You know how you used to be able to click "I own this" on Amazon product pages and generate recommendations from things you bought elsewhere but then they removed that option? You can still do it if you add the item to your wish list then remove it and click "I own it".
This isn't /lit/ specific but it's one of the very few pieces of information I was glad I gleaned from the other chan. If you download someone's facebook photo using the "download" button, it sends them a notification saying you have done so. You can't even stalk people in privacy. What a violation.
You can still save the photo off. Just don't use that button.
The first part, in particular, is a really nice tip.
Does any of the stuff on these Calibre servers still have the DRM intact? I don't suppose they're servers of 17,383 legally purchased ebooks but I just wondered.
A lot of them have many of the same books as each other too. I wonder if they raid each other's servers or are all avid fans of Mobilism or download big packs of NYT bestsellers or something.
Let's start with free Zinio magazines:
1) Go to http://www.rbdigital.com/poudreriverco/service/zinio/landing 2) Click Create Account
3) Enter in a 14 digit number beginning with 23052. e.g. 23052000059859
4) Register using a Zinio account email address. I recommend you create a new Zinio account just for this. You must use the same email address for both accounts.
5) Check out magazines to your Zinio library. Go back each month for the latest issues.
Remember to enter random numbers but keep the first digits the same.
If people would post their library's name with the first digits of their library card and the length of the number, it would help to expand this list and help other purposes.
Databases are a bit more scattered. Here's some of the better ones.
http://www.londonpubliclibrary.ca/informationdatabases Offers Gales, World Book, EBSCOhost, EBSCOhost's Consumer Reports, Newsstand, and others. The funny part is when you click to go a database, it gives you a sample card number (22104123456789). You can just copy and paste the sample card number to access the database.
Here's another funny one:
http://gclibrary.com/research.php Funk & Wagnall's Encyclopedia, EBSCOhost (many)
I just looked up the address of one of their branches and used that: city: Little Rock zip: 72201 phone: 5016822053
Here's a generous one. They have great access to the Consumer Reports website, Oxford English Dictionary (!), National Geographic (!), World Book, Mango languages, EBSCOhost, Gale, Grolier, and others.
They let you register for a temporary card on their site for free. You can then use the temp for 30 days to access their databases. Sign up with postal code (T5X 3Y7) or just use my temp.
