My Samsung Galaxy A3 phone runs Android 7.0, but has reached the end of its Android support. This means some critical apps are likely to stop working on it this year.
It's a perfectly good bit of hardware and I don't want to ditch it just because I'm not allowed to install the latest version of Android.
Is there a way to buy, botch, or otherwise finagle a copy of a later version of Android that would be compatible with my phone? Alternatively, has anyone tried LineageOS?
You could try flashing a newer Android version onto your A3, but you are most likely going to run into hardware support and stability issues. The A3 has an ARM Cortex-A5, which is going to be a bit underpowered and/or underequipped to run anything newer than probably Android 9. Even Android 8 could cause problems.
Alternatively, you could turn your old phone into a home media server. Especially since it has a microSDXC card slot that can easily fit cards with 1TB or more.
I think I'm going to try installing a version of Android 8.X on the phone. There are really only two or three key apps I'm hoping that the phone can use.
I'm checking here and the quality of the ROM seems entirely down to the integrity of the developer. Is there any way to tell if the build is trustworthy?
