Skyscanner have some very good tools for finding cheap flights. The cheapest flights to the US are the holiday charters to Orlando. West coast destinations are the most expensive, for obvious reasons.

Yeah, US Immigration are (rightly) some of the evilest bastards on the planet. One doesn't just pitch up with a one way ticket without a thorough interrogation and much paperwork proving you're going to leave, soon. Play by their rules and they're totally fair, but appear a bit shonky and you're not getting in.

As a "working class" American I don't know many people who would be allowed in, much less allowed to immigrate, had they been born somewhere else.

Norwegian have started doing some around £250, I think it was to New York. You can find them on skyscanner as previously mentioned.

Every time I go there, and when I've looked at visa/citizenship rules, the more it looks like the US just wants to build a gigantic wall around themselves.

This is the cheapest I've found, but unfortunately it means you have to go to Florida.
