24832 Games set in the UK
I've been playing Forza Horizon 4, set in the Lake District and Scotland; and Assassin's Creed Valhalla, set in medieval England. I think it's the only time I've played a game where I can go to Leicester (albeit 9th century Leicester), and I liked the novelty of it. Any other games set in the UK? Obviously there's been a fair few in London (Watchdogs Legion, The Getaway, GTA London, Assassin's Creed Syndicate), but any that rep the rest of the British isles?

Funny you should post this, I'm downloading Forza 4 as we speak because I was interested in the "driving around the UK" aspect, is it the whole of the UK or just bits of it?

This is going to be a bit of a stretch, but Euro Truck Simulator 2 with ProMods has some interesting scenery. You must use ProMods though - the stock UK map is utter fucking shite. I mean, what the actual fuck is this? The M4/M5 interchange is iconic and they turned it into ... that.

Most of it is generic British countryside, but there's Derwent Dam, Bamburgh Castle and a bit of Scotland at the top.

Basingstoke is a game I've been meaning to check out for years, but never have. So no idea if it's particularly realistic, especially as it has randomly generated levels from what I hear.

> Sounds not unlike the real Basingstoke.

Randomly generated levels and a big white blob bouncing after you as you search ever more desperately for the train station and a way back to civilization.

It's been a while since we ruled over Normandy.

Yes, the day-glo yellow anorak, that's the one.

Not saying you should play it OP, but this thread reminded me of being very young, and having my dad and his mate tell me to drive about in Project Gotham Racing on the London street circuit while they verified landmarks and street names in an A to Z. I probably complained I'd rather be playing Halo at the time, but I realise now how mindblowing that must be if you've come from a time when there weren't any computer games, let alone ones that map detailed, 3D versions of the capital you can drive a Ferrari around.

Biggest disappointment on the map is the British Isles. Landing French invasion forces in Scotland and Ireland to free them from the yoke of English overlordship, only to discover the map is bugged, so once you start a battle all the terrain is perfectly flat. I was gutted.

The Getaway for PS2 is a GTA clone set in London. Apparently it's actually fairly good.

I say leave the post up, it really deserves a special mention for being an open-world environment, done to scale in Central London. It was a ludicrously ambitious thing to do on old PS2 hardware and I think it went a bit unappreciated at the time.

It also earned points with me for the total lack of UI, it was quite ahead of its time in the "cinematic" type approach.

I know it's tangential to the OP, but this is highly impressive given what >>24848 said about The Getaway's "ambition". Text from the description:
>The software used is Reality Capture. I recorded video with a gopro mounted on a bike. 4 directions are recorded, forward, backward, left and right. Every 10th frame, or so, is extracted from the videos, not every frame is used. There were about 4.000 images, but with later experiments I realised it could be done with much less. This reconstruction took about 5 days with the manual addition of many control points, and not counting numerous previous failed attempts. It was reconstructed in parts and then they were combined together into one whole track.

I've been hoping to see some sort of RTS built using the google maps 3D view. That looks great, if nightmarish.

I would assume that you could take that physical data, replace the bad looking bits of it with new assets and touch up the rest, replace textures, etc. Basically using it like a cast to build something better in. I don't know half-a-jot about 3D modeling and game development though, so I may well be wrong. Assetto Corsa specifically has VR support to, so the Blackpool Grand Prix might be closer to hand than anyone could realise. Can't be any worse than the Jeddah circuit.

Maybe. The bad looking parts are all polygons you'd have to manually remove. With that low data-quality it would probably be easier to just build the model yourself and use the image to texture it instead.
Or just get better data to work from.

I'd pay probably too much to have someone model and map my local "nice driving road".

I'm a little surprised nobody has done Snake Pass or Hartside/A686, that sort of thing. Forza sort of mashed a lot of good UK roads together in a rather pleasing way, but I'd love the full Assetto experience on them.

It should be included in a DLC with a selection of 15 other tracks. And the title screen for the submenu should be this:

I was enjoying the first few seconds of this until APPLES AN' PEARS opened his fucking mouth. You can pinpoint the exact moment you can tell the design wasn't lead by British people. I know the games in the series do play up regional stereotypes somewhat, but come on.

Christ, that is literally the voice I do to take the piss out how every English bloke talks in video games. It's like we're all from a small village called Jason-upon-Statham to these people. I'll give them this, I'm as interested in their mod as I was in Fallout 4. Can't be any worse than the last DLC sized Fallout mod I heard about, well, I hope not anyway.

I was almost entertained by the concept of the underground as a central point to gameplay. Remove fast travel and have the creaking transportation infrastructure be what the local gangs fight over. Shame.
