I am a guy. What is appropriate to wear to dinner with a friend who is also a guy? I am worried about either appearing inappropriately casual or formal.

Somewhere in Paddington, most likely. Last time we went for lunch at Garfunkel's.

You can't really go far wrong with formal trousers, brogues and a blazer. If I'm not sure how to pitch it, I'll stick a tie and a pocket square in my manbag. If you wear a cardigan under the blazer, you can dress down a couple of notches by taking off your jacket. That basic ensemble will cover pretty much anything from a picnic through to the opera.

To engage snob mode for a moment, I'm not sure that I'd want to be friends with someone who eats at Garfunkel's.

The two of you can dress like your picture. Then everyone will assume you're a couple. Very cute.

Rather than make my own thread I'll ask here as it regards ties.

The only tie I have is a striped black and dark grey tie. Apparently black ties are the worst ties to wear at job interviews. Should I go for another? Also how does a white shirt, black trousers and black shoes do for interviews?

They sound fine, but go for a dark (but not black suit). A dark red tie would be best, as it's a warm and friendly colour but not overbearingly so like a bright red would be.

Alright don't go as Agent 47 gotcha.

But apparently red ties are seen as over confident on a couple of sites, even the dark red ones. Jesus all I want is a job, not be judged on what flappy bit of fabric hanging on my neck which serves no real practical purpose.

I would prefer a grey three piece but I cannot find a single shop in my area that does that. At least not in shops I can afford to buy from. I hear grey is all the fashion these days.

That's why I suggested dark red, like this, and perhaps even bordering on purple. If you've got the personality to pull it off (confident without being cocky), it can be very convincing. I mean, a safe bet would be a grey-blue, or if it's something that requires you to be particularly technically minded a sharper blue. Purple without being glaring can also work, such as Royal Purple.

Green and yellow would make you seem like a bit of a joker, unless it's a very pale yellow or very dark green.

There's nowt wrong with a black tie. I've been successful in my last two job interviews wearing a grey shirt and black tie.

Ignore all the HR shite that is churned out in an effort to justify their non-jobs. It's all about your personality and how you'd fit in their workplace as they already know about your abilities and qualifications. A nice pair of shoes help, mind.

It's got nothing to do with having a non-job, and everything about your appearance making you look suitable for the position.
