Oh, it was the emergency test thingy. Nothing happened to my phone either. Probably because the only government department I've given my number to is the DWP, possible dole fiends are fair game for daft militant wogs and flash floods.

You still owe me a tenner.

You know it's not number dependent, yeah? Just goes out to everyone connected to a given base station. For the test, that's meant to be all base stations.

Yeah, I was being facetious when I said the government was hedging it's bets that terror attacks and natural disasters would clear out the potentially unemployed.

>>71890
However, 3 users are fair game, it would seem.

It only works on newer phones. If you're still using Android 10, the government doesn't think you deserve to know about a life-threatening disaster.

I was watching the snooker on TV and they paused it at 14:58 in anticipation of the 15:00 alerts. My phone went off at 14:58, and there were still people in the crowd on the snooker who were getting them at 15:07. All I can really think now is that it can't be ideal to receive the four-minute warning nine minutes late.

It's a long signal that was supposed to run for about 20 minutes, in case anyone missed it. Three only sent it out once at the top of the hour so loads of people didn't get it.

I believe the alert is limited to specific bands of 'G', whatever that is (5g to memory, but there're specification on the governement website).

Pretty inconsiderate of them if you ask me, some of us had been up all night on drugs and just barely sleeping it off by that point of an afternoon. Woke me out of a very comfortable doze watching Unsolved Mysteries in bed.

Only my phone went off though, which means my girlfriend must be on the "zombie bait human shield acceptable losses" list. So I'll have all the rice to myself.

>A UK-wide emergency alert test sent to mobile phones on Sunday included a Welsh language error.

>For the words "others safe", the message read "eraill yn Vogel" when it should have been "eraill yn ddiogel".

>"Vogel" is a complete nonsense word in Welsh, as there is no letter V in the Welsh alphabet, although Vogel is a ski resort in Slovenia.

>The UK government blamed a "technical error" for the mistake and said this would be rectified in future.

Vogel is also the Dutch word for bird.

Welsh nationalism will be in trouble in the event of a real emergency. I can just imagine them angrily writing an email over some pedantic grammatical error as the lava bursts in.

I wonder if they have their own .gs.

I've long argued that if everything really goes to shit and there's a global nuclear war, the last song the BBC or the emergency broadcast system will be playing should be It's The End Of The World As We Know It by REM. And if people don't like it, hey, who'll be able to complain. In all likelihood, you'll be a smoldering pile of ashes in a few minutes' time anyway. Nobody's going to be like, "I'll give those people at the Beeb a piece of my mind as soon as this nuclear war business is over".

I don't know what the current plans are, but it certainly used to be the case that if everything was fucked and we were all doomed, the BBC was expected to play Nimrod from Elgar's Enigma Variations.

Just because it's exactly four minutes?

How very British. Never mind the end of the world, give people time to listen to it till the end.

In practice, the four-minute warning probably would've been three minutes or less though. Depending on many factors.

Perhaps we could then all post a sternly-worded letter to whoever was shooting at us on their total lack of decorum and sense of fair play. They'll be begging for mercy if all three of us make a good showing of it.

It'd be interesting to see what twitter would look like in those final minutes if it happened nowadays. For once, gen-Zers would have something real to moan about.
