5517 I want to learn how to swim
I am 27 years old and I still don't know how to swim. I would like to pick up the skill. I also think it would be good for me because I am morbidly obese and swimming is a low-impact exercise.

I'm concerned about using public swimming pools because of stuff I've seen on TV where somebody swimming tastes urine in their mouth or sees poop floating on the water. I'd really like to avoid such experiences even though my experience with swimming (with floats) as a child was fine.

What's your opinion on swimming in public pools? Is it acceptable or should I just stick to the treadmill?

It really depends where you go. I used to swim in a posh gym/hotel swimming pool, and it was far cleaner, quieter and overall better than my local leisure centre. I would recommend looking for such a gym because honestly my only experience in LCs are of fat chav families and their screaming children.

Public pools are fine, if they're open at all do whatever.

I wouldn't recommend public baths. That lad from Bronski Beat might try and get you.

Like otherlad said, gym pools are decent and if you're not confident they don't have deep-ends or people messing about. Go during the afternoon on a weekday if you can as from my experience it'll just be you, the staff might be willing to teach you as well.

If it's a shallow gym pool you find people that just walk back and forth instead of swimming. That could help build your confidence just being in the pool and around water.

Most public pools are basically fine, especially if you go when they're quiet. Many leisure centres are open well before 9am, which is a good time to avoid the screaming kids.

I'd strongly recommend taking lessons to build your confidence in the water and get you started with the right technique. Most leisure centres run adult swimming courses for beginners - ring your local council for details.

It's Rolf Harris that you really need to watch out for.

You imply you've been to a swimming pool as a kid so I'm not sure why you are unfamiliar with the level of hygiene. It's extremely unlikely indeed you're going to find poo floating in a public pool. You will, however, have to accept that people wee in it constantly, plus there will be an ungodly amount of hair and fluff everywhere that I personally find icky, and I believe it's still the law for there to be at least one plaster. But you won't suffer healthwise from any of this due to the chlorine.

I've no experience of private pools run by PureGym or whatever so they could very possibly be cleaner.

Jesus didn't walk on water, he just learned to swim on his travels through Europe. When he came back he used his learned skills to swim to his disciples. Swimming out to them in boats, they didn't understand so likened it to walking on water.

Bollocks, all Jews are obligated to teach their children how to swim with the same importance that they must be taught the Torah or be circumcised. The disciples therefore almost certainly knew how to swim and Peter is confirmed from that time he ditched his mates on that lads fishing trip they took.

Many years ago I had friends who tried to set me up with a Jew because I'm technically one - it was one of the most bizarre experiences of my life talking about this stuff as she tried to J-date me. The plot to chop off my hat was foiled though as the lizardmen didn't factor in that I awkwardly lose the ability to talk to women interested in me.

Mate, most of the disciples were fishermen. Do you think that the idea of propelling yourself through water was a totally alien concept to them? They were illiterate halfwits from a backwards shithole, but I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't have mistaken doggy-paddle for a miracle.

Fuck me Einstein

Man learns to swim on his travels and returns to a land locked area eg Sea of Galilea and swims. Locals mesmerised man walking on water fucks sake.

We don't know who wrote the gospels, but we're damned sure it wasn't any of the apostles. The gospel of Luke literally admits to being a second-hand account in the first paragraph.

>Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.

There are multiple references to swimming in the Old and New Testaments, but yeah, sure, whatever, your theory is perfectly reasonable.

Jesus had miniature boats on his feet for buoyancy. He was a master carpenter, after all.

I think what this proves is that some pricks want to appear so intellectual from pouring scorn on religious scripture that they will make up explanations for miracles that are almost less believable than the miracles themselves.

Indeed, I'm as irrelgious as they come, but thinking ancient Levantines had never seen a man swim before is straining credulity far more than even Genesis does. Also the fact the bloke who brought this up mentioned Christ traveling Europe makes me think it's some weird far-right thing, but I'm wired about that sort of thing.

Unless OP is unable to control his magical water walking abilities I don't think it needs discussing here anyway.
