Is it possible to find a large, cheap, relatively underpowered tablet to function mainly to display a single screen of information?

How wasteful would it be to have a tablet on a shelf just to have an automatically updating weather forecast, or another next to an art desk to display reference images or a mood board?

The main concerns here would be the size and clarity of the display rather than computing power.

I'm sure Amazon do something like that.

What about this?

The Show 8 is significantly cheaper, if you were wanting to go that route.

How colourful do you want? e-paper displays are handy for this sort of thing.

(and thousands of others. Reclaimed kindle displays are cheap, as are repurposed shelf-edge advertising labels).

You can find old Android tablets on eBay with weak processors and shagged out batteries for next to nothing.

If you want a really big screen, you could get a cheap second-hand monitor or TV and hook up a Raspberry Pi or an Android TV box. If you're reasonably handy with electronics, you can get LVDS controller boards off eBay or Aliexpress for less than a tenner which would allow you to use the LCD from a broken laptop as a monitor.
