My friend wants to back up his WordPress blog somewhere other than wordpress servers. He got some software called duplicator pro which doesn't seem to be compatible from the wordpress side. Wordpress themselves advise us to get a business account with them to use something called jetpack but it's not clear what that would achieve other than giving them money. I've uploaded the XML files that wordpress let's you download to an FTP server he has on 123reg, but I don't know how to turn that into a browsable page. Ideally it would be something he could update too, but is it possible to at least make it publicly readable somehow? What would you suggest?

Wordpress do a great job and getting a pro account is what I would recommend.

Yes, you can do it all cheaper yourself with a cheap VPS but you're then on the hook to maintain the thing, and given the number of vulnerabilities that exist within its ecosystem, and the frequency of updates and maintenance you are going to have to do, I would steer clear unless you are an experienced sysadmin.

Is there an easy way to just set up a mirror or something? He's a professor of politics that includes some topical political stuff which he writes about so he's concerned wordpress themselves may do an about-face and scrub it, as other webhosts have done unilaterally to others in the past, despite there being nothing objectionable about it.

Was there really "nothing objectionable" about it though?

I didn't mean they'd taken his down, they haven't, he has always been on wordpress. I meant when other sites have used automatic mods to censor their content. It's something that happens and he's trying to be proactive about it.

That does not sound like a thing that actually happens to content with "nothing objectionable about it".

If it's just a blog, can't he just copy and paste each post into a text file and save it on his computer? Then, if The Men come, at least he has them all saved and can just post them again somewhere else.

We've scraped the site but that doesn't make a publicly accessible mirror. There's about a decade of weekly posts, if there's a way to automate re-uploading them in the right order he might be happy with that.

Any web hosting provider offers Wordpress hosting for a couple of quid a month, including 123reg.

Thanks. That's where we uploaded the scrape but I don't know how to make it a website and not just a handful of files in an FTP. So the next step is to phone up 123reg and ask them to talk us through it?

You need a dump of the SQL database, not a scrape. There really isn't much you're going to be doing with scraped html.

There's a tool in the 123 control panel to automatically migrate an existing Wordpress site.
