How do I ask for a generic short on the sides, longer on top haircut? For a regular bloke's hairstyle like in this pic, do I just say "gimme 3 on the back and sides, and leave 1 inch on the top?"

A number 1-2 back and sides (depending on how short you want it) as you want definition.
Up top is variable on head shape. Ask them to take about one quarter/half off the top and thin it out.

Don't use a woman for any of this. They don't understand what they are doing.

You could try asking for 'somewhere between a trim and a short back and sides please' - most barbers will know roughly what you mean, and will also err on the side of caution on the first pass, so you can always ask them to take a bit more off.

This is very true. While the women in my life always complain about male hairdressers not listening to what they ask for "oh no, you'd look amazing with shorter hair! Go onnn" I've found the opposite is true, with women basically deciding what sort of cut they want to give a bloke without even the pretence of consulting him. You can find one that accidentally does what you want though, and you still get some tits in the back of your head.

Women hairdressers I've had in the past weren't great. However my current barber is a women and she gives me the best haircuts I've ever had by far. I did even change what I asked for and it's still good.

A good tip I picked up: If you get a haircut that you particularly like, take a few photos from all angles afterwards. It's much easier to recreate a picture of your actual haircut than to try and copy something from a magazine.

May I hijack this thread? I'd like to hear some advice on a similar topic.

How do I figure out which haircuts will suit me and which won't? Is there some sort of a guide like that picture about choosing glasses?

I'm sporting a butch cut right now. I'd like to try something new, the only requirements being low maintenance and short hair length.

The picture is an example of a haircut I fancy. I'm not sure if it will look good on me though.
