I love my rice cooker and steamer combination but I don't use it as much as I like owing to how stubborn the burnt black/brown skin is at the bottom to clean. I've tried adding more water to the rice to reduce any burning but I still end up with this stuck-on gunk at the bottom, same with when I steam potatoes where some of the starch gets to the bottom.

Do you have any tips on this? I'm sick of scrubbing it all off. It ruins washing up for me.

Reduce the heat. Rice is normally cooked slowly at low heat. And if you cook it with the absorption method, make sure you don't miss the point when all the water is gone, because then it'll burn quickly.

I'm not him and my rice is fine when I cook it, but do you have any tips about potatoes sticking to the steamer? I have always just assumed that steamers are a bastard to wash, but if I'm doing something wrong, please tell me (and him).

You could invest in a wire mesh cooking basket that you put in your steamer so the potatoes don't directly touch the bottom.

This would solve the most immediate problem for >>15615 but you still get starch running with the steam into the bottom-thing where it will burn. This is especially true for taters as you'll cook them for longer.

Do you lot reckon oil might be a solution? Presumably it wouldn't steam away but would provide lubricant so nothing stick to the bottom. I'd try it for you but tomorrow I have half a pack of sausages to eat and I'm not sure I like the sound of steamed sausages for tea.

I assume rice cooker/steamer combos are built a bit different, but the traditional oriental style rice cookers are built in a way that they will always switch off the instant all the water is gone so they will never burn.

It's more or less the same. Maybe I just have a bad model but the instructions were clear that a skin would be present at the bottom - something I got rid off by adding another cup of water.

I'll probably have to work out the mechanism by which it knows when to switch off. I'm assuming it runs a current.

Or there's a temperature sensor, and if it detects a temperature that's above the normal range for boiling food it'll shut off.

If at the bottom of your cooker there's a metal disk on a spring then it uses magnets. There's a permanent magnet that sticks to it when it starts cooking and the disk is designed to lose attraction to the magent when it gets slightly over the boiling point of water.
