So, are we going to talk about this? On the one hand, it's just another "youtube personality". On the other...

Genuinely think the likes of him and Yahtzee have a lot to answer for as the grandfathers of the alt-right.

Is this just a joke or is there anything to it? I barely know who this bloke is and Yahtzee is a game of chance so how could that foster far-right sympathies?

I don't know what >>22348's point is, but Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw is a video game critic.

He did coin the "PC Master Race" term, but to say that's what spawned the aut-right is... tenuous to say the least.

He seems to be loathed by both the extreme right and the extreme left. The extreme right think he's a soyboy cuck snowflake for objecting to the transphobia in the "are traps gay?" question he was asked at some panel he was hosting. The extreme left think he's an alt-right misogynist bigot because he didn't completely condemn Gamergate and he bad mouthed Bioware a lot.

Bioware staff also hate him. https://archive.li/UuEJw

It's quite shocking how many actual devs with real jobs hated him enough to immediately celebrate his death on twitter. He must have really stuck it to them.

I don't know enough about his work to judge much, but that at least is a testament to his prominence in the industry. I don't like critics that are bastards for the sake of being bastards (I am currently planning the brutal murder of Jay Rayner) but at the same time what sort of mentalist actually thinks it's OK to take the piss of a dead bloke within hours of his passing on Twitter. What a world we live in.

I'm only half serious, but yeah along with atheist youtubers of the mid to late 00s, I think they did a bit to set the stage for people like Sargon of Akkad and Paul Joseph Watson, right down to the sneering Brit archetype.

I sort of see where your coming from, but that's sort of like crediting Wilhelm I with creating the Nazi party.

Him and Yahtzee were both (iirc) SomethingAwful users. Way back in the day SA was the Pepsi to 4chan's Coca Cola. So they both grew out of what I think of as anarcho-internet political leanings; the school of thought we had before "normal" politics got on the internet was one that placed a very strong emphasis on free speech, and saying just what you wanted and fuck whoever is offended was a strongly respected value.

I can see how that might correlate with the alt-right and what have you, but I really think they are separate entities that evolved from that. There was nothing inherently right wing about it back then.

I like how he's being branded the worst person who ever lived by someone who literally couldn't even wait for his fucking corpse to get cold. I can only assume Bioware's medical plan doesn't cover treatment for irony blinkers.

I was no great fan of Thatcher, but when she died I did at least wait for rigor mortis to get in before shitting on her again.

I remember those, though all of them somehow managed to either have a fallback career or cash in... except for Mr Coughlan, who is now trying to scrounge some pitty money from American leftists with his unscripted and badly produced polemic podcast.

To begin with, yeah, but he grew into it and was at the very least a touch more colourful than the snooker-level dross that plagued SC2 tournies in the earlier days. I dare say he's one of the reasons "eSports" (wince wince) has broken into the mainstream, paving the way for the explosion of things like DotA 2, PUBG, and Fortnite, as well as GAME's confidence in opening up eSports cafés in a good number of their high street stores.

He didn't do himself any favours getting involved in morally grey Internet drama and I don't like him much purely on the grounds of having one of the most punchable faces in gaming (quite the feat in itself given the likes of Todd Howard and Bobby Kotick) but he did a lot of good and what he didn't do well he at least didn't too awfully or with ill intent.

Rest in peace, TB, and may a more handsome man than yourself knot the fantastic beast you called your wife.

His SC2 commentary is the main reason to criticise him.

Yes he had elevated levels of energy. But it was invariably vapid. That obviously does appeal to the people who want to be swept along in a tide of enthusiasm without having much appreciation of what is going on in the game, but when the commentator literally doesn't know who is winning half the time it sullies the whole experience for me. And his affected voice is annoying anyway.

Your characterisation of others just isn't right. We had Husky from the very beginning, and while I very quickly outgrew him and their similar style, he was leagues above TB. Literally. The most prestigious tournaments in the early days almost universally had the likes of Tasteless, Artosis and Day9. If you regard these former progamers and exceptionally funny people as "snooker-level dross" I really don't know what to say to you. These are the people who carried SC2 to the height of its popularity.

I'll begrudgingly give him some credit: he poured money back into his own team when Korea started to hit rocky waters and probably lost money doing it. He clearly genuinely cared for the game.

Hes always been sitting on a nice fat inheritance (high 6 figures usd). Its why he could afford to just about coast through long enough to become sort of successful. Its actually the root of Fakesagan's resentment for him as admitted in a 2011 livestream back when they were actually friends.

I hate myself for knowing this off the top of my head.

What's Day9 up to these days? I dropped out of the SC2 scene around mid-2013 but used to love his videos. He was actually so entertaining my lass liked watching them with me despite knowing nothing about the game.

Come to think of it she left me for a Twitch streamer...

He streams on Twitch (Hearthstone, DotA2 together with Purge as a mentor, currently Dark Souls) with what's probably not an insubstantial subscriber base. I've not seen him cover much StarCraft recently, but I'm way out of the loop on that anyway.

>>22373
In terms of game casting he really was a bit lacking despite his obvious enthusiasm. It was meant to be "colour commentary" but for the longest time it was more of a "say what you see" while Day9 or the Casting Archon managed to add colour while still being informational. Communication at the time and certainly more recent information has made it very clear though that Axiom was a passion project not a money maker.
