn't feel like luck. It will help your twitch skill a lot, but both games also require sufficient tactics to make for transferable skills.

I'm way north of optimal FPS skill myself and in pure twitch, I'll lose and that sucks. You need to stop relying on being able to Just Do It, and instead practice if you want to continue to enjoy these games.

I agree. My little brother started playing team fortress 2 from my steam account, he's logged about 25 hours, I've never played it. I told him he should set up his own account instead if using mine, then it turned out he spent a fiver my mum gave him on some weird steam thing I know nothing about (I don't use steam for much) and when questioned he got it so he could 'transfer his items to his account'.

He doesn't play it for fun, really. I had a right go at him for spending money on something so pointless, he's only eleven, that was probably a quarter of all the money he's going to spend all year.

'tis a shame it has come to be like this. So long as he stays away from those goddamn hats.

If you really want to develop skills then sink hours into cod4promod or a variation of counter strike. Just play long enough to understand the mechanics.

After that, you'll find most fps effortless since they're all really not that much different. It's just a matter of using your brain to see where you could gain an advantage whilst honing movement, your muscle memory and map knowledge.

>he got it so he could 'transfer his items to his account'
That doesn't sound right. To trade items you need a premium account, and to upgrade to premium you only need to have spent any amount of money on the game. The cheapest item in the store is about thirty pence, so twice over that's the price of a Mars bar to let him transfer his items. However there is a specific 'Upgrade to Premium gift' that can be bought for £3 and sent to free accounts, so it's possible he mistakenly thought buying that was the only way to get premium. It's also possible he blew the fiver on some silly imaginary headwear that he liked the look of and used getting the trading function as his excuse.

Either way you sound like my similarly authoritarian sibling so I'll still tell you to fuck off on your little brother's behalf.

To flavour it a little, play these maps with War3Mod installed. It can get ugly though if the map is too small, there is a buyzone available and there are plenty of people playing for Orcs (Orcs' leveling includes getting much more powerful HE grenades that are literally small WMD at max level).

This little brother is the sort of person I make steam bucks off from.

While I dislike the whole market and how people will spend money on useless tat it does give me discounts on games. I mean I've even bought a couple of games based on the funds I got from cards and hats which essentially make those games free.

Not really, as it was hours he would spend doing that anyway. It's like if someone gave you money for breathing. You couldn't say "Ah, but you wasted that time breathing. You'll never be able to get it back!"

So he's right really, they are essentially free.

>You couldn't say "Ah, but you wasted that time breathing. You'll never be able to get it back!"

I could if he just sat in a room staring bovinely at a wall whilst doing his breathing for cash.

But it's not really similar to what you say. It's more like if for every breath you take in a certain pattern whilst advertising a certain service with a sign, you ratchet up a tiny amount of currency which you can trade for games. You then spend 90 hours breathing in that pattern & waving your sign and eventually buy The Witcher: Enhanced Edition for £3 on sale.

I would say that, given those circumstances, that copy of the game was not free.

Just so we're clear, are you still talking about Steam trading cards? Because I got a bunch of those whilst playing games, without a thought put into it, and subsequently sold them for a few quid. It took minutes of my time and acquiring them was basically accidental. I can't relate that to your metaphor at all.

I don't understand the appeal, either. I'm prone to nerdish tendencies but I draw the line at functionless virtual cards.

(Not the poster you were responding to, incidentally.)

That depends on your perspective. The big thing is that it allows people to make a living by taking money from stupid people. The question remains whether we're better off with the stupid people keeping it or simply letting the stupid people part with it.

But it's not necessarily stupid people.

There's a teenlad at my workplace who is a studenty, artsy pretentious type, so I like to frequently engage him in more philosophical types of conversation. He's of the mindset that our current consumer capitalism model is best because it allows an individual to achieve their "dreams" and such if they work hard enough- In my opinion, this is what makes the poor chap one of the biggest suckers around. He has no objections to things like the constant cycle of wasteful consumerist upgrades and obsolescence, because people (like him) choose to partake in it.

Myself being of the more anarcho-communist hate everything rebel tr00 punx kind of mindset, I just think people are idiots who will throw money away. But it's not simple stupidity. It's that people have been conditioned to the kind of economy we live in, and they have adjusted their work/reward mentality to fit in with it. Brainwashed, if you will; or in my opinion, more like... Assimilated.
