Moshe Lewin's The Soviet Century is an excellent book by a former Red Army soldier. It has quite a strong focus on economics, and is written from a dirty bolshie perspective, if that puts you off though.

I believe there are no satisfactory textbooks on modern russian history. But if you are intrested not only in facts, but also would like to feel the atmosphere, you should try books by Vladimir Sorokin.
