Threads like that can often have more than 50 posts over a day, meaning the only way to pick up where you left of is the ballache of loading the entire thread.

No. A reply count would introduce a sort of hierarchy to this place in that posts with a larger number of replies would get more attention. It's not going to happen anyways because staff members are too fascist to implement real change.
