I've recently bought a desktop computer, after using laptops for just over a decade, which means it's time to properly introduce my kids to computer gaming.

However, I'm incredibly out of the loop with this sort of thing. Which games would you recommend for children aged 6 and 9? I assume the likes of Command & Conquer, Sim City, Civilization, Rollercoaster Tycoon, etc. are still going strong. I'm about to install Steam so I'll have a browse on that - most of my friends still into gaming are raving about Rocket League at the minute.

I still don't understand what the fuck they were trying to do with that movable base, limited unit count shit in the later C&C games.

I always smirk at this as the majority of games this refers to run perfectly fine on Windows XP, of which I only recently upgraded from.

But then again, I was still running Windows XP, so the joke's on me.

>Sim City

Please don't bring these up, the memories are painful and tragic. Electronic Arts fucking killed them.

There's a slew of new Rollercoaster Tycoon style games for release soon. Just google them. Alternatively Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 is still brilliant.

If you want to be Dad-like you could try getting them into old games generally. I played Doom when I was wee and using the splatter gun to gib the demons is something I look back on fondly. Don't get much like that in modern games.

Lad, at that age they should be playing with pic related outdoors. There's plenty of time for them to become depressive loners later in life (I say this as a gamer myself).

That freaked me the fuck out, I didn't understand why for years and years. I downloaded it just a few weeks ago and finished it all, spent hours teaching my creature all the cool miracles and stuff. It's a mix of sandbox with a bit of light purpose, enjoyable side missions and engages your curiosity to great extents. Wonderful stuff, such a shame they never took it to the next level. The guy who worked on their AI is now lead producer with Deepmind, the team that built AlphaGo by the way.

Spore might be worth a chuck. Obviously it was the biggest disappointment of the 21st century when it came out, but nowadays you'll be able to get it and its expansions for cheap, and it's perfect for kids that age. Fun creature creation which I know my brother spent hours on when he was 6-7, and the actual gameplay is babby's first hack'n'slash/RTS/Civ/4X depending on the game phase.

GOG has a lot of classics, as well as new games, for pretty cheap. So a lot of good point and click adventures if you reckon they'd be up for those? The Sam & Max games are all good, including the Telltale ones from a few years back. Simon The Sorcerer has a lot of very British humour. Toonstruck is good but quite dark, sort of Ren & Stimpy-ish if they're of an age to appreciate that?

When my brothers were that age, they played a lot of Garry's Mod and various train simulators, so that's worth considering. Though they are severely autistic so take that with a pinch of salt.

You just give it food and rub it's tummy. The Ai was good because it was imperfect, it seems reluctant to take direct orders, the Ai in black and white 2 was robotic by comparison. You can teach him all sorts of complex stuff if you do it right.

OP again. They've spent most of the past 8/9 months obsessively playing Spore, Rollercoaster Tycoon and online zombie killing/tower defence games. As it's Christmas I thought I'd get some more for them. Anything decent in a similar vein? Something like Tropico or a clone of Theme Hospital?

For zombie killing I'd say get Killing Floor. Not Killing Floor 2 though. Tower Defense Dungeon Defenders (again, the first version, NOT Dungeon Defenders 2) DD is quite fun, you set out the tower defense and then when they mobs come you get to run out and kill them too. Same mechanic is used in Sanctum 2, which is good. never played Sanctum 1 so can't say whether it's good or bad.

All games I recommended are available for Linux as well as Windows.

Your OP image reminds me, I got an xbox with rollercoast tycoon a couple of months ago and by god that game is addictive.

Theme Hospital is still stellar, I installed it on my laptop just a couple of weeks ago. The graphics haven't aged as much as most things from that time. Tropico 4 is by far the best, I would normally say the learning curve is high for 6-9 year olds but as you say they play rollercoaster tycoon and I probably underestimate their intelligence.

I want to recommend Black and White again. Great sandbox.

Might they be interested in a racing game? My little brother was obsessed with Burnout: Paradise (and myself obsessed with Burnout 3 Back In Day).

Why did you decide against it? I played the shit out of Medieval: Total War and Rome. I would suggest Rome or Medieval 2 as they're more relatable than the recent ones.

Anyway, I'm toying with getting Stardew Valley and Planet Coaster (which has been made by people behind the original Rollercoaster Tycoon games)

This thread seems relevant enough to post this question without making a new thread: what essential PC exclusives have come out since 2013? I used to be a PC gamer, but my gaming laptop packed in a few years ago, and I hadn't had the money to build a decent PC until very recently. So far considering getting Total War Warhammer, which would be my first Total War game, also intrigued by the Paradox grand strategy games. Also thinking of resubbing to WoW to try the content of the last three expansions I missed out on.

Warhammer is objectively a good game, but there's too much going on for me. I know how to time a charge and spring and ambush, but wizards and dragon lords? Beats me, guv'.

It did make my mate enormously happy that there was finally a TW game he can beat me at though, given I've bushwhacked him on almost every release since Rome.

I think part of my shitness at Warhammer was that I'm used to the older games, so it might be less of a culture shock for yourself. My own, very personal and non-committal opinion would be Shogun 2 or Medieval 2. However, they're probably all worth playing. Shogun 2 was when they began changing the series up and has some very worthwhile add-on campaigns, so I'd probably advise you start there. If you really love stupid nerd shit though, Medieval 2 has an absolutely brilliant LotR mod called "Third Age", which is a major add-on/semi-sequal all of its own. And even though it's getting on a bit, Medieval 2 still looks ace.

Hijacking this thread. What Xbox games would you recommend for:-

1. A five year old. Her favourites tend to be Sonic, Lego games and Rayman but on game pass she also likes Goat Simulator, Moving Out, Pikuniku and Untitled Goose Game.

2. A thirteen year old. The major issue here is that his mum is quite funny about age ratings so she doesn't want him playing anything that is PEGI 16 or 18.

That is very challenging. My two young teenagers play plenty of games that are PEGI 16 or 18, but I do vet them and know a lot about games. The only game I wouldn't let them play right now is GTA.

It does make things a lot harder, especially as almost everything involving fighting or violence seems to be automatically rated a 16 these days. He does get to play games rated 16, like Tekken, but as I don't game that much these days I can't vet them as well as I'd like.

For the five year old, if they're into platformers there's the Ori games which are quite lovely, and then Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair which is very similar to the new Rayman games. Maybe even the first Yooka Laylee but that's a bit rough.

What about No Man's Sky for the 13 year old? I've heard that in the years since its initial release it's become a very good game.

Which sparks an interesting debate about what constitutes a playable game. If a game is presented to you in a purchasable package, but there is a whole website full of supplementary material not included in that package required to make the game enjoyable, is that fair? Do we just assume everyone has Internet access all the time from now on?

It's this kind of attitude that is spelling the death of the instruction manual. 'Oh just Google it'.

Minecraft has probably changed a lot since you last logged on. The game is still the same, but there's a tutorial of sorts now which show you how to punch a tree, build a workbench, and so on, and this is tied into the "advancements" which is like an achievement tree that if you followed completely, I think would bring you all the way to the End - I'm not sure how much these prompts will hold your hand or guide you, but they're there:

https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Advancements

There's also a recipe book so you don't have to look up how to build everyfuckingthing like you used to.

I also just think it's a game thats always expected you to look stuff up. When I was into it ten or so years ago, you definitely had to tab out to a wiki or guide to play survival properly. Now, I feel like there are adequate in game resources to complete it unaided.
