I just ordered a black t-shirt with this drawing of Grimes on it.

What's the dumbest thing you've bought?

I honestly feel sorry for Grimes. Her music is pretty good but her appearance just won't be let go by her fans, it become a running joke and I doubt she is too pleased about it.

Wait, what joke?

I 100% unironically find the photograph of her all sweaty as beautiful as her music.

I fear I might be autistic.

It really bothers me that almost everybody (myself included) instictively judges people by their appearance. It's got to the point when I hear some new music I deliberately avoid finding out what the musicians look like because I know it will skew my opinion of the music.

On topic: when I was a teenager I bought a lot of hats (Panama hats, top hats, fedoras etc).

Green 'Carrot Trousers'.

Some girl I liked said she liked them so I bought a pair. Hesitantly wore them on a night out once, (I had to get very drunk before I put them on) felt a prick, got called 'Gay L S' all night by the lads, saw the error of my ways, and happily went back to wearing the same bland shite I usually do.

I could be wrong, but I'm sure that carrot jeans were designed for people with chunky thighs who find regular jeans uncomfortable rather than as for a new trend.

The worst thing I've ever bought was a flame shirt when I was 13 or the time I let one of my female friends decide which clothes I should buy. I spent the following day returning it all because it turned out her taste was shite.

I love a sweaty girl. During that heatwave a few weeks ago, I visited a female friend who I'm not usually attracted to. She stank of day-old sweat and I had to stifle a semi. I dunno if it's pheromones or if I'm just a manky perv.

I find Grimes cute but its certainly a face with character to it as my mates reminded me when I showed them the example of women I am into.

As for the clothing items I got a Dallas Cowboys baseball cap in the states but being a cap its not something I would ever wear in public or even the garden. I wear it inside when nobody is around, Chavs really do have comfort down to an artform

I'm fairly sure the majority of Grimes' fanbase are blokes.
She's a bit like Bjork in that regard.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but just as an anecdotal observation, I've only ever known women listen to Bjork.

I listened to Oblivion. It's more of the same ethereal vocals and electro/synthpop. I've got no problem with this but I don't see why you'd think it would find itself a majority male audience.

I absolutely love Bjork but I really don't like the other three, they're not really similar besides being out-of-the-mainstream female vocalists. Bjork's stuff is much more experimental.

I've had a soft spot for Bjork ever since I first saw 'All is Full of Love' on a collection of Chris Cunningham's videos. She does have a reputation (where I live at least) of being an artist that alternative-type girls listen to. I quite like her too, though.

>Are you sure it's not the case that maybe you just have either a limited experience of women or that the women you do know are just shit.

I wish it weren't true, but it is. Ask anyone who has ever worked in an independent record shop, any record collector, any properly avant-garde band. In any field, the niches tend to be dominated by men. Very few women have the particular sort of nerdy and obsessive mindset that drives people towards niches and extremes.

There are loads of female singers, but very few female record producers. Loads of women with a Grade 8 in piano, but very few world-class female concert pianists. Lots of female journalists writing about pop, very few writing about grime or death metal. At trade events like NAMM or Musikmesse, the crowd is 98% male.

Read one of the niche music magazines like The Quietus or Wire and look at the gender balance of the artists, journalists and fans. The gender disparity is striking.

Whilst I'd agree that to an extent that,
>Very few women have the particular sort of nerdy and obsessive mindset that drives people towards niches and extremes.

I think it's unfair to say women rarely listen to anything obscure, I've known plenty of lasses into all sorts of mad shit. The fact that there aren't many female record producers etc is also something that I'd suggest is maybe more indicative of what has been until very recently a male dominated culture(I'm sure a lot of people would argue that it still is) than any inherent shallowness in women.

I'd also say that I think it's something that is gradually shifting in part due to the internet, people get exposed to all sorts of stuff online that they would never have even thought about listening to/reading/whatever.

Anyway I'm going to sage because I don't want to turn this into yet another tedious feminism/misogyny yawnfest that we seem to have had so many of lately.

Go to any non-mainstream music concert and I can almost guarantee the great majority of the attendants will be male. Last.fm is a good website for observing this phenomenon too, again the majority of those listening to more obscure music are male.

Sage for off-topic.

Feminism is finally being challenged properly. Sociologists now feel safe to call it out once again, while in the Late 80s and 90s they often lost their jobs over daring to question the shite feminists come out with (the other relevant disciplines are coming round also). These discussions are just going to grow in all spheres of discussion, get use to it.

--

I seriously doubt the behaviour of women is suddenly going to change dramatically: they will continue to follow the pattern of behaviour they always have. When something is small and niche, it will be dominated by men and it will be barely touched by females until it gets to a certain level of popularity and acceptability. Comics were barely touched by women until Disney and Warner Bros turned them into billion dollar film franchises. Women only started to muscle in on video games when they started to reach real mainstream popularity and visibility. Even Hollywood was dominated by men until the 80s (and most niche films are still watched near exclusively by men).

I can point out a few reasons for this behaviour. It really comes down to the way that women interact with other people, which is very different to how men do it and the how they create fulfilment and their drive for it (or lack of drive, when it comes to men) . You can say this is societal, which is possibly the case and you can say it is biological. Even as a Sociologist, I tend to go with the biological (blasphemy! shout out my peers).
