Is there 'owt to do in London? Preferably something on the cheap side for a date?

I've tried looking online but it's all uninspired and out of date list articles. I'd like somewhere to take the girlfriend but I'm running out of ideas after the not-so-secret underground bar and most of the obvious options can be ruinously expensive.

Sky Garden is good for a date, plus it's free, do have to book though.
Any of the many museums and galleries if you or her are at all into that sort of cultural stuff. 100's of nice interesting pubs if you just wanna have a drink. Personally I'd probably just have a wander somewhere interesting then find a cosy pub, but it's horses for courses really innit.

Bit specialist maybe, but I went to Greenwich Observatory with a date once. I lived in Lewisham at the time, just a few minutes from there.

You have an amazing view across London from the observatory's courtyard, and there's a museum with all kinds of historic astronomical contraptions. And the vast garden/park surrounding it is always good for a romantic walk. Would definitely recommend.

In a similar vein, you can walk from King's Cross down the Regent's Canal to Primrose Hill. On a day with good weather, it's a lovely way to spend a few hours, and ends with a great view of the city.

Having someone else give you date ideas is a bit like having someone else feed you dialogue for the date. They're not you, you'll be putting on a front that'll lead to a let-down when you run out of contrived situations to involve the other in. Whatever it is you do for fun, or are interested in, use the dates as a way to get her involved or an excuse to go a bit further with it- events that relate to your interest that you might not go to if it were just you. If you don't regularly go to the park to look at the view then why would you want to date someone who likes to do that as a couple? Go to a convention, take her to the local bouldering wall, take a cookery class together by getting the ingredients and following a YouTube video together. If there's nothing come up in your conversation that's given you ideas for what you'd both enjoy then why are you pursuing this person?

The point is that sometimes you want to do something a bit different and fun. There's shared hobbies but London is a big place where activities aren't properly indexed so you can end up becoming quite samey or you'll otherwise have to spend an hour planning or asking people for recommendations.

Agreed. Where you take somebody, if you pick the location, should say something about the kind of person you are, and if not that, then you should at least be comfortable and in your element being there.

That said, I guess there are some things you can't go wrong with. Few people, including most lasses, will generally find a romantic walk in a park (or at least something similar to it) boring. On the contrary, it's a good idea to incorporate that into your first date at least at some point, because it will give you an idea if you click on a personal level when there are no other people around or things that can serve as a talking point to bridge moments of awkward silence.

It might ruin your date if you're out in the open somewhere with fuck all to talk about, but it's better to find that out on your first date than to keep trying to please somebody later on who just isn't on your wavelength.

You both sound like virgins. Getting suggestions for dates gives you a range to pick from, and if for example one hasn't dated before, it can be good to give some launching points. It doesn't mean you're suddenly compromising your identity and will be rendered incapable of expressing any individuality. They're asking for ideas which are cheap in an area with thousands of options.

Just give him some suggestions instead of wanking yourselves off over how deep your dating philosophy is.

Ride the Emirates Air Line (people who ride the London Eye given this option are proper mugs)
Ride a thames clipper (apparently rebranded to Uber Boat). I think there's a bar onboard.
Rent a GoBoat (not especially cheap)
Ride in a helicopter (cheaper but CO2 lad won't like it)
Walk over the Millennium Dome (if they've put the roof back on)
Bungee jump.

I have no hobbies, no personality, and absolutely no girlfriend, but I have recently been thinking about going ice skating. I'd go by myself, just like I recently went to a snooker club by myself, but if anyone loved me I would certainly like to go with them. I assume it's not that expensive to do.

You can also do wine tasting, which again, I've never done but is probably a laugh to do once.

Spot on. He doesn't know cheap options in a specific city. He's asking for ideas. He hasn't even stated he's going to do verbatim what anyone suggests, there's no reason to believe he's not simply looking for inspiration - and even if he isn't, responding to "I don't have any good ideas with" with "Well that's your fault" is abrasively counterproductive. If he doesn't have any dating ideas that adequately convey his personality in an environment germane to his interests, so what? It's a date.

I also had an argument with my girlfriend tonight so don't take this too personally. But still, be ashamed.

"Is there 'owt to do in London?" just isn't a very useful question, because there are an impossibly massive number of things to do in the most culturally vibrant city on earth.

I think the core problem is this: >>3675. OP isn't going to get particularly inspiring suggestions if the only thing he can tell us about his girlfriend is that she has a satisfactory fanny.

>there are an impossibly massive number of things to do in the most culturally vibrant city on earth

Be honest though: How many of them just boil down to eating a certain type of food, or looking at something for an extended period? How many of them actually involve doing much of anything at all? There might be a very impressive variety of foods to eat and things to look at, but it all comes back to eating things or looking at things at the end of the day.

This is a pointlessly academic discussion though. Most people, in reality, don't go on dates to find someone who magically compliments all of their passions in life and makes them feel alive like a newborn lamb enjoying all of the same activities and events. That's just not how it is for most people. You go for the ones who will actually agree to go on a date with you at all, and you have to make the bloody best of it, by any means.

Stop being so wide eyed lads.

>Most people, in reality, don't go on dates to find someone who magically compliments all of their passions in life and makes them feel alive like a newborn lamb enjoying all of the same activities and events.

False dichotomy m8. There's a huge middle ground between "finding incomparable bliss with my perfect life partner" and "going through the motions to get my todger wet". Can he not tell us anything about this woman? Even if I'm just trying to get my end away, I'll at least take a basic interest in someone to glean what they might be into - their hobbies and interests, their taste in music, whether they prefer a quiet drink or a wild night out, whether they're outdoorsy or a couch potato. A few crumbs of information about this woman would at least elevate us from sticking a pin in Time Out.

>You go for the ones who will actually agree to go on a date with you at all, and you have to make the bloody best of it, by any means. Stop being so wide eyed lads.

Perhaps you'd have more success with women if you were slightly less jaded and dull. I can't believe I'm explaining this to (presumably) a functioning adult, but women like it when you take an interest in them. They like it when you make an effort.

Even if this woman is unimaginably vapid in every respect, we can still at least try to make a silk purse from a sow's ear. If she likes putting twigs in vases and stencilling "Live, laugh, love" on things, then the Ideal Home Show is on at the Olympia. If she's got a third tit, then the Eat & Drink Festival is on in the same venue. This is not rocket science, it's basic human interaction above the level of just filling the hours until the inevitable embrace of death.

And maybe, just maybe, in this bid to make an effort, you might ask some other lads on the internet for ideas about things that could make you seem a bit more worldly in That London and impress her a bit.

It's a first date, lad. Chances are you know very little about the lass in question by this stage, that's the point of going on the fucking date. You spod.

OP here, that wasn't me. I've been avoiding this thread as you're clearly a sad-cunt after the chance the browbeat someone rather than to give suggestions that might be useful to me or other people who might look to /map/ for things to do in London.

My girl is foreign and likes theatre, museums, chocolate, is in medical training and might be a workaholic in any other culture but her own. I've been falling for her because we're great together; she makes me laugh, she's caring, she gets giddy when I'm affectionate, when I'm with her I'm more patient and hopefully her work ethic rubs off on me and yes, I want to put my willy in her. Even if it doesn't work out with her I'll obviously need date venues in future won't I, cunt.

Why does this need spelling out.

Even if you're just after a casual shag for the weekend, you're likely not going to get it making no effort at all. Except if the lass is drunk or she just doesn't care or she somehow sees an absolute sex god in you.

Emirates has been ruined by developments, you end up with a nice view of an industrial estate.

It's not free (£14) but there's a relatively unknown Garden Museum near Lambeth Bridge, you have to deal with 131~ steps on a medieval spiral staircase but the view from its tower is amazing and a real gem that gives a panoramic view along the Thames and on the opposite side towards Canary Wharf. Keep it a secret though because it's only a thin spiral staircase with a rope so if someone is coming down you'll have to turn around.

I'm resurrecting this thread until the revolution comes and we can murder big tech.

>The Beams
Currently pretty cool art installations in East London, using lasers and shit to create an interactive exhibits on the topic of technology. It's also been used for "raves" and the like.

>Dalí Cybernetics
This is decent if you like VR and it's around the corner from Brick Lane.

Both about £25pp which seems to be a standard going rate for fun these days.

>Last Tuesday Society
It's a small 'oddities' museum with an absinth bar. Actually quite nice to visit but you'll have to find the right sort of bird because it also has a collection of celebrity poos (including Amy Winehouse's!) Sadly it doesn't come with free samples.

>>3669
I did this a few months back and it was a bit shite. The problem Greenwich Observatory has is its hopelessly overcrowded (there's a line for the line) and you end up being hurried through the exhibits that really require you to get into the right headspace to enjoy - but even then I really struggled to give a rats arse about most of it.

Yeah it's mostly private these days, one day a week public visits kind of deal. I hear that after lockdown they introduced a booking system, closed loads of it off, ripped out seating and now ration how many of the public can be in at a time who are promptly rushed through.

In a weird way public spaces took a massive hit from covid with restrictions in place that are just too useful to ever do away with.

In a similar vein, Yorkshire Sculpture Park used to offer free admission and you'd pay for parking instead. Due to having to manage the numbers during covid they changed it from £12 per car to £6 per person, but instead of reverting back they've increased the price to £9/£10. Go back about five years and the cost per car was £8 so as well as ramping that up they're now charging people who've cycled, taken public transport or walked in from the car park about a minute away that only cost about £3 a day.

Drive another 20 minutes down the M1 and you can walk around Langsett Reservoir for free, all the sculpture park has to offer is a literal hole in the ground by Damien Hirst and some vaguely vagina looking bits of bronze.

Tate Modern is decent and so is Natural History Museum. If you must visit Parliament then walk along the river and cross at Lambeth rather than pissing about with the crowds on Westminster Bridge. South Bank is overpriced shite but the 40 minute boat tour from the pier is actually pretty okay.

It's lovely just for a stroll around tbh. The Park, as somebody else said, is lovely, particularly on a clear day. Gordon Ramsay's pizza is competitively priced for the location and quite fun if you've not had it before.

I'd recommend maybe a walk, stroll around Battersea and then you can catch the Uber Boat from outside and it will take you pretty much as far as you want to go for less than a tenner each.

Disagree, respectfully, with the other poster. Avoid the gimmicky Southbank tourist burger and beer stands and get yourself to the BFI, lots of great films, good prices, and the IMAX isn't far away.

You'll also be ear Chelsea which is fascinating just purely because of how much money there is there.

Battersea Sation itself is a dead, it's full of expensive brand places and entrances you'd have to have the right badge to enter. The area itself is well connected via the purple train, though you'll be sharing it with tourists going to Heathrow if you're unlucky) to take you to Liverpool Street and beyond.
